{"id":1743,"count":23,"description":"Next August, Rio de Janeiro \u2013 and, indeed, Brazil as a whole \u2013 will be in the spotlight as it hosts the 31st Olympic Games of the modern era. But after the cheers, the podiums and the medals; after the lights have gone out and the seven million spectators expected to attend have returned home, what will remain of the infrastructure and the colossal investments made for the occasion?\r\n\r\nOne thing is certain: Rio has not embarked blindly on a purely lavish venture, having learnt the lessons from the setbacks experienced by other cities before it. As a result, it has spent little more than a very \u2018reasonable\u2019 12 billion euros \u2013 perhaps even less \u2013 on the event; compared to 33 billion for Beijing and 45 billion for Sochi. Especially as, in a phenomenon not seen for 20 years, Brazil, the world\u2019s seventh-largest economy, has just entered a recession; all against a backdrop of political scandal.\n\nIn the meantime, and without undergoing a complete transformation, the city has revitalised at least four of its neighbourhoods, some of which, like the old port, had become virtually lawless areas over the years. But it is some twenty kilometres from the picture-postcard Rio, in Barra da Tijuca \u2013 where most of the Olympic events will take place \u2013 that the transformation is most spectacular.\n\nBefore, there was the Riocentro convention centre and the headquarters of the oil companies, but all things considered, that was about it. Afterwards, there will be shopping centres, hotels, leisure facilities and housing converted from the Olympic Village. All linked by roads, motorways and metro and bus routes that did not exist before. Then there is the issue of security, which is no small matter in Brazil and which, for these Games, has become a major component of the organisational framework.\r\n\r\nFrom violent street attacks to terrorist attacks, everything has been taken into account: the procurement of protective equipment, logistical support from foreign forces, anti-aircraft defences, 3,500 surveillance cameras, a ban on drones over the Olympic Village, cyber-attack prevention, and strictly controlled access to sports facilities... As we can see, nothing seems to have been left to chance. And whilst this hyper-secure deployment might still have raised a smile \u2013 not to say irritation \u2013 a few months ago, we can be quite certain that today, we know why it will win everyone over.
