For the first time, the international business travel association was devoting an entire day to a new product. <strong>\"Sustainability Summit<\/strong>in advance of its 'classic' event. It was also the first time that GBTA Europe had left the German market, the preserve of its long-standing partner VDR. And for this first relocation, GBTA Europe's annual conference set its sights on <strong>Brussels<\/strong>. A destination of choice from a logistical point of view, as it facilitates the transport of participants by train, and is therefore consistent with a sustainable summit. It was also a strategic destination for getting closer to the European authorities and making the GBTA's voice heard. \" <em>Brussels is an opportunity. We've been talking to Europe since 2015, and we're familiar with the workings of the European systems. And with sustainability at the heart of many decisions at European level, it made sense for the summit to be held in Brussels. <\/em>\"explains St\u00e9phane Vallageas, a member of the GBTA Europe Board. And while he refutes the lobbying purpose of the event, he is delighted to have been able to attract these institutional players: \" <em>While we were in Brussels, we were lucky enough to welcome a lot of people from the European Commission to the stage. These are very busy people, who we wouldn't necessarily have been able to bring together outside Brussels. It was also an opportunity to acknowledge the <strong>GBTA recognition <\/strong>as a key partner for European bodies in the field of business travel <\/em>\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/transport-environnement-travel-ranking-20250408.html\/\" data-id=\"197013\">Travel policies and CO2 emissions: good and bad performers according to T&amp;E<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"524\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/gbta-europe-sustainable.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-136315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/gbta-europe-sustainable.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/gbta-europe-sustainable-300x225-derived.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/gbta-europe-sustainable-80x60-derived.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/gbta-europe-sustainable-265x198-derived.jpg 265w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Sustainability Summit organised by GBTA Europe brought together nearly 300 participants at The Square in Brussels.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/saf-carburant-aerien-acceleration-20220930.html\/\" data-id=\"132497\">FAS, the new green gold for airlines<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside representatives of the European authorities, GBTA Europe has succeeded in mobilising speakers of the highest calibre in the field of business travel. This has facilitated dialogue between private and public players, giving them the opportunity to reflect on the role of each in the necessary sustainable transition, against the backdrop of the debate between incentives and regulations...\". <em>Companies are ready to act and to do more, but without regulation, I think they would move much more slowly. <\/em>\"says Brune Poirson, Accor's Director of Sustainable Development. \" <em>That said, good regulations cannot be put in place without collaboration with the private sector, which is where what I call \"positive lobbying\" comes in.<\/em> \".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-quote\"><blockquote><p>It's good to have a vision. But a vision without a plan is just a dream...<\/p><cite>Paul Abbott, CEO of American Express GBT<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>Omnipresent during the debates, the <strong>SAF <\/strong>was a concrete illustration of this still uncertain balance between the carrot and the stick. And to remind the mainly European audience that the old continent still suffers from the comparison with the United States in particular, as the CEO of American Express GBT, Paul Abbott, points out: \" <em>Regulations are important, rules and targets have been set in the European Union. But what is the point of setting targets at 65% of SAF if there is no production, no supply? We need regulations, but above all we need incentives. And the United States has understood this. L'<strong>Inflation Reduction Act<\/strong> (IRA) has attracted $370,000,000 in investment in clean technologies. This is a significant step forward, which will have a profound impact on accelerating decarbonisation in the US. And thanks to these incentives, I think the US is ahead of the EU in really tackling carbon emissions over the next decade. We should be seeing similar actions in the EU rather than restrictions. It's good to have a vision. But a vision without a plan is just a dream...