In 2021, the market has recovered 40% to 50% from 2019 levelsDepending on spending commodities, it could reach 60 % in 2022. There are likely to be further ups and downs, with a return to pre-Covid volumes not expected before 2023 or even 2024. But a lot will have changed in the meantime, the mix will evolve. A certain number of trips will no longer exist and will be replaced by other things, around mobility for example, enabling us to reach previous levels. In this context, our aim is to be a partner to all the players that may emerge as business travel is transformed. This may include looking at intra-urban mobility players who hire out scooters, bicycles and electric cars, with the aim of ensuring that our payment methods are properly accepted.

For example, what developments do you anticipate?

A. B. - Without disappearing altogether, the number of internal meetings requiring day or two trips will decrease and could be replaced by longer stays. On the other hand, when it comes to external customer-facing meetings, we don't expect any major changes. As we often say, "if you don't go to your customers, your competitors will".. This necessity will prevail and external meetings will resume as normal once the constraints have been lifted. In this regard, we conducted the 'Back to Blue' study with American Express GBT in the US in May 2021. More than four out of five business travellers surveyed said that business travel leads to an 85% increase in both profits and revenues.

Read also: Payment solutions: the race for innovation

Is a payment solution such as the debit card losing ground as a result of the fall in air travel? How can you offset this decline?

A. B. - American Express is a long-standing player in the packaged card and customers are still very keen on this solution. But obviously, its use has been sharply reduced in 2020 and 2021. So we have counterbalanced this by targeting other types of expenditure, playing on the added value we can bring to businesses in terms of cash flow and service. Over the last three to four years, we have begun to transfer this value to other spending commodities Our aim is to create a second pillar to complement the travel business. We are also seeing significant growth in this segment.

Over the last three to four years, we have begun to transfer this value to other spending commodities such as temporary staffing, digital spending, strategic suppliers, etc.

What does this mean in practice?

A. B. - Let's take temporary work as an example. This can be a fairly large budget, with a high volume of expenditure on a small number of suppliers. Between the company and the temporary employment agency, we position our dematerialised payment solutions, enabling our customers to benefit from payment terms of up to 58 daysThis is a real benefit for their cash flow. But this can also apply to all overheads, office supplies and IT equipment, all of which can be easily managed via a digital portal.

Is this one of the reasons behind your recent partnership with Amazon Business for a co-branded card?

A. B. - If you're talking about major accounts, the historical question is how to install a card in the travel agency to be able to finance travel. As far as VSEs and SMEs are concerned, using Amex payment methods to finance travel is only part of our value proposition. These types of companies mainly use our solutions for their strategic purchasingto support and develop their business. For example, a dentist will use his card to pay the supplier of the materials he needs for his business. This card, co-branded with Amazon Business France, offers company directors payment terms of 60 to 90 days for their professional purchases, including IT equipment, office supplies and professional tools. There's a real desire to diversify, while retaining our historical focus on business travel.

The card co-branded with Amazon Business France offers payment terms of 60 to 90 days for their business purchases.

In terms of partnerships, you should have seen a drop in the use of your co-branded card with Air France.

A. B. - Clearly, in 2020 and 2021, we have seen a drop. Especially as, if you don't have a trip to make, you don't have a taxi or restaurant to pay for either. But we are confident. This individual Corporate card is still essential for travellersThis is particularly true of the Miles earned for every euro spent principle and the additional 30-day payment period. This gives companies time to process expense claims and reimburse them before their employees are debited. Our partnership with Air France, which is about to celebrate its 25th anniversary, is extremely solid. We also have specific solutions co-branded with Air France KLM for very small businesses, which also offer extended payment terms.

However, since the Mooncard with this company, you no longer have a monopoly in this relationship. Do you take offence?

A. B. - We are on different uses. Amex's core value to its customers is the ability to pay a supplier flexibly and agilely within 48 hours, while benefiting from a deferred payment period of up to 58 days, enabling companies to optimise their cash flow. The added value of our solutions for businesses is not identical.

We're now seeing a number of solutions moving towards greater integration of payment and expense reporting. Are you interested in this development?

A. B. - Our aim is to remain the best and to innovate in what we know how to do, i.e. payment. We have not chosen to develop any solutions or software for expense claims. Instead, we have chosen to join forces and to work with all the playersKDS, Concur, Traveldoo and others. Amex is interoperable with them, and all our data flows are integrated. For certain types of expense, we are developing partnerships with industry experts, such as those working with expense claim tools, but also with GDSs and HBAs.

How are your solutions responding to the increasing digitalisation of payments?

A. B. - We are working with our retailers to ensure that our individual card is increasingly accepted for contactless use. As a reminder, the maximum spending limit for our contactless cards was €50, well before the start of the health crisis. Of course, we also offer mobile payment with Apple Pay where you can integrate an American Express card, whether for businesses or individuals. Finally, for all online purchases, we have developed an innovation in our strong authentication system SafeKey, which meets the requirements of PSD2 regulations. In practice, however, the customer experience can be a little tedious, with the need to enter a code received by text message, for example... And what's true for the user is also true for merchants, with a number of transactions ultimately going unanswered.

So what innovation has American Express come up with to improve this tedious process?

A. B. - American Express has created something unique, the Express List, which enables cardholders to select a list of trusted retailersThese include Air France KLM, Amazon, Carrefour and Transavia. As a result, when they make purchases from them, they are exempt from strong authentication, unless of course our systems detect a risk of fraud. This is particularly useful when you are travelling abroad.

We also support the transition of the travel and tourism industry to a sustainable, low-carbon future.

CSR is another of today's major trends. How is American Express tackling this issue?

A. B. - We are committed to supporting the transition to a more sustainable future and a low-carbon economy. Since 2018, American Express, through its reduction and offsetting actions, has been contributing to the carbon neutrality of its operations at a global level. At the end of 2021, we announced an acceleration of our commitments. By 2035, our ambition is to achieve "zero net emissions". emissions, fifteen years ahead of the 2050 target set by the Paris Agreement. To achieve this ambition, we will work with our suppliers to reduce their impact on the company's value chain by monitoring, reducing and ultimately neutralising their own greenhouse gas emissions. We also support the travel and tourism industry's transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future. We recently joined the World Economic Forum's Clean Skies for Tomorrow coalition, which aims toensuring the transition to sustainable aviation fuels and the achievement of a carbon-neutral air transport. In the same vein, we joined the World Economic Forum's Sustainable Tourism Council, which brings together leaders from government, business and academia to advance innovation in inclusive and sustainable tourism.

Arnaud Bernet, Key Account Sales Director for France at American Express Cartes, reviews the latest news from his group,
