Hence this initiative, to to better understand where we areThe aim was to bring together the management of our key accounts in Northern Europe, including leading players in the pharmaceutical, consulting, entertainment, engineering and construction sectors from Germany, Austria, Sweden, the UK and Poland.

Read also: Corporate clients, meetings, SMEs: interview with Markus Keller (Accor)

What lessons did you learn from this year's meeting?

S. H. - The first conclusion corroborates what has been said since the start of the pandemic, we will probably lose 20% of business travel forever. And this is because they will be replaced by virtual means or, quite simply, because we realise that they are not necessary. This idea of "purpose of travel "This was a recurring theme at our meeting. All our customers now have travel policies in place asking their staff to think twice before travelling.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-126155 size-full" src="https://www.voyages-d-affaires.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/sofitel-frankfurt-opera.jpg" alt="Room at the Sofitel Frankfurt Opera, where the Masters of Travel meeting was held. Peter Krausgrill

Yet the latest figures published by hotel groups, airlines and Mastercard show a real upturn in business travel. Isn't this inconsistent with the predicted decline?

S. H. - It's true, the recovery is here and we've even been surprised by its speed. As soon as the borders reopened, we saw extraordinary peaks, far higher than any of our forecasts. The desire to travel is there. Domestic traffic is largely at 2019 levels, with customers from neighbouring countries visiting our hotels, even if this is not enough to entirely offset the absence of American and Asian business travellers, who, when they return, will enable us to get back to 2019 levels. As far as demand for meetings & events is concerned, we're already back at this stage and, over the last few weeks, we've been seeing requests to book seminars for more than 200-300 people for 2023. We feel that theompanies are once again planning and budgeting their events. After that, we know that the situation will stabilise, but at what level? It is still difficult to know. That said, the assumption of 20% fewer business trips remains the most likely.

In addition to this expected loss, the assumption was made during the pandemic that there would probably be fewer, but longer business trips in the future. Do you think this will be the case?

S. H. - In terms of the number of overnight stays generated by business travel, we haven't seen any major changes for the time being. During discussions with our customers, we mentioned the possibility of doing just one three-day trip instead of three one-day trips, one of the reasons being to limit the number of plane journeys. To be honest, they're not there yet. They all think it's a good idea, but nobody has incorporated it into their travel policy.

We are seeing requests to book seminars for more than 200-300 people for 2023. We can feel that companies are starting to plan and budget their events again.

However, could intercontinental business travel, which is starting to pick up again, be more conducive to longer trips?

S. H. - It has to be said that these trips have always tended to be longer. You don't just go to New York or San Francisco for a day or two. But as far as these trips are concerned, we feel that weekends could become an increasingly integral part of business travelThis also means cheaper tickets. We have begun to see this development in bleisure. But, as long-haul travel has only just started up again, as you say, we don't have a huge base from which to make more detailed analyses. We'll see if this trend takes hold in the future.

Pullman Liverpool © Abaca Press/Didier Delmas

While bleisure wasn't always viewed very favourably by companies, do you think the pandemic has changed the way they look at this issue?

S. H. - In the same way as for teleworking, there is a change in mentality on this point. Companies are much more flexible and are adapting to travellers' desire to travel differently, to live differently. At the beginning, a number of companies weren't really open to bleisure; they demanded strict compliance with their travel policy. Today, it's clear that travellers have rights and that companies soften their stance and even see bleisure as an advantage in meeting their employees' expectations.

In addition to these trends, you will no doubt have discussed a topical issue with your customers: inflation and the growth in hotel rates, which for several months now have exceeded 2019 levels. How do they see these rising costs?

S. H. - We were surprised to find that companies saw this rate increase in a completely natural way. No doubt because they themselves are faced with high energy costs or rising wages. From there, we opened the debate on how to compensate for this increase. For example, as the RFP season gets underway, we are going to propose intelligent solutions with discounts for longer stays. For us, a three-night stay represents a number of advantages, including the fact that we don't have to go back to bed. So we could pass on this advantage to our customers to offset the increase in rates. But there will be an increase, that's for sure.

No doubt a large part of your discussions revolved around the other major topic of the moment, eco-responsibility.

S. H. - A huge number of questions were asked on this subject. Our customers have pressing CSR needs. Hence the need to understand their expectations and explain what we are doing on our side. Accor, for example, was the first group to announce its goal of zero net emissions by 2050. We've been doing a lot of things for a long time, and others are under way, notably the ban on single-use plastics from the end of this year, but we haven't yet made them very visible until everything is well structured.

If there's one point on which companies are sending out a huge SOS, it's the assessment of the carbon cost of each trip.

What do companies expect from a hotel group like yours?

S. H. - If there is one point on which companies are sending a huge SOSIt's about assessing the carbon footprint of each trip. Today, offsetting carbon emissions is no longer enough, we need to find ways of reducing them. To achieve this, our customers are asking us to be able to give them the carbon expenditure hotel by hotelThe aim is also to make this footprint visible to travellers, so that they can make choices in line with their company's CSR objectives. And also to make this footprint visible to travellers so that they can make a choice in line with the company's CSR objectives.

A number of initiatives have been taken recently to help companies better understand the carbon footprint of their business travel, including HRS with its Green Stay label or by American Express Cards with comprehensive dashboards. How is the hotel industry tackling this crucial issue for businesses?

S. H. - This is one of the major challenges facing the entire industry in the years ahead. If everyone starts developing their own solution, customers will end up finding it difficult to find their way around. Accor is therefore working with the other chains - in particular our Chief Sustainability Officer, Brune Poirson, who is very familiar with all these issues - to create global standards that can be audited. It's no longer enough to say "I do this" or "I do that". You have to be able to prove it, with identical checks for everyone. It's going to take a long time, but it's essential.

Novotel London Canary Wharf © Abaca Press/Didier Delmas

Is this carbon footprint assessment also essential for the MICE segment?

S. H. - We already have the "net zero carbon calculator", a system that calculates the carbon footprint of a meeting in a particular hotel. This is based on the size of the meeting room and the number of participants, as well as the way in which they travel to the hotel - by train, car or plane. Based on this calculation, they can immediately offset the impact of the event with the NGO myclimate, with which Accor works. In fact, the Masters of Travel and all our group's internal meetings are fully offset in this way. This solution is very popular with companies, but, as they tell us, it's not enough, it's not enough. We need to make decisions to reduce our carbon footprint, so that we can make an informed choice of hotel.

Could this have an impact on the choice of destinations in the future?

S. H. - We once calculated the carbon footprint of a meeting for a client who was hesitating between Dubai and a European destination. And when we did the calculation, they immediately abandoned the idea of Dubai in favour of the European destination. If you take into account air travel, the difference was so impressive that they didn't even suggest the idea to their staff. I think thatmore and more companies will be turning to alternative destinations to 'sunny' destinations. For example, Croatia or Spain in Europe, or they'll go and try something else, ice fishing in the far north and things like that, without going as far as they did before. This will allow other destinations to develop that could be interesting for MICE.

The Accor group recently brought together its key account clients in Northern Europe for the Masters of Travel.
