Worse still, built on marshland, the capital is sinking below sea level as a result of the over-exploitation of groundwater, due to excessive and often illegal pumping. A situation that climate change is only set to accelerate.

As a result, in early 2022, Indonesian President Joko Widodo signed the relocation of the administrative capital of the country. This is the date of independence in 1945 for a country which, since the first presidency of Soekarno, had been thinking about finding a new home for its capital, inherited from Dutch colonisation. Brazil was going to do it with Brasilia. According to statistics, Jakarta currently has 432 classified hotels offering more than 56,500 rooms. Proof if any were needed that hoteliers still believe in its future: the city has 48 hotel projects in its pipeline, representing more than 9,000 rooms in the pipeline, according to Lodging Econometrics.

Jakarta: a luxurious Park Hyatt, awaiting a Mövenpick

These include 345 keys to 25hours Hotel The Oddbird will add a touch of lifestyle to the Accor group's already extensive offer in the Indonesian metropolis at the end of the year. As for next year, several developments have already been announced, including a DoubleTree by Hilton and a Mövenpick in the city centre, a brand that is also expected to open at the airport by 2026.

In the short term, Nusantara will no doubt struggle to establish itself as a business destination. But when will it become a real competitor to the current Indonesian capital? " I think it will take 10 to 15 years to achieve this." says David Daguise.
