The implementation of cross-border free-range airspace<\/strong> by the Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (MUAC) ofEurocontrol<\/strong><\/a> and German air traffic control DFS<\/strong> (Deutsche Flugsicherung) in Karlsruhe has since 30 November freed up capacity in the upper airspace of Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Germany<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Optimising millions of flights a year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The technical cooperation between these two air navigation service providers has made it possible to unlock thousands of new route options<\/strong>independently of the limits of existing airspace. It therefore considerably optimises routes, saves fuel and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some 1.5 million flights pass through the MUAC area every year.<\/strong>. This is the third busiest air traffic control facility in Europe in terms of traffic volume. For its part, thehe DFS ensures the safety and punctuality of more than three million flights<\/strong> in German airspace, up to 10,000 a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new direct route options concern routes over Germany and the Benelux countries. In concrete terms, the MUAC\/DFS unified airspace gives airlines planning options on long direct cross-border routes<\/strong>. This is the case, for example, between Ireland and Poland. Or between western France and Scandinavia<\/strong>. This means that flights can be completed in a single operation, without having to plan intermediate control points along the route in MUAC\/KUAC airspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also possible touse direct cross-border routes of varying lengths<\/strong>. This means optimising flight paths according to wind conditions and potential closed or congested airspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
