Why has the time come to tackle this market?

Fabrice Collet - It's always time to build the foundations for our future growth. Historically, B&B Hotels has always set its sights on new territories, whether it be Germany since 2000, Italy in 2010, Spain and Brazil in 2015, even if, in the latter country, which has been subject to numerous social and political upheavals, we have only met with half-success. Today, it's the United States and the United Kingdom. As part of our plans to expand across the Atlantic, it's worth remembering that our main shareholder is Goldman Sachs and keep a watchful eye on our development there. Through their names and their networks, they open a lot of doors for us. For example, when I present what we're doing in Europe to my American contacts, I vaguely arouse their interest. But when I tell them that B&B Hotels is Goldman Sachs' biggest investment in Europe, their attention level suddenly increases.

B&B Hotels discover America

What opportunities do you see in this market?

Fabrice Collet - We visited hundreds of establishments in the United States and, apart from a few independent hotels that impressed us, it has to be said that the American budget chain hotel industry is pretty poor. They focus mainly on 'budget' concepts rather than 'value for money' with brands grouping together hotels of widely differing quality. As a result, to ensure their comfort and safety, travellers tend to opt for mid-range hotels, which are significantly more expensive. That's why we're convinced that we can offer the American consumer, who is also concerned about purchasing power, the best way to ensure their comfort and safety, value-for-money hotels as we do in France makes sense. And we will do this by continuing, at least initially, with our model of subsidiary hotels - which make up 92% of our portfolio - so that we retain control over the quality of our establishments.

Your goal is to have a network of 400 hotels within 10 years. How fast will you grow?

Fabrice Collet - No, we're going to take it easy at first. The best way to get started is to start with a first hotel, then learn from our mistakes and make a second one a little better. And so on until we have something that works well and can be deployed on an industrial scale. That's what we've done elsewhere. Our first hotels in Spain and Italy had mixed success, but today we are very satisfied with our networks in these two countries. Similarly, when B&B Hotels set up in Germany 20 years ago, the first five establishments were so unconvincing that our shareholders at the time asked my predecessor, Georges Sampeur, to close Germany. But he had the foresight to ask them for another chance. Today, we have 170 hotels across the Rhine. Our European experience has taught us that each of the 14 countries in which we operate is different, with its own tastes and expectations. After that, I'm well aware that the United States is not a country like any other. It's a world apartWith a totally different culture and totally different consumer habits. We have so much to learn.

B&B Hotel Evian Publier

B&B Hotel Brest Centre Port de Commerce

How will your offer be deployed?

Fabrice Collet - B&B Hotels has built its history by offering hotels along major roads. Customers, who generally travel by car, could therefore see their logo on a regular basis. That's how B&B got its start on the Brittany coast in France, then in the Rhine Valley in Germany and along the Po River in Italy. It just so happens that Florida fits these criteria, with its two major motorways, its 24 million inhabitants and its surface area a quarter the size of France.

When I point out to my American contacts that B&B Hotels is Goldman Sachs' biggest investment in Europe, their attention level suddenly increases.

You have also announced your forthcoming move into the UK in 2023. Where are you targeting?

Fabrice Collet - In the United Kingdom, there will be less of a notion of a motorway axis. We are targeting England and the densely populated area between London and Manchester. We haven't signed any contracts yet, but we have a team working on a lot of projects, so I'm very confident. However, you often have a specific place in mind at the start and then chance and business mean that you end up where you can. So we'll see.

The UK, the US, France too, where your development is sustained: your group is in a phase of "hyper-growth", as you describe it, with 3,000 hotels expected by 2030, compared with 700 today. Is it feasible to reach this target?

Fabrice Collet - I have set this target of 3,000 hotels with our teams for 2019. At the time, we were opening 40 to 50 hotels a year. By 2022, we had opened around a hundred, and I hope that this will still be the case in 2023. We will need to be able to open 200 new stores a year in two or three years' time and then 500 in six years' time. That's what it's all about. For the moment, we're on track with our roadmap.

What are the ingredients for this hyper-growth?

Fabrice Collet - In France, we think we can go up to 600 hotels. Looking at the number of Ibis hotels in France and Premier Inn hotels in the UK, we know that there is room for networks of around 500 to 1,000 units in these two major countries. At the same time, we're expanding our presence in Italy, Germany and Spain, while establishing ourselves in new territories such as Denmark this year. The relaxation of our standards is another factor in this growth. Fifteen years ago, a B&B hotel often had the same floor plan, the same room, the same type of location. Today, we are much more diversified. You'll find B&Bs in the centre of main, secondary or tertiary towns as well as on their outskirts, in very business areas as well as in ski resorts or near theme parks such as Disneyland. What's more, we've expanded our development methods, which were previously based on new build, by opening up our horizons. hotel takeovers or small groups and conversion of other banners.

