This was the <strong>Air France flight 342 from Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport to Montreal<\/strong>. Its tanks contained a sustainable aviation fuel produced by Total's French plants.<\/p>\n<p>The flight is a concrete expression of the shared ambition of the French air transport industry to decarbonise its activity and develop a French industry for the production of sustainable aviation fuels. Their gradual worldwide use should make it possible to significantly reduce CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0air transport, in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #a71f31\">20 tonnes of CO2 avoided thanks to biofuel<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Le <strong>biofuel used<\/strong> for this flight comes from <strong>waste and residues from the circular economy<\/strong>. It was produced by Total from used cooking oil, without using any virgin vegetable oil.<\/p>\n<p>This first SAF \"\u00a0<em>Made in France<\/em>\u00a0\"ISCC-EU has been certified by International Sustainability &amp; Carbon Certification, an independent body that guarantees its sustainability. <strong>Its incorporation of 16% on this flight avoided the emission of 20 tonnes of CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>By supporting the first stage of a sustainable French air fuel industry, Air France-KLM, Total, Groupe ADP and Airbus are showing the way for France to become a driving force in the energy and environmental transition. <strong>French legislation now provides for the incorporation of 1% of biofuel on all flights.<\/strong> <strong>on departure from France from 2022<\/strong>. This percentage will rise to 2 % in 2025 and 5 % in 2030. To meet this target, Total will produce sustainable aviation biofuels from 2024.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to using sustainable aviation fuel, the Airbus A350 consumes 25% less fuel than older models. The aircraft's fuel supply was provided by the first electric 100% refuelling truck, developed in France with the expertise of Total. As were the runway vehicles used by Air France.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #a71f31\">Eventually, planes flying on 100% of biofuel\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Air France-KLM is one of the pioneers in experimenting with sustainable air fuels<\/strong>. <strong>In 2009, KLM made its first flight using SAF<\/strong>. The Group has since multiplied its programmes. Between 2014 and 2016, Air France operated 78 flights using 10% of SAF. This experiment demonstrated that the use of sustainable fuel has no impact on the reliability of airline operations. Dedicated fuelling stations for the SAF have also been installed. The Airbus group aims to decarbonise all its industrial activities.<\/p>\n<p>For this first flight,\u00a0<strong>Benjamin Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Air France-KLM<\/strong> said: \"\u00a0<em>Along with fleet renewal, sustainable air fuels are the main lever for halving our CO<sub>2<\/sub> per passenger\/km by 2030. They are therefore at the heart of our approach, alongside eco-piloting and the carbon neutrality of our ground operations. France thus has the opportunity to position itself as a leader in the production and use of sustainable fuels.
