{"id":126031,"date":"2022-06-06T13:01:37","date_gmt":"2022-06-06T11:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/?p=126031"},"modified":"2023-03-06T15:39:35","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T14:39:35","slug":"war-in-ukraine-impact-europe-asia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/war-in-ukraine-impact-europe-asia","title":{"rendered":"100 days of war in Ukraine: a lasting impact on Europe-Asia air traffic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European agency in charge of air traffic control, <strong>Eurocontrol<\/strong>recently published some edifying statistics on the<strong> flight times between Europe and Asia<\/strong>, <strong>before and after Russia's war in Ukraine<\/strong>. And this at a time when the European Union has banned Russian aircraft from flying over its territory and Russia has taken similar measures in retaliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To measure the effect of the conflict in Ukraine on long-haul flights to Asia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/eurocontrol-confirme-reprise-trafic-20210915.html\/\">Eurocontrol<\/a> selected <strong>four European cities<\/strong> and analysed the distances travelled between these four departure points and a series of Asian destinations. This is the case of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/finnair-periode-post-russe-20220410.html\/\">Finnair<\/a> which interrupted its services to Beijing, Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo Haneda<\/strong> (the airline still serves Narita). SAS Scandinavian Airlines has also abandoned its flights between Copenhagen and Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This decision is motivated by passenger and freight demand, additional fuel costs, scheduling, staffing and airport constraints (boarding gates and curfews). In some cases, there is also a lack of suitable aircraft to serve the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-helsinki-hub-le-plus-touche-par-la-guerre-en-ukraine\"><span style=\"color: #a71f31;\">Helsinki, the hub hardest hit by the war in Ukraine<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Again according to Eurocontrol, if a route is not cancelled, <strong>however, its frequency is often reduced <\/strong>(see table). In its analysis, the agency notes that Helsinki has seen a record number of airlines affected by the closure of Russian airspace. Eurocontrol states that<strong> passengers now have to reckon with additional distances ranging from 1,400 km for Singapore to almost 4,000 km for Seoul<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To put these figures in context, <strong>1,400 km translates into 1.25 hours extra flying time, and 4,000 km adds 7 hours.<\/strong> for a round trip between Helsinki and Seoul. Before the war, the flight from Helsinki to Seoul took 8.5 hours. Today it is 12 hours. The extra seven hours on a round trip is almost as much as a one-way trip before the closure of southern airspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/paris-tokyo-ana-20220505.html\/\" data-id=\"124553\">ANA: Paris-Tokyo flight a collateral victim of the war in Ukraine<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>Copenhagen is also being extended by around 1,500 km to Singapore and Shanghai. Further south, <strong>Amsterdam and Frankfurt are less affected<\/strong>. But there are significant longer flight times to Seoul, Japan and China (Beijing and Shanghai).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It's a fact, <strong>Seoul remains the most affected destination<\/strong>Regardless of the airline chosen. This is not preventing traffic from resuming, however. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/korean-air-vols-europe-plus-longs-20220315.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Korean Air <\/strong><\/a>has just announced the return of<strong>a fifth weekly flight from Paris-CDG to Seoul on 12 June<\/strong>. And who will move to <strong>daily frequency<\/strong> from<strong> 1st July<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, <strong>the war had no impact on India, Singapore or Thailand<\/strong>as well as <strong>from Amsterdam than from Frankfurt<\/strong>. It should also be noted that there are no <strong>no difference in journey times for Chinese airlines<\/strong> flying to Europe since the start of the war.
