He is now in charge of a new division bringing together the Sales, Distribution, Marketing and Loyalty divisions for the first time. As part of his duties, Patrick Mendes also oversees the eight regional hubs recently set up to manage the group's operations as close to the ground as possible.

The hotel industry has been through many difficult months, but with the vaccination campaigns and the evolution of the pandemic, we can expect a gradual return to business. When do you see the beginnings of a recovery?

P. M. - I'm an eternal optimist. Of course, I'm not blind, but there are a number of signals that give me cause for optimism.fuel this optimism. Where business has picked up, for example in the Middle East, China, AustraliaThe pace of the recovery is quite surprising. Particularly as it concerns not only leisure travel, but also business travel. Obviously, it will be some time before business travel returns to pre-pandemic levels. But it could pick up much more quickly than expected, particularly for SMEs and sales staff. We can see a very clear need among them to recreate links with their customers and partners.

Is this also true of the MICE segment?

P. M. - It may seem paradoxical, but I believe in a rapid resumption of major events. The number of in-house meetings and small business get-togethers involving two or three people is set to decline, and will be replaced by technological tools such as Teams, Zoom or Webex. But at the same time, as teleworking loosens the bonds between teams, there will be an even greater need to bring them together around major conventions and meetings. In the same way, major events and trade fairs will start up again. You can't have a hybrid car show, even if some people try.

We're going to be positively surprised by the second half of the year.

When do you see meetings and events starting up again?

P. M. - In many companies, as well as among the organisers, there is so much frustration at not having been able to get together for a year that I'm almost certain that things will get off to a flying start. While remaining cautious, I think that we're going to be positively surprised by the second half of the year. It remains to be seen when it will start. Will it be in June or September? Who knows, there may even be some pleasant surprises as early as May if the vaccination campaigns are well advanced. Of course, for the major forums, it will take a little longer, but for the first quarter of 2022, there are already many requests on several markets.

However, you are also banking on hybrid meetings with the announcement of the ALL Connect concept. Are these half-present, half-virtual meetings likely to continue after the pandemic?

P. M. - The whole thing will coexist. It is conceivable that in the future, a company with teams spread across Paris, Lyon, Berlin and London might get into the habit of bringing them together in Novotel for hybrid meetings rather than organising weekly face-to-face meetings. We realised with the confinement that the technology around virtual meetings worked very well. Personally, I've never been as close to the Group's teams in South America as I was during this period, even though I was physically present in the region for nine years. Hybrid events are already a reality in some of our hotels. And, to take things a step further, we are developing a partnership with Microsoft to offer an effective hybrid meetings solution that will also serve to accelerate the technological evolution of our hotels.

Read also: Accor teams up with Microsoft Teams for hybrid meetings

Along with hybrid meetings, teleworking is another major trend that has emerged in the wake of the pandemic. Does it hold promise for the Accor group?

P. M. - That's another interesting point. Teleworking is one of the fundamental movements that have accelerated with the pandemic. A better quality of life, a better work-life balance: that's what it's all about, seven out of ten employees want to continue in this direction for one, two or even three days a week. However, some people don't always have the opportunity to work at home in peace and quiet, with the right wifi and the right equipment. So there's a market up for grabs and huge opportunities opening up for Accor. Because, on the one hand, we have our own coworking brand Wojo, launched two years ago with Bouygues. On the other hand, we have m2 that are currently unoccupied in most of our hotels. Finally, another important point, particularly with regard to environmental issues, is that these establishments are often located within a ten-minute walk or cycle ride of employees' homes, thus avoiding hours of RER or car journeys to work. Ultimately, the aim is to offer coworking facilities in a large part of our network.

How will this offer materialise?

P. M. - We already have around thirty pilot establishments. In addition, nearly 300 hotels in Europe and 80 in Latin America are in the process of transforming some of their spaces into alternative workplaces. And this, either by Wojo SpotThese can be used as Wojo Corners, i.e. glassed-in areas with reception desks and workstations for hire by the hour or day. We go even further, transforming meeting rooms into Wojo Offices. where companies can set up their offices for a flexible period of timethree months, six months or even two years. This Wojo offer, which includes an application enabling travellers or employees to easily find the nearest space, already exists, but will soon be launched on a more global scale. Finally, we can also convert rooms as a "hotel office" by removing the bed and adding a Nespresso machine, all of which can be rented by the day or by the month at special rates.

Hotel 25hours in Vienna.

Let's turn now to the development of your group. Announcement after announcement, lifestyle seems to be taking on a predominant role in Accor's offering. But wasn't this development already in the pipeline a few years ago? How is this acceleration taking shape?

Patrick Mendes - Accor sent out a strong signal by moving into this niche five-six years ago. This move was initiated by the creation of Jo&Joeopen houses with a contemporary feel, and numerous equity investments, including in Mama Shelter and 25Hours or the SBE Groupowner of the signs DelanoSLS and Mondrian which we now own at 100 %. On this basis, the Group has decided to create today a fully-fledged general division dedicated to lifestyle hotels. In place since January, it comes on the heels of the launch of another general management division dedicated to ultra luxury, the brands Raffles and Orient Express that need to be treated like haute couture.

The creation of this general management team is in addition to the launch of a group dedicated to lifestyle hotels, in partnership with Ennismore, owner of the Hoxton and Gleneagles brands. What are your ambitions with this group?

