Seven years after the project was announced - when the lifestyle brand was still managed by the Starwood group, before its takeover by Marriott - and two years behind schedule - Covid having had its way with it - the hotel will finally open its doors next November. An inauguration that will complete major developmentSt James Quarter, Scotland's largest leisure and shopping district. More than 30 bars and restaurants, nearly 80 shops in the shopping arcade, 150 residential flats, a Roomzzz apartment-hotel and a car park for 1,600 cars: this project, led by Nuveen Real Estate, at a reported cost of £1 billion, has offered a new heart of the city to the east of the Scottish capital since its debut in 2021.

With its 244 rooms, including 45 suites, its rooftop restaurant featuring South American-Japanese fusion cuisine Sushisamba, its signature W Lounge and its Joao's Place cocktail bar, the W Edinburgh has now added an accommodation component. Its architectural touch is also appreciated by many. Never short of nicknames, some Edinburgh locals quickly dubbed the building the "Golden Turd" because of its spiral façade. A ribbon of steel reminiscent of the paper spirals of the many newspaper printing works that once operated in the area, but also reminiscent of an emoji that is often used negatively...

Whatever the case - and who cares if travellers come to enjoy W's expertise in lifestyle and entertainment - this new top-of-the-range hotel is part of a series of openings in the Scottish capital. Also in November, another highly anticipated establishment, 100 Princes Street, will open its doors on the city's main thoroughfare. And it's in a historic location, the former home of the Royal Overseas League, a glamorous club for leading Commonwealth figures.

Sketch of the 100 Princes Street luxury hotel.

Part of the Red Carnation collection of luxury hotels, the 100 Princes Street has been designed by the same team, notably Toni Tollman, who redesigned the prestigious Ashford Castle in Ireland, in an eminently British 'home away from home' spirit. Or rather Scottish, since, in addition to an incredible collection of whiskies - and an extensive wine list - the establishment has been carefully furnished with furniture and works of art from local craftsmen, including bespoke tartan by Araminta Campbell. Last year, other establishments had already been added, such as the Gleneagles Townhousethe urban and intimate counterpart to the famous Scottish resort, offering guests just 33 rooms and a members club. Also in 2022, the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Edinburgh saw the arrival of a Virgin Hotel, nestling within the historic walls of the India Buildings.

However, the Scottish capital's hotel development is not just focused on the very top end of the market. Recently, business travellers have also been able to find a place to stay in Scotland. Four Points by Sheraton The 69-room hotel is just a stone's throw from Haymarket station - which serves the UK's major cities - and is linked by tram to the airport. Another highlight is that it will be crowned by a roof terrace with an unobstructed view of Edinburgh Castle.

Before that, the brand The Hoxtondeveloped by Ennismore in the same way as Gleneagles Townhouse, will have completed the conversion of 10 Georgian houses to create a 211-room complex with restaurant and event facilities.
