Let's start with a concern that may affect business travellers. With millions of spectators expected, would you advise them to avoid meetings and appointments in Paris, particularly at the start of the new academic year at the end of August/beginning of September?

Pierre Rabadan - This will obviously be a very busy period, with the hosting of the Paralympic Games. That said, I'd like to encourage everyone - conference delegates, event organisers and business travellers - to come to Paris and enjoy the exceptional festive atmosphere. A unique experience. This is all the more important given that, while the transport plan for the Olympic Games takes place at a time when business activity is slow, in the middle of summer, the plan for the Paralympics is based on a smaller number of spectators, around 4 million compared with more than 11 million for the Olympic Games, in addition to the traditional back-to-school crowds. So will it be necessary to limit travel? Those who can are encouraged to travel by teleworking in the first week of the new school year. But our aim is to be able to welcome spectators as well as those returning to their daily lives or business tourists. To this end, as for the Olympic Games, this period will benefit from a major increase in services, both in terms of equipment and personnel.

Transport is one of the great assets of Paris as a destination, but it's also a potential source of trouble. Anything can go very well during the Games, as well as generating a bad buzz around the destination in the event of a problem. This began with the announcement of the increase in the price of metro tickets.

Pierre Rabadan - I can confirm that I was surprised by this increase, as we learned of it from the press, given that we are one of the funders of Ile-de-France Mobilités. But let's not get into that debate... It's true that Paris has one of the best public transport networks in the world. The concept of the Games that we wanted to develop is based on this, by concentrating many of the events in the centre of Paris, outside the traditional sports venues. This requires a system that works optimally. We've been a little worried in recent months, with the service not always satisfactory on a day-to-day basis. But we'd rather worry before than during the Games. I can see the involvement of all the players. It's a long-term job, but we'll be there. And, above all, I hope that our efforts will make it possible to stabilise this transport service over the long term, well beyond the Games.

(c) Paris 2024 - Florian Hulleu

Before turning to the effect of the Olympics on Paris as a destination, I'd like to ask you a question about transport and the Paralympic Games. Will they result in really improved accessibility to venues and transport?

Pierre Rabadan - In an old city like Paris, this is a major challenge. We know full well that not all of the Paris metro will be accessible. Many stations have old structures that make the work long and difficult. But all the new stations, particularly those on line 14, as well as the renovations, will make the metro accessible. At the same time, the City of Paris has invested 13 million euros to increase the number of accessible bus stops from 53% to 70%. The number of taxis able to accommodate PRMs will also increase significantly. We are using this opportunity to move faster and more effectively on accessibility.

You recently succeeded a tourism professional, Jean-François Rial, as head of Paris je t'aime - Office de Tourisme, at the suggestion of the Mayor of Paris. Does this show the city's strong involvement in its tourism future?

Pierre Rabadan - If not a stronger involvement, it is at least proof of a major concern in a key year for Paris and its tourism. There is an indirect link between the challenges of 2024 and the positive impact that this world event could have in the years to come, both on traditional tourism and on business tourism. During the Games, Paris will have the capacity to demonstrate your expertise for hosting major events, but also to better showcase the diversity of what you can do and find in Paris. It was all of these things that led Jean-François Rial to ask me to succeed him, in agreement with Anne Hidalgo.

I'd like to encourage everyone - delegates, event organisers and business travellers alike - to come to Paris and enjoy the exceptional festive atmosphere.

2024 will undoubtedly be a banner year for Paris as a destination. What new message can the Games send out about the city, given that the French capital is already a firm favourite with both leisure and business tourists?

Pierre Rabadan - It's a city on the move, a city that's transforming itself in line with the necessary environmental changes. A city that wants to continue welcoming the world. It will do so in 2024, but it wants to continue to do so over the long term. The idea is to get the message across that we want to bring tourism to Paris and Greater Paris, by building on our strengths and improving what needs to be improved. That's what's at stake in 2024, but it's also a major challenge for the next 15 years.

(c) Paris 2024 - Florian Hulleu

(c) Paris 2024 - Florian Hulleu

What exactly are these areas for improvement?

Pierre Rabadan - Like all major tourist destinations, the pandemic has brought us to a major halt. We need to rekindle the momentum by adding new areas of improvement for the destination. This is the aim of the hospitality manifesto which the tourist office recently produced and which summarises the avenues for development. The Olympic and Paralympic Games will play a part in this, in particular by giving a major boost to accessibility and opening up a new approach to single-use plastic. We also want to offer a better visitor experience from the moment they arrive at the station or airport, and a better quality of welcome in shops and hotels. All of this is summarised in this manifesto so that we can capitalise on what we will be able to do in 2024 and extend it over the long term.

What effects do you expect from the implementation of this manifesto?

