Despite this unprecedented crisis, Hilton has continued to grow, worldwide, in Europe and in France. Last year, a difficult year if ever there was one, we still managed to achieve net growth of 5%, which enabled us to break through the the symbolic million-room mark in the world. But beyond the figures, what's really important is maintaining the quality of the establishments we open, whatever the segment, from mid-range to luxury. The new Canopy we have opened in Paris, in the Trocadero district, is a good example of this, both in terms of location and the product we offer our customers.

In France, after a period when Hilton was a little less present, your group seems to be clearly back on track with the opening of this Canopy by Hilton in Paris and soon the appearance of a new brand, the Tapestry Collection, in the French capital?

D. We're well on the way with five openings between now and the end of the year: two Tapestry Collection hotels in Paris, a Hamopton by Hilton and a Hilton Garden Inn in Tours, as well as a Hilton Garden Inn in Le Havre. Next year, there are more great things in store, with the Hilton Tour Eiffel in the 7th arrondissement and the Hilton Garden Inn in Le Havre. the much-anticipated Maison Heller in Metza Curio Collection. There will also be a Curio in Dijon, in the Cité des vins et de la gastronomie. Finally, we will also have a Hilton Garden Inn at La Villette, in the former general warehouses of Paris. The Grand Paris Express opens up new opportunities for our mid-range Hilton Garden Inn and Hampton brands. As we have seen, the Hampton by Hilton that we launched in Clichy was an immediate success. In Paris itself, there is still great potential for our top-of-the-range brands.even after our new additions. Of course, our four-star plus Canopy brand is not intended to have a dozen establishments in Paris, nor to be in 30 towns in France, but it does offer great prospects. It's a 'neighbourhood' brand. Trocadéro, Chaillot, the Palais de Tokyo: all of these locations appeal to the brand's clientele, who are looking for culture and local life. In fact, a second Canopy will open in 2023 in the Latin Quarter, which is very attractive to international customers. Can you tell us about this brand, which is new to France and just launched in Europe, in Madrid ?

D. H. - It is a top-of-the-range brand based around original independent hotels. We already had a brand of this type, the Curio Collection, but it's positioned a notch higher, between top-of-the-range and luxury, and we require these establishments to have a real catering offer. With Tapestry, we offer owners greater flexibility. A lot of independent hoteliers used to say to us: I'm right in the centre of Paris or Madrid, I'm not going to have a restaurant when there are four in my street. So we had this obstacle with Curio, whereas with Tapestry we have the possibility of welcoming hotels that only offer a bar and breakfast.

Did these collections, which emerged within hotel groups after the 2008 crisis and were designed to welcome independent hotels into their fold, make even more sense today?

D. H. - Indeed, and all the more so. It meets the expectations of independent hoteliers who need to be backed by a global distribution system. They are also conducive to conversion of existing hotels. With Covid, some owners are taking advantage of the closure to carry out works and move their hotel upmarket. This repositioning is often an opportunity to introduce a new brand, which is why conversions will account for 20 to 30 % of our growth over the next few years. In this context, we are well equipped with the Curio and Tapestry Collections to take advantage of this trend.

The Tapestry Collection by Hilton makes its European debut with the Atocha Hotel Madrid (c) 2021 Hilton

Aside from conversions, what other trends are guiding your Group's development in Europe?

D. H. - The growth potential of our mid-range Hampton and Garden Inn brands is one of them. They meet the needs of the middle classes when they travel, as well as the needs of the general public. business demand for quality products at controlled prices. These brands can offer an average price appropriate to the secondary and tertiary city markets. In the UK, Hampton and Garden Inn are present in the top 10 British cities, and will soon be in the top 30. The strategy is the same in Germany, where we can see that these brands are highly resilient, even in times of crisis. They still have room for growth in the years ahead, hence the three openings planned in France this year. This summer, we will be inaugurating a Hampton by Hilton and a Hilton Garden Inn in Tours, two hotels facing each other in the city's best location, Rue Nationale. Then, by the end of the year, we will also be opening a Hilton Garden Inn in Le Havre.

In the lifestyle segment, we have two brands with completely different positioning: Canopy by Hilton, a brand positioned between the top end and the luxury segment, and Mottoa mid-range micro-hotel brand.

Hotel groups seem to swear by lifestyle. Is this also the case for Hilton?

D. H. - This is obviously one of the other major trends that we hear a lot about today. In this segment, we have two brands with completely different positioning Canopy by Hilton, an upper upscale brand positioned between the top end of the market and the luxury segment, and MottoThis is a mid-range brand. On the one hand, you have top-of-the-range services with a restaurant, bar and rooftop when possible, but also large, very comfortable rooms. On the other hand, with Motto, we're more into micro-hotels with rooms of 14-15m2, which is a revolution for Hilton. Another special feature of Motto is the ability to combine several rooms together. Large families, for example, can take one room with a double bed and another with a double bed plus a bunk bed. But business travellers can also create a sort of suite at Motto by reserving a 14 m2 room and an adjoining bedroom, which can be used as a living room for working and entertaining by tucking the bed into the wall.

