It is through these facilities that most foreign trade as well as imports such as chemicals, fuel, cereals and construction equipment. No less than 12 million tonnes of goods pass through the port every year, representing 90 % of Cameroon's trade.

In total, the port has 13 multi-purpose warehouses, with a reception capacity of 7.5 million tonnes, a storage capacity of 11 million tonnes to cover 75 % of port traffic with the sub-region. This is the crucial connection with inland transit traffic to Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and the Central African Republic. This is achieved via road and rail links: the Transcamerounais rail network is located 20 kilometres from the port. As well as a container terminal with a capacity of 5,000 TEU, the port also offers a timber terminal with a capacity of 2 million tonnes a year, a mineral terminal, managed by Alucam-Pechiney and specialising in the import/export of aluminium, and a fruit and cereals terminal, mainly for bananas.

Inauguration of the Carrefour

The port has its weaknesses: although the government has made successive investments of more than 150 million euros since 1998 to equip it with modern infrastructure, its access channels need to be rehabilitated. frequent dredging to maintain their depth. In 2018, the authorities even got down to the task of removing dozens of wrecks that were penalising the port's operations to the tune of 30 %. This operation, at a cost of more than 7 million euros, gave the signal for the port of Douala to step up its efforts to increase its traffic and dominate the competition from other ports in the region, in Benin and the United States. Nigeria.

It was against this backdrop of a desire for expansion that the stormy renewal of the concession for the port's container terminal, against a backdrop of disagreement over the distribution of revenues, dominated the headlines for months. At the beginning of the year, after fifteen years at the helm of the terminal, the French Bolloré Group was forced to relinquish management to the port authority, which requisitioned staff and equipment. The judicial process is still underway.

For Douala, the situation is made all the more uncomfortable by the fact that the Bolloré Group has become a direct competitor: in 2015, a consortium made up of the French groups CMA CGM and Bolloré and the Chinese company China Harbor Engineering Company ( CHEC) won the concession for the Kribi's new deep-water port for a 25-year period. Located near the town of Kribi, 180 kilometres south of Douala and close to Cameroon's main mining sites, the new port has a 700-metre quay and a 32-hectare platform with a draught of 16 metres.

Due to come into service in 2018, it is expected to take more than five years to extend and come close to the surface area of the Port of Douala, while benefiting from greater depth and the deployment of specialised terminals. It also aims to " to become a regional hub for the entire Atlantic seaboard of Africa, from Senegal to Gabon "according to CMA CGM. It is also a major contributor to the country's economy, with a terminal that should eventually create 20,000 direct and indirect jobs. In August, the port of Kribi welcomed the container ship Cendrillon for the inauguration of the direct Asia-Africa line, a new service designed to reduce transit times for Asian imports and exports for Central African economic operators.

However, Patrick Mellon, Managing Director of the Autonomous Port of Kribi (PAK), refuses to believe that there is too much head-on competition with Douala. our ports complement each other. We would have expected Douala's revenues to fall as a result of the arrival of Kribi, but this has not happened. On the contrary, traffic seems to be picking up in Douala, which has been able to reorganise itself, in particular by diversifying its cargo flows. "he told the press. This hypothesis of complementarity is well on the table, as demonstrated by the setting up this autumn of a working group to study a cabotage strategy between the ports of Douala, its neighbour Limbe and Kribi to facilitate the traffic of large container ships.

Article 2 of 5 in this dossier Douala prepares to become the first Central African metropolis

It is the lungs not only of Douala, but also of Cameroon and the neighbouring states: its deepwater port, established on 1,000 hectares.

[93
1011
["post-102217","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-destinations-emergentes","tag-afrique","series-douala-se-prepare-a-devenir-la-premiere-metropole-centrafricaine","vapo-free

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v25.9 (Yoast SEO v25.9) -
