{"id":146403,"date":"2023-04-06T11:14:27","date_gmt":"2023-04-06T09:14:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/?p=146403"},"modified":"2023-08-23T16:25:32","modified_gmt":"2023-08-23T14:25:32","slug":"iata-focus-africa-aviation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/iata-focus-africa-aviation","title":{"rendered":"IATA \"Focus Africa\" will strengthen aviation's contribution to Africa's development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid3\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\"<\/span><em><strong> <\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">L'<\/span><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Africa <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">represents 18<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">% of the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">world population, but only 2.1<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">% for air transport activities (freight and passengers combined). <strong>\"Focus Africa<\/strong><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">aims to close this gap, so that Africa can benefit from the connectivity, jobs and growth associated with aviation.<\/span> <\/em><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\"explains Willie<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Walsh, Director General of IATA, at the presentation of the initiative <\/span>\"Focus Africa\" on 3 April.&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-resoudre-d-urgence-pertes-financieres-et-penurie-de-devises\">Urgent action needed: financial losses and shortage of foreign currency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span id=\"page3R_mcid4\" class=\"markedContent\">L'<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/afrique-centrale-occidentale-reprise-2022-20230102.html\/\">Africa <\/a><\/span><\/strong><span id=\"page3R_mcid4\" class=\"markedContent\">is suffering from<span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>limited infrastructure, high operating costs and a lack of connectivity<\/strong>. In addition <strong>obstacles <\/strong><\/span><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">standards and labour shortages.<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>work<\/strong>. All these factors are detrimental to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">customer experience and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the viability and sustainability of African airlines. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid4\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">What's more, the continent's airlines find themselves in the midst of an economic crisis.<strong> financial insecurity<\/strong>. They have undergone <strong>cumulative losses of <\/strong><\/span><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">3,5<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">billion<\/span> <\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>$<\/strong> over the 2020 period<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">2022. IATA also remains pessimistic about short-term trends. The association estimates that <strong>losses in 2023 will still amount to 213<\/strong><\/span><strong> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">millions<\/span> <\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>$<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid5\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"markedContent\">African airlines are also facing another time bomb. It's called <strong>currency shortage<\/strong>. IATA estimates that<strong> 1.6 billion in funds belonging to airlines, which are currently blocked in various African countries<\/strong>. IATA is now trying to reduce a foreign exchange deficit that has increased by 25 % in the last six months of 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/afrique-voyages-affaires-remontent-pente-20210421.html\/\" data-id=\"108511\">Africa: business travel slowly recovering<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-devises-bloquees-lignes-aeriennes-suspendues\">Currencies blocked, airlines suspended<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"markedContent\">This situation worries the association. \"\u00a0<em><strong>The people who suffer from these blocked funds are the consumers of these markets<\/strong>Airlines cannot be expected to continue providing services if they are not paid.<\/em>\" said Willie Walsh, IATA Director General. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"markedContent\">IATA states that the impossibility of recovering these funds <\/span>could lead to <strong>air service interruptions<\/strong> if no progress is made in negotiations to release the funds due. This <strong>would further disconnect Africa's airspace from the rest of the planet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In Nigeria, for example,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/nigeria-aerien-20220822.html\/\"> British Airways has suspended its flights<\/a><\/strong>This is due to the impossibility of recovering foreign currency. The government is blocking any conversion of local currency by the airlines. Airlines can no longer repatriate their ticket sales revenue. On the IATA list of countries withholding funds, <strong>Alongside Nigeria, there are also Algeria and Ghana.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid5\" class=\"markedContent\">If this currency problem is resolved, the \"Focus Africa\" initiative will come into its own. It aims to <strong>r<\/strong><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid6\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>ustainably linking the continent through transcontinental and intercontinental routes<\/strong>s. <\/span>And so stimulate economic development <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and socia<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">l. <\/span><br><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/royal-air-maroc-oneworld-3-20220330.html\/\" data-id=\"123089\">Royal Air Maroc and oneworld finally celebrate their alliance<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"451\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/lagos-airport.jpg\" alt=\"Africa\" class=\"wp-image-146511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/lagos-airport.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/lagos-airport-300x169-derived.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/lagos-airport-768x433-derived.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>IATA 2022 figures (Lagos Airport, Hansueli Krapf, Wikimedia Commons)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid6\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>For IATA, the continent's connectivity is essential to the development of tourism and trade.<\/strong>. These are the main providers of jobs and income. Before the Covid, <\/span><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">aviation supported 7.7<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">million jobs and generated 63<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">billion<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in economic activity<\/span> <\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>in Africa<\/strong>. IATA is optimistic about demand over the next few years. The association expects it to triple over the next two decades. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-six-domaines-d-action-pour-iata\">Six areas of action for IATA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid8\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\"<\/span> <em><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Africa stands out as the region with the greatest potential and the most potential for growth. <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>opportunities for aviation<\/strong>. The Focus Africa initiative reiterates IATA's commitment to aviation on the continent. As Chair-designate of IATA's Board of Governors, and the first to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Coming from Africa since 1993, I'm eager to get this initiative off to a flying start and deliver measurable benefits.<\/span> <\/em><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\"said Yvonne<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Makolo, CEO of RwandAir.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span id=\"page23R_mcid1\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page23R_mcid1\" class=\"markedContent\"><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Six<\/span> <\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>priority areas have been identified<\/strong> by the association for this initiative. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span id=\"page23R_mcid4\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page23R_mcid4\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">-<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page23R_mcid5\" class=\"markedContent\"><strong> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Security<\/span><\/strong> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Improving operational safety through a collaborative programme <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to reduce the number of safety incidents and accidents, both in flight and on the ground.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page23R_mcid6\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">-<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page23R_mcid7\" class=\"markedContent\"><strong> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Infrastructure<\/span><\/strong> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">To facilitate the growth of an efficient aviation infrastructure,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">secured<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">economic<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to improve customer experience and operational efficiency<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">-<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page23R_mcid11\" class=\"markedContent\"><strong> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Finance and distribution<\/span><\/strong> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">accelerate the implementation of secure financial services,<\/span><br role=\"presentation\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ICAO.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page23R_mcid14\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">-<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page23R_mcid15\" class=\"markedContent\"><strong> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Future skills<\/span> <\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">promoting careers in aviation and aerospace<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">uring availability<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"> skills to meet the industry's future needs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span id=\"page23R_mcid16\" class=\"markedContent\">D<span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">he partnerships will be announced and implemented at <\/span><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Addis Ababa on 20 and 21<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">June at the official launch of the Focus Africa initiative<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">. The aim is to enable African air traffic to flourish as it does in the rest of the world.<br><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/iata-benefices-2023-20230613.html\/\" data-id=\"150321\">IATA: airlines forecast a return to profitability in 2023<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-highlight-box\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RwandAir to arrive at Paris CDG in June<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After <strong>Brussels <\/strong>and <strong>London <\/strong>Heathrow, <strong>RwandAir <\/strong>lands in <strong>Paris<\/strong>. The African carrier will offer three weekly flights on <strong>15 June<\/strong> to Kigali. The aircraft will be an Airbus A330-300 offering two classes of service, Economy and Business Class. The flights will offer connections to the rest of Africa. Flights to Paris are not yet available for booking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RwandAir <\/strong>is one of the African airlines with one of the youngest and most modern fleets on the continent. RwandAir operates 12 aircraft with an average age of just under six years.
