It reflects the devastating effect of the pandemic. <strong>The airports hardest hit<\/strong> last year in the UK were <strong>Cardiff<\/strong> down 86.7%, followed by <strong>Glasgow Prestwick<\/strong> (-85.8%), <strong>Exeter<\/strong> (-85.5%), <strong>Southampton<\/strong> (-83.4%) and <strong>Leeds Bradford<\/strong> (-81.2%).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\"><strong>London airports held up slightly better<\/strong>. <strong>Heathrow airport traffic down 72.7%<\/strong> year-on-year to reach 22.1 million passengers in 2020. <strong>Luton more resilient<\/strong> <strong>with a decrease of 69.5% as well as<\/strong> <strong>Stansted with 73.2%<\/strong>. The airports of <strong>Gatwick<\/strong> and <strong>London City<\/strong> on the other hand, were the hardest hit. The former lost 78.2% of its passengers, or 10.17 million passengers (instead of 46.6 million in 2019). The latter handled fewer than one million passengers, compared with 5.1 million, a fall of 82.3%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">All in all, <strong>the British capital will have handled 46.28 million passengers <\/strong>- a market share of almost 63% of all UK passengers. At <strong>2019<\/strong>, <strong>London<\/strong> had welcomed in its airports <strong>178.9 million passengers<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #a71f31;\">\"Global Britain\" remains a dream for air transport<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The major regional airports were no better off. <strong>Manchester down 76% with 7.03 million passengers<\/strong> 29.37 million in 2019. <strong>Edinburgh<\/strong> 3.47 million compared with 14.73 million a year earlier and <strong>Birmingham<\/strong> 2.86 million compared with 12.64 million in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>But where airports were still hoping for a return to favour in 2021, the<strong>he extension of the final intermediate containment stage<\/strong> announced by Boris Johnson on 14 June and the <strong>handful of countries considered safe<\/strong> for travel (green list) are a cold shower.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>a summer as bad, if not worse, than 2020<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Karen Dee, Chief Executive of the AOA,<strong> the government's \"overly cautious\" approach to reopening travel means that this summer would be \"as bad, if not worse, than 2020\".<\/strong>. According to its estimates, UK airports will lose at least \u00a32.6 billion in revenue this summer, following a similar loss between April and September 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\"\u00a0<em>As a result, British airports will continue to lag behind their international competitors in the European Union, who have not only received much greater financial support from their governments, but are also in a position to boost travel during the summer.<\/em>she told The Guardian newspaper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\"Global Britain<\/strong>the government's slogan for the UK's return to the international stage, is still struggling to materialise.