Pierre Rabadan - It was presented to members of the tourist office at the beginning of December. So first they have to get to grips with it before we can put it into practice. There will undoubtedly be difficulties in adapting, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses, which don't have the same capacity to evolve as quickly as very large groups. That's what we're going to be measuring over the coming months with Corinne Ménégaux and her teams, and if necessary providing the missing tools. I have no doubt that we will sometimes come up against resistance. I imagine that the phasing out single-use plastic which is being played out across the whole city will pose operational and logistical problems. We need to change the culture, including within the City. One example is the rugby world cup. The question arose as to what goodies we could offer to the village set up on the Place de la Concorde. I had thought of small souvenir rugby balls. But the people in charge of the single-use plastics issue talked me out of it. In line with our desire to develop skills, we found a local workshop that could transform old, recycled balls into key rings. If I hadn't had this support, we would have had traditional goodies, with all that that entails in terms of environmental impact.

The most sustainable MICE destinations surveyed by GDS-Index

This brings us to another important aspect of a destination's appeal today: its sustainability. According to the GDS-Index, Paris is one of the best performers in this area. What areas for improvement does the city intend to focus on?

Pierre Rabadan - With the Office, we're working on a number of things, not just getting rid of plastic, but also promoting local know-how and production. All these things are necessary to staying in high-performance cities at GDS-Index. We have all the fundamentals to attract tourists - a rich heritage, a highly developed cultural aspect - but there are other areas to improve so that the development of tourism does not come up against environmental issues. The provision of soft mobility is a very important issue for improving the flow of traffic in the city, for example for business tourists travelling between their point of arrival and their hotel or seminar venue. There is also a proximity between these places to work. More broadly, we are currently finalising the new version of the eco-responsible events charter, which will guide the hosting of Parisian events in the future and, from 2024, sporting events.

Canal Saint Martin.

The CDG Express will not arrive until after the Olympic Games, in 2027. Is this important for the City of Paris?

Pierre Rabadan - Anything that facilitates connections between the airport and the centre of Paris and improves the experience of tourists is important. The CDG Express will undoubtedly do that. It has taken a long time, and has led to a lot of discussion. The question has arisen of investing fully in an efficient RER B, with better capacity and above all fewer incidents on a daily basis, rather than developing the CDG Express. Now that the debate has taken place and the choices have been made, I think it's going to be very good. The cost of the journey will be high, €24 if I'm not mistaken, but with hopefully maximum efficiency. At the same time, line 14, whose extension between Orly airport and Saint-Denis Pleyel station will be completed for the Games, will also improve things and facilitate connections between stations and airports.

Corinne Menegaux (OT Paris): "A city with the same values".

The organisation of the Olympic Games demonstrates, if proof were needed, the French capital's ability to organise large-scale events. For a long time, Paris was ranked first in the ICCA rankings, but in 2023 it will be third. Is it our ambition to regain our position as the world's leading conference destination?

Pierre Rabadan - The city intends to chart a course that will boost business tourism and return the destination to its former glory. Which is to say at the top of the podiumTo draw a parallel with sport. However, our ambition is not just to regain first place, but above all to stay there for the long term.

What will be the legacy of the Olympic Games for tourism in general, and for business travellers and conference-goers in particular?

Pierre Rabadan - Accessibility is naturally one of them, as is the ability to maintain a high level of transport services on a daily basis. I'm also thinking of the transformation of the Porte de la Chapelle area and swimming in the Seine, with three sites planned for the summer of 2025. To make it easier to cycle between two Olympic venues, we are also going to set up guarded car parks, a solution that I hope will continue well into the future. As for business tourism, new locations will be used for tourism during the event. These are all tests which, if they prove to be conclusive, could give some of them the idea of developing the reception of groups, which they are not necessarily doing today.

Which of these places do you have in mind?

Pierre Rabadan - There are so many. Barges and boats on the banks of the Seine, hotels and large pavilions on the edge of the woods, new venues in Paris and even museums like the Palais Galliera, which is known as a museum but less as a venue, even though I think it is exceptional. All these venues are now available on our bienvenue2024.paris.fr platform or those operated by the Organising Committee via its marketing subsidiary On Location. These platforms are designed to showcase the diversity of Parisian culture and heritage. The challenge is to make the most of these places, which are not the best known, but which are of interesting quality and go beyond the postcard Paris experience.

Olympic Games, transport and accessibility, business tourism: Pierre Rabadan, President of Paris je t'aime, links the challenges of 2024 to the future of Paris tourism.

[101,147
39,1229
51

post-165153","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-meetings-et-evenements","category-decideurs","tag-paris","tag-mice","type-darticle-interview","vapo-free

Pierre Rabadan (Paris je t'aime) : "Continuer à accueillir le monde"

<meta property="og:title" content="P.