P. M. - To make it the world's leading player lifestyle hotels. This group, which will have many links with Accor while retaining its autonomy in terms of design, marketing and development, encompasses some fifteen brands covering all segments. Its offer ranges from budget hotels with the trendy Jo&Joe hostels to luxury hotels with SLS and Delano, as well as Mama Shelter and 25Hours. Ennismore currently owns just under 100 establishments, but is preparing to open a hundred more, in addition to around a hundred other projects under negotiation. Very soon, this group will represent between 200 and 300 hotels.

How is this fundamental change strategic for Accor?

P. M. - We see two benefits in this. Firstly, lifestyle brands, whose offering is based on experience and personalisation, are extremely sought-after by travellers today. We can see this on social networks: they have real fans who are very attached to it. So there's a very large pool of customers and, as a result, a real interest on the part of owners and franchisees who want to move into this leisure-oriented urban hotel sector, away from the traditional standardisation of chain hotels.

Do business travellers have the same desire for lifestyle?

P. M. - Business travellers have been looking for restaurants with different styles for some time now, cool bars, more creative meeting rooms. Until recently, I myself spent between 220 and 240 days travelling each year, and I was systematically looking for something other than cold, aseptic meeting rooms. Bleisure, the mix of leisure and business, the search for experience, these have been trends for several years. But there's no doubt that this trend will continue to grow. after the pandemic.

Business-minded establishments are transforming meeting rooms into wellness areas. Here and there, restaurants that used to be classic are becoming trendier.

What are the implications for 'classic' hotels?

P. M. - City-centre hotels will have to enhancing the experience offered to their customers. We're already seeing it. Business-focused establishments are transforming meeting rooms into wellness areas. Here and there, restaurants that used to be classic are becoming trendier. For example, a host of F&B concepts developed in Novotel and Pullman hotels are taking this step towards lifestyle. And that's the other attraction of our fundamental move towards lifestyle This creates an extremely beneficial halo effect for all these brands, such as Pullman, Novotel, Mercure and Ibis, which don't want to be left behind.

So, in a way, your long-established brands are also benefiting from this development?

P. M. - Absolutely. We're not saying that traditional hotels are irrelevant. On the contrary, thanks to the impetus of all our innovative brands, our traditional brands are moving very strongly towards lifestyle, experience and personalisation, for example with the new, very fun ibis, Novotel, where you'll find a nice rooftop barThese are very contemporary rooms. You'll also see the opening of new Pullman hotels with innovative coworking spaces. All in all, we're treating business customers differently. In this context, we are also making sure that we offer F&B concepts and a design adapted to local expectations. This has become even more essential with the new reality that 80 % of our customers are domestic.

You talk about restaurant concepts. Among your recent acquisitions, the American group SBE is known for its trendy F&B offering. Should we expect them to feature more prominently in your offer?

P. M. - We tend to forget it, but while we manage more than 5,000 hotels in 110 countries, we are also one of the world's leading restaurant groups with more than 10,000 restaurants under our management. In addition to the Mondrian, SLS and Delano hotels, the SBE group has a number of disruptive F&B concepts under some fifteen brands, including Cleo, with its Mediterranean spirit, and Katsuya, with its contemporary Japanese cuisine. All these concepts could very well be set up in a Fairmont or Pullman tomorrow, and be extended to other lifestyle brands as well as to our long-established brands. In the same vein, we have also acquired a stake in Noctis, since renamed Paris Society, which manages around thirty exceptional sites in Paris, including Monsieur Bleu and Loulou. We are currently developing these innovative concepts in hotels looking for differentiated experiences. You could well imagine having a Monsieur Bleu in London or a Loulou in Dubai tomorrow.

Restaurant Loulou (c) Ludovic Maisant

In small steps, this desire to create new experiences will spread to the whole of your offering.

P. M. - All of this is very coherent. If you look at the Group's development over the last six-seven years, and the focus on lifestyle and luxury driven by our Chairman Sébastien Bazin, you will see a fundamental move towards transforming ourselves from a traditional hotelier into a group offering a broad experience. Our ALL loyalty programme - Accor Live Limitless - is the culmination of this evolution, breaking away from the traditional model by offering the possibility of accumulating points in our hotels and using them for completely different things, such as going to see a concert or a PSG match. Business travellers, who represent between 55 % and 65 % of our business depending on the region or brand, are looking for this diversity of experiences that we can offer them.

What are the practical benefits of your ALL loyalty programme for travellers?

P. M. - Our aim is to make the experience as seamless as possible, without the customer having to multiply the number of cards or applications. Through the ALL application, you can do everything from collecting points to spending them on a drink or dinner in a nice place. On top of that, we've added some special features. When you were an ALL member, you could already check-in/check-out online. Now you'll be able to receive the room key on your smartphone. Around ten hotels are already offering this service in the pilot phase. There will be more than 500 in the coming months, and eventually half of our establishments will have this digital room key solution.

As far as loyalty is concerned, at the end of last year you announced a BNP Paribas payment card associated with the ALL programme. How far along are you with its launch?

P. M. - It will be officially launched shortly and will enable members of the programme to collect points for every item they spend, even when shopping. This co-branded card with BNP Paribas is an example of the additional services we want to create around our loyalty programme. It will be positioned in around ten key markets in Europe and around the world.

As BNP Paribas is one of the leaders in corporate cards in Europe, will business travellers also benefit?

P. M. - The co-branded card can be used by business travellers (professionals / SME) and we have integrated a pro/perso expense management system into the application (expense report) for this purpose.

Lifestyle, loyalty, hybrid meetings and the resumption of major events: Patrick Mendes, Accor's Chief Commercial Officer,