Like the new-generation youth hostels that are springing up here and there, is the festive side with lively bars also a Motto trademark?

D. H. - Not necessarily, or at least not always. The minimum requirement we set our owners is to have a reception area and a designer café in their establishment. But, as we always aim for locations in the city centre, owners may want to dedicate the ground floor to other functions, such as shops, to enhance its value, rather than to a vast lobby. Nevertheless, a Motto could very well have a rooftop restaurant-café. This will be the case in Rotterdam, for the first Motto we will open in Europe. It's a city that suits the brand, both dynamic and young. The location is superb, right next to iconic corners of the city such as the cubic houses and the Markthal, a very trendy indoor food market. We think this brand, built around ideally located establishments, will be very successful.

Speaking of trends, there's a lot of talk about lifestyle. But if there's one word that's coming up more and more often in the hotel world, it's rooftop. And why is that?

D. H. - This is primarily due to the pressure on land prices to maximise every square metre. With urbanisation, prices are rising, and this trend has started in New York and London. As a result, as soon as the roof of the hotel allows it, we offer it to our owners. This also satisfies our customers, who are very fond of it. The rooftops often offer magnificent viewsThis rooftop rooftop has just been opened and is packed every evening. Just opened, this rooftop is full every evening. In this post-covid era, there's this desire for open spaces, hence the success. But even outside covid, we know that it works very well. For example, the rooftop at the DoubleTree in Amsterdam is very popular for its view over the whole city, as is the rooftop at the DoubleTree Towers of London. These places are frequented by locals and hotel guests alike.

Talking of another current trend, coworking, many hotels are starting to convert their lobbies to mobile working. Is this something Hilton is thinking about?

D. H. - For the moment, we're not working on converting our lobbies to coworking, but rather on rethinking our seminar offering to make it more flexible. And we're doing this with a mix of large rooms, small rooms, medium-sized rooms and rooms with a coworking atmosphere. This is where we're putting our thinking caps on. Some of our hotels have already redesigned their meeting spaces in this way, and we're making progress in this area. Hilton has always been at the forefront of MICE and intends to remain so.

(c) 2021-Hilton

Teleworking, videoconferencing: how are Hilton Group hotels positioning themselves in the face of the new habits adopted by corporate clients?

D. H. - Uses are changing and we are responding to this, in particular with the possibility of holding hybrid meetings in our hotels. With travel restrictions still more or less in place, it is now possible to bring teams together remotely in our hotels. But we think that these solutions will continue to be popular in the future. At the same time, we have also launched Workspaces by HiltonThis means that you can rent a room by the day and work away from home, with the right internet connection. There is a lot of demand for this, particularly in La Défense and London. Finally, another of the key initiatives we introduced at the height of the pandemic was the Hitlon CleanStay programme, with its very high health standards. I think this will continue to be an issue, because customers are always very sensitive on this point, as the satisfaction surveys show. We are also responding to the expectations of businesses with the Hilton Event Ready programme, which enables meetings to be organised in compliance with all health standards.

Read also: Hybrid meetings and business trends: interview with David Kelly (Hilton)

How do you see business travel evolving in the future?

D. H. - It is difficult today to anticipate what business demand will be in the future. There will undoubtedly be slightly fewer trips, particularly in view of the growing awareness of the carbon footprint of travel. They may also be longer, as we have heard. But it's still too early to judge. We'll see in the months and years to come. When the dust has settled, as the English say.

Some of your competitors have made no secret of their desire to develop extended-stay accommodation solutions. While Hilton has 'extended stay' brands such as Home2Suites in the United States, is your group aiming to expand these brands in Europe?

D. H. - For the time being, no. We want to avoid a proliferation of signs by focusing on the brands we have recently launched. Hampton and Hilton Garden Inn only appeared on this side of the Atlantic in 2018/2019 and we don't want to spread ourselves too thin to push them hard to become leading brands.

As you are also responsible for Hilton's development in the Benelux countries, is your group's growth the same in this market?

D. H. - It's a small market geographically, but a very strong one, with magnificent cities like Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, The Hague and Rotterdam in great demand. We've been present in this market since the 60s, as demonstrated by John Lennon and Yoko Ono's 'Bed-in for peace' in 1969 at the Hilton Amsterdam. Since then, we've grown, we are continuing to add to our offering where we already have a presence. In April, for example, we opened a Hampton in Antwerp, in addition to the Hilton in the city centre. The same logic applies in Amsterdam, even though we have already deployed a wide range of our brands there, from Waldorf Astoria to Hampton. We are also going to complete our offer in Brussels with a DoubleTree. But we are also deploying our brands in cities where we were not previously present, such as Ghent, a major business and leisure city. At the same time, we are also starting to look at opportunities in secondary cities. This year, for example, we will be opening a hotel in Sittard, Belgium, not far from Maastricht in the Netherlands. This town has a strong industrial dynamic, with a focus on innovation.

The arrival of the Canopy and Tapestry brands in Paris, new trends, changes in