B&B Hotels: destination Toulon, before other openings in 2023

With your recent takeover of the Roi Soleil hotels in Eastern France, you are integrating both three- and four-star hotels. As you plan to add more than 2,000 establishments to your network, will this lead you to segment your offering?

Fabrice Collet - In fact, having four-star hotels in our portfolio is nothing new for us. In Florence, you can find the B&B Pitti Palace al Ponte Vecchio, with its exceptional location and meticulous decoration. In Spain, the B&B Madrid Airport T4, opposite this terminal, is also the result of the takeover of a top-of-the-range independent hotel. In accordance with the owner's wishes, we have kept this level and its larger rooms. But we stayed true to the B&B model, with no superfluous services. We have sublet the restaurant, and the conference and wedding rooms have been closed...

B&B Hotel Milan Sant'Ambrogio

Do you think having meeting rooms is an unnecessary service for a hotel?

Fabrice Collet - Hoteliers often say that they are very important, that they help to fill the hotel, and so on. This conviction, which I respect, has never stood up to the test of figures. When you look at the cost of their distribution and the complexity of their management. So when a hotel has meeting rooms, we either condemn them and stop heating them, or we turn them into rooms. That's the secret: purge our product of all these additional services that may be useful on certain days, but which have a daily impact on the price of the room. So you get value for money which our customers are kind enough to tell us is sometimes remarkable.

Has the general trend in the hotel industry to open up lobbies and fill them with lively bars and restaurants spread to B&B Hotels? What can you guarantee business travellers?

Fabrice Collet - The first requirement of the business traveller, beyond a good night's sleep and a good breakfast, is Wifi. And as you know, at B&B Hotels, we were the first to offer free Wi-Fi at a time when it was customary to charge guests for this service, and then to install fibre optics in all our hotels. Now that's the basic contract with the business traveller. Secondly, our hotels, which have been open for ten years or so, generally offer a well-lit lobby with guest tables where you can sit down to drink a coffee and work, with sockets where you can plug in your computer. To offer all this in our lobbies, yes. Having bars here and there, why not, but always bearing in mind that we have to offer the essentials without services that would inflate the price.

B&B Hotel Le Port-Marly, in Saint-Germain-En-Laye

Prices, inflation, purchasing power... This is a very topical issue.

Fabrice Collet - Indeed, 2023 will be the year of purchasing power. Travellers in Europe are caught between two contradictions: the desire to travel after the Covid period and being able to continue travelling without compromising their comfort. In times of crisis, people realise that quality budget hotels, of which we are one of the representatives, have a role to play. For €70, we offer something that has never been done before. not much to envy from superior hotels between 120 and 150 euros. The same battle is being waged by companies, with the bosses of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) adopting the same line of reasoning. As for the larger groups, their purchasing departments have been working on this thorny issue for several months: how to reduce the cost of a business trip without having to give up visiting clients who have not been seen for months. For all these companies, B&B Hotels can offer tailor-made packages and a selection of hotels dedicated to corporate clients, without compromising employee satisfaction.

The secret: purge our product of all additional services that have an impact on the room rate to guarantee excellent value for money.

You reported excellent results for the year, with growth in revenue per room of 13% compared with 2019. How do you explain this good dynamic?

Fabrice Collet - There are many reasons for this. For me, the most interesting goes back to the confinements, when most of our hotels opted to stay open while others did the opposite. Travellers who had to continue moving around during this period sometimes found their usual hotels closed and had to stay in their rooms. crossed the road to arrive at a B&B hotel. Many of these customers have remained loyal to our brand ever since. The second reason I see is that, apart from a few slowdowns, we have never stopped investing. Our customers can see that the network is being renovated, modernised and moved forward. Finally, we have never stopped investing in our teams. B&B Hotels has never had a redundancy or restructuring plan. We haven't had the pain of letting staff go, or the difficulty of hiring them back. This has contributed to the operational efficiency of our hotels.

How is B&B Hotels tackling the very topical issue of CSR?

Fabrice Collet - CSR is at the heart of our concerns, because they are those of our customers, our employees, our bankers, our shareholders and the public authorities. We approach this essential subject from three angles. Firstly, through the certification and auditing of our actions by Socotec, so as not to give our customers the unpleasant impression of greenwashing. Our other priority is to assure our customers that when they come to live with us, they will find one of the most effective solutions on the market in terms of CO2. The first figures I have confirm that we're heading in the right direction, even if we still have a lot of work to do. In any case, we're actively working on it and we'll soon be proposing solutions. Finally, there's one last key area of CSR for us: people. The budget hotel sector plays a formidable role in social mobility and integration. We are already doing a number of things informally, for example with the Ecole de la seconde chance in France. Tomorrow, we need to organise this in a more industrial way, with training centres and education courses. There's a lot of work to be done. It's on our agenda for the coming months.

Expansion in the United States and England, hyper-growth, excellent value for money, CSR: Fabrice Collet,
