It is a <strong>a vast economic zone comprising ten countries in South-East Asia<\/strong>. Originally, it consisted of a core group comprising <strong>Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore<\/strong>. At the time, the association was primarily set up to counter the Communist threat in the region.<\/p>\n<p>It has since integrated the countries of Indochina (<strong>Cambodia, Laos <\/strong>and<strong> Vietnam<\/strong>) and the <strong>Myanmar<\/strong>. Unlike the EU, however, ASEAN is intended to be a loose association focusing on economic objectives. As it has already demonstrated with the creation of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/communaute-economique-de-lasean-vers-un-visa-a-la-schengen-20150327.html\/\"><strong>ASEAN common visa<\/strong><\/a> under discussion for 12 years.<\/p>\n<p>This attitude is all the more surprising given that the <strong>region has managed the pandemic relatively well<\/strong>. While contamination levels are still rising in Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and the Philippines, other countries have reached a plateau with little or no contamination.<\/p>\n<p>Against this backdrop, Indonesian President Joko Widodo has called for <strong>ASEAN to rapidly set up a regional \"travel corridor<\/strong>. This is the second time that the statesman of ASEAN's most populous country has called for the region to be reopened.<\/p>\n<p>It is true that<strong>ASEAN as an integrated bloc is virtually brain dead<\/strong>. The borders are closed in almost all countries. Only<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/singapour-allemagne-frontieres-20201026.html\/\"><strong> Singapore<\/strong> <\/a>has timidly reopened <strong>\"Green corridors\" with Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia<\/strong>. Singapore also accepts travellers from <strong>Vietnam<\/strong> with an electronic travel certificate.<\/p>\n<p>At the 37th (virtual) ASEAN summit in Hanoi, which ended at the weekend, the ten members agreed on a \"new ASEAN\". <strong>legal framework for travel corridors<\/strong> within ASEAN. The future \"Travel Corridor Arrangement\" (TCA) would primarily address <strong>essential\" business travellers<\/strong>. Joko Widodo has asked the Economic Coordination Council to speed up the process, with a view to <strong>1st quarter 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #a71f31;\">...long overdue \"travel corridors<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to Joko Widodo<strong> future corridors<\/strong> would consist of <strong>\"fast lanes<\/strong> (\"priority entry routes\") <strong>with strict health protocols<\/strong>. <strong>Compulsory tests would be carried out before departure and on arrival<\/strong>. Only covid-negative travellers could then escape the most stringent quarantine.<\/p>\n<p>The measures advocated by the Indonesian President include the following <strong>common electronic health application<\/strong> the region and the <strong>designation of international crossing points<\/strong>. This would primarily concern airports, in addition to a number of maritime and land points.<\/p>\n<p>According to a press release from the Presidency, \"such an arrangement would give people renewed optimism and revitalise economic activity. While maintaining discipline in the implementation of health protocols\".<\/p>\n<p>\"Our people cannot wait any longer: they want to see our region recover now\", concluded the Indonesian President.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pib-asie-du-sud-est-en-2020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-102093\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pib-asie-du-sud-est-en-2020.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pib-asie-du-sud-est-en-2020.jpg 831w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pib-asie-du-sud-est-en-2020-300x213-derived.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pib-asie-du-sud-est-en-2020-768x545-derived.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pib-asie-du-sud-est-en-2020-100x70-derived.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 465px) 100vw, 465px\" \/><\/a>The travel sector is particularly crucial to the region's economies. The ASEAN General Secretariat has announced that tourism has fallen by 71% this year. It is the worst affected sector behind trade (-12%) and foreign direct investment (-33%).<\/p>\n<p>According to estimates by various global economic organisations, the<strong>Asia should see its GDP contract by 2.2% in 2020<\/strong>. <strong>ASEAN <\/strong>would record <strong>a decline of 3.5%<\/strong> <strong>of its GDP<\/strong> (Asia Development Bank estimates 09\/2020).<\/p>\n<p>According to the ADB, the countries most affected are <strong>Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore<\/strong>. Only Vietnam, Myanmar and Brunei are expected to record slight GDP growth. However, the institutes are forecasting an economic recovery with an average increase in <strong>GDP<\/strong> from <strong>8%<\/strong> in 2021.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indonesian President Joko Widodo has just called for the second time for the establishment of travel corridors within ASEAN for business travellers.