<\/em> \"warns Paul Abbott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-le-discours-de-la-methode\">The method<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This first environmental summit will also have highlighted another crucial issue, that of the <strong>data<\/strong>. While some of the figures are known, business travellers and travel managers still need to be given the keys to making an informed choice. \"\u00a0<em>Our research in the United States shows that<strong>a passenger can reduce his carbon footprint per journey by 22% to 63% by choosing the most efficient flight<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\"says Dan Rutherford, Program Director at the International Council on Clean Transportation. But there is still a great deal of confusion when it comes to quantifying the impact of the different segments of business travel. Hence the importance of adopting reliable methodologies, as explained by Shelley Fletcher-Bryant, Senior Director, Sales &amp; Client Relationship Management at Advito: \"\u00a0<em>It is very encouraging that methodologies are being recognised, such as that of IATA or the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/advito-entreprises-empreinte-carbone-20220921.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advito<\/a>. A lot of work has been done over the last three years. But at the moment there are a lot of different methodologies<\/em>\" . Shelley Fletcher-Bryant continues: \"\u00a0<em>I think that once we have a centralised methodology that is recognised by everyone, and I hope that this will be the case in the first or second quarter of 2023, the big challenge will be to know how it will be implemented. And that's going to be a key issue for the industry, whether it's TMCs, OBTs, travel managers... Because let's face it: someone is going to have to pay for it to be integrated...<\/em>\" .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/interview-stephane-vallageas-buyer-20221117.html\/\" data-id=\"136215\">Interview with St\u00e9phane Vallageas: St\u00e9phane Vallageas, Global Lead Buyer, Capgemini<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the scale of the task and the investment involved, and the difficulties that lie ahead, Shelley Fletcher-Bryant is pragmatic: \"\u00a0<em>Don't let perfection stand in the way of your progress<\/em>\" . Clearly, the time has come to take action and make decisions, even if it means identifying areas for improvement. Players like GBTA are working on this, as is the <strong>partnership with the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance<\/strong> - which aims to improve the measurement of carbon footprints in the hotel sector - or, more generally, the Sustainability Program launched last year. And a date has already been set to take things a step further. Visit <strong>next Sustainability Summit<\/strong> is expected in another major decision-making hub: <strong>Washington<\/strong>. As for the next GBTA Europe conference, it will be returning to Germany in just over a year's time, from <strong>14 to 16 November 2023 at<\/strong> <strong>Hamburg<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-highlight-box\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The comeback of business travel is taking shape, and is raising questions...<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At its annual conference, the <strong>GBTA Europe<\/strong> has unveiled its forecasts for the coming months. Based on a survey of some 600 members - buyers and suppliers worldwide - the association estimates that <strong>2023 will be the year of the rebound<\/strong>. The vast majority of travel managers (78 %) expect their companies to increase business travel next year. \"At the end of this year we should reach 65% [pre-Covid travel spending levels], and we don't expect a full recovery before mid-2026\", explained Suzanne Neufang, CEO of GBTA, on stage at the Square in Brussels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This raises two questions: should we really expect business travel to make a strong comeback? And what value should be placed on medium-term forecasts in a context that remains uncertain? The Sustainability Summit on 8 November provided contradictory answers to the first question. Asked to respond to a statement by Heathrow management to the effect that \" <em>until we find a solution to reduce emissions from air travel, we all need to fly less<\/em> \"The panel at the first conference was divided. \" <em>I understand the logic of this statement, but I respectfully disagree with it because I don't think that reducing demand will work to achieve our objectives.<\/em> \"says Paul Abbott. The CEO of American Express GBT invites us to <strong>put the share of business travel in relation to leisure or freight into perspective<\/strong>. \" <em>If you want to achieve net 0 by reducing demand, you'll have to start with individual travel and leisure, which is by far the biggest source of emissions. <\/em>\". And to conclude: \" <em>Our focus must be above all on FAS <\/em>\". A view challenged by Denise Auclair, Corporate Travel Campaign Manager for Transport &amp; Environment. \" <em>It's not a question of flying less or using SAF: both are necessary. <\/em>\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the credibility to be given to projections over the more or less long term, it is time to take a closer look. <strong>caution<\/strong>. Pointing <em>environmental, geopolitical and economic impacts<\/em> \"Suzanne Neufang agrees: \" <em>if there's one certainty in our industry today, it's uncertainty<\/em> \". Harry Hohmeister, member of the Global Markets &amp; Network Board for the Lufthansa Group, agrees: \" <em>Expect the unexpected! <\/em>\". \" <em>I think we really need to learn to deal with reality, and I no longer believe in any projections beyond three months. <\/em>\".
