For business, but also for pleasure. Because you really can find everything in Gangnam-gu. Yet constant bustle has not always been the golden rule in this urban condensation of the new South Korea. Not so long ago, the only thing wafting through the air here was the scent of incense, accompanied by the chanting of the Bongeunsa temple, founded by Buddhist monks in the 8th century. Today, this same temple, the only reminder of a time when Gangnam-gu was still literally \"south of the river\", survives in the shadow of the vast forest of buildings above which, at 228 metres, the 54th floor of the Korean World Trade Centre stands enthroned. Gangnam-gu is also the main thoroughfare of Teheranno, which has become Teheran Valley since the invasion of the new technology giants. Yahoo and Google, of course, but also rival Korean portals Naver and Daum. International flagships in telecommunications and electronics, such as LG and Samsung, can also be found around the same thoroughfare.<\/p>\n<p>Business, then, but not just business. One piece of evidence: the 85,000 m2 Coex Mall. The proof is in the 200,000 people who pass through its hundreds of shops, its handful of food courts and its spectacular video arcades every day. A few hundred metres away, in Apgujeong's Rodeo Street, the decor is more upscale and the window-shopping competition is in full swing between all the major luxury brands, from fashion to cars.<\/p>\n<p>But Gangnam is also about good taste. Like here, at the Galleria, a sort of Bon March\u00e9 design revamped in 2004 by Amsterdam architects UNStudio; and here, Boon the Shop, the most cutting-edge fashion art gallery. All around, hotels, galleries and even office buildings no longer hesitate to adopt the most audacious architectural styles.<\/p>\n<p>A symbol: the Huyndai building designed by Daniel Libeskind to celebrate the harmony between man and machine. A natural credo for the district. But it can also be applied in other ways. The balance between work and quality of life, for example. The local government - Gangnam gained its 'autonomy' in 1998 - is playing the ecology card, developing the whole range of measures. Parks are being added to the forest of buildings, with the aim of creating a hundred or so green spaces in the whole district. Introduced three years ago, and for the first time in Korea, the Carbon Mileage System has already led to significant reductions in greenhouse gases. In November, 120 bicycles were made available near the main metro stations, in a V\u00e9lib' spirit that is growing by leaps and bounds.
