{"id":153257,"date":"2023-07-28T12:02:06","date_gmt":"2023-07-28T10:02:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/?p=153257"},"modified":"2023-08-24T16:20:18","modified_gmt":"2023-08-24T14:20:18","slug":"punctuality-of-british-trains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/punctuality-of-british-trains","title":{"rendered":"Punctuality continues to deteriorate for British trains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We knew that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/gouvernement-britannique-secteur-ferroviaire-20200323.html\/\">British trains had a bad reputation<\/a> because of their poor performance in terms of punctuality and regularity. This negative image has just been confirmed by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On the rail lines managed by Network Rail, 67.8% of trains arrived on time.<\/strong> between April 2022 and March 2023. Over the previous period from April 2021 to the end of March 2022, punctuality was still 73.1%. This represents a year-on-year drop of 5.4%. And by 12% compared with the period 2020-2021. The recurring strikes in 2022 and early 2023 have, in fact, taken their toll on train regularity...<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/ligne-grande-vitesse-angleterre-20210824.html\/\" data-id=\"112783\">Uncertainties for the British high-speed rail network<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>Freight's performance stood at 86% of punctual trains. Although rail freight performed better than passenger rail traffic, this was still the lowest level of punctuality since this annual assessment began in 2014. <strong>Passenger train cancellations rose from 3.3% to 3.8%.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Train reliability and punctuality have continued to decline and delays attributed to Network Rail have worsened in all five UK regions. The ORR is now calling for <strong>Network Rail implements the improvement plans to which the agency is committed<\/strong>. ORR urges Network Rail to work with train operating companies to improve train performance for passengers and freight users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/2026-plan-sncb-20230801.html\/\" data-id=\"153339\">More than 2,000 extra trains per week by 2026 for SNCB<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-toutes-les-regions-touchees-par-la-degradation-de-la-ponctualite\">All regions affected by the deterioration in punctuality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Delays caused by Network Rail affect all 5 of the UK's rail regions<\/strong>. No region reached the target of 72% trains on time. <strong>The worst performers were the North West\/Central region at 43.7%.<\/strong>. The Wales\/West of England region recorded the second worst performance, at 47.4% of the initial target. <strong>As for the Southern region (where London is located), the average performance is just over 50%.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/screenshot-2023-07-28-at-16-17-17-annual.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"479\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/screenshot-2023-07-28-at-16-17-17-annual-1024x479-derived.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-153267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/screenshot-2023-07-28-at-16-17-17-annual-1024x479-derived.gif 1024w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/screenshot-2023-07-28-at-16-17-17-annual-300x140-derived.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/screenshot-2023-07-28-at-16-17-17-annual-768x360-derived.gif 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In particular, ORR blames the slowness with which Network Rail undertakes renovation or expansion work. <strong>The agency delivered 91.3 % of the actual renewal volumes planned for 2022\/2023.<\/strong>. Three of the five regions did not meet their targets. These include North West and Central England (89.3 %), Wales and the West (81.2 %) and Scotland (69.0 %). By contrast, the East of England (112.6 %) and South of England (104.0 %) regions exceeded their upgrade and renewal targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/retards-transports-france-20230731.html\/\" data-id=\"153233\">Punctuality: 2022, annus horribilis for transport in
