Tokyo, that's a trip that really made an impression on me; it's funny, because at first I had no desire to go there! I thought the Japanese were so far removed from me, really foreign. In what language? In English? I was quite confused. But all my fears disappeared as soon as I arrived. My interpreter, a Japanese woman who had spent her childhood in Geneva, was the 'bridge' between the West and the East; she was both completely Japanese and completely Western.<\/p>\n
I went there for three concerts... and it was one surprise after another! The welcome is so warm, good-natured and full of humour. The Japanese have this free, very open way of talking about the atomic bomb, America... I fell in love with their cuisine! Since then, whenever I travel, I'm always on the lookout for the best sushi restaurant in town.<\/p>\n
Santa Fe, in New Mexico, I also went backwards. When I asked where it was, I was told: \"Next to Los Alamos\"... Los Alamos is where the first nuclear tests were carried out! In fact, it's an extraordinary place, right in the middle of the desert, immense, on the scale of America... it's also a very chic city, where New York, Chicago and Los Angeles all meet, each in their own country house... And then there's the mix of Spanish, Indian and American cultures, absolutely mind-boggling! Over there, I met some real patrons of the arts.<\/p>\n
Every time I travel, I meet new people: those who appreciate me on stage are curious to get to know me. And I too like to discover their way of life, to understand their reactions to culture, religion and education. I'm interested in the differences... In fact, as far as I'm concerned, the tangible link is a love of music. But in any case, I have a strong feeling that we're all very much alike; it's reassuring, it's a guarantee of peace.<\/p>\n
When I travel, I like to visit a city, if possible on foot and in concentric circles. I start from my hotel and go as far as the furthest districts. On my walks, I stop off at museums, especially painting museums, like the Frick Collection in New York, with its remarkable Vermeers. Back in my room, I need space, clarity, silence, comfort... I need to arrange all this to my liking; by moving the armchairs and the table, necessarily badly placed, in front of the window, and which prevent me from passing. A bit like being at home. Because, in the end, it's my home that I prefer, with my children and everything I love. I travel ten months out of the year, to the point where, after a long absence, I forget where the knives are kept. I'd like to shorten the travelling time; it's the waiting that makes it all a bit painful... I dream of tele-transportation! Interview by Karin Filhoulaud<\/p>\n
