{"id":166163,"date":"2024-01-18T07:14:09","date_gmt":"2024-01-18T06:14:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/?p=166163"},"modified":"2025-12-09T10:01:52","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T09:01:52","slug":"major-french-airports-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/major-french-airports-2023","title":{"rendered":"Traffic at major French airports nears 2019 levels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>France's major airports continued to recover in 2023<\/strong>According to the first figures published by the various hub managers in France, the number of passengers at airports in France has risen by more than 10% in recent years. However, some airports continue to post <strong>lower performance than in 2019<\/strong>. This is the case at <strong>Paris-CDG, Lyon and Toulouse<\/strong>. But others, such as <strong>Beauvais, Marseille, Nice and Paris-Orly have all managed to exceed their pre-Covid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First of all, the capital's airports. The first<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/aerien-francais-resultats-finances-2022-20230217.html\/\">ADP<\/a> <\/strong>reports that total traffic is flirting with the <strong>100 million passengers a year<\/strong>. The two Paris hubs of CDG and Orly recorded exactly 99.715 million passengers. The strikes that affected the airports on several occasions during the year meant that ADP missed the symbolic 100 million mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/flightright-retards-annulations-2023-20231226.html\/\" data-id=\"164607\">Delays, cancellations: French airports struggling in 2023<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CDG handled 67.42 million passengers, an increase of 17.3% compared with 2022.<\/strong>. But this result is still 11.5% below the total passenger figure for 2019. <strong>Orly recorded 32.29 million passengers, an increase of 10.6% compared with 2022.<\/strong>. However, the southern Paris hub exceeded its 2019 traffic target by 1.4%!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In detail, <strong>domestic traffic is the big loser in 2023<\/strong>. Passenger numbers are down by 2.6% compared with 2022. Traffic is down by a quarter since 2019. Two other segments remain weak compared with the pre-Covid period. Compared with 2019 traffic, the <strong>Other Europe\" segment<\/strong> (which includes Russia and Ukraine) is 35% lower and the <strong>Asia-Pacific segment<\/strong> of more than 31%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/air-france-orly-20231019.html\/\" data-id=\"160311\">What business does Air France currently have at Orly?<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>The markets close to or above their 2019 traffic levels are the European Union (98.7 % of the 2019 level), the French overseas departments and territories (99.0 % of 2019) and North America (100% of 2019). Last but not least, <strong>passenger traffic to Africa is now 8.5% higher than in 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet.., <strong>the big winner in the Paris metropolitan region remains Beauvais airport<\/strong>. The Picardy airport was indeed a \"hit\". According to figures from France's civil aviation authority, the DGAC, <strong>In the first 11 months of 2023, Beauvais exceeded its 2019 passenger numbers by more than 39%.<\/strong>. That's over 5.1 million passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/aeroport-beauvais-trafic-20230412.html\/\" data-id=\"146784\">Beauvais airport awaits new shareholders to think bigger<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-marseille-rayonne-dans-le-sud\">Marseille shines in the south<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside Paris, <strong>the airport with one of the strongest growth rates in France is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/transavia-lyon-marseille-dubai-20230620.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marseille<\/a><\/strong>. This confirms the airport's position as France's third-largest after Paris and Nice. By 2023, <strong>Marseille Provence (AMP) welcomed 10.8 million passengers<\/strong>. This is 18.1% more than in 2022, but above all an increase of 6.4 % compared with 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a record for the platform, which <strong>will inaugurate its completely transformed terminal 1 at the end of the first half of the year.<\/strong>. Just in time for the Olympic Games. In 2024, AMP is expecting a new traffic record. <strong>The airport should be linked to 128 destinations in 36 countries<\/strong> by 34 airlines. New routes include Stockholm, Antalya, Zagreb, Wroclaw in Poland, Amman and Limoges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nice<\/strong>France's leading regional airport, is equally optimistic. The airport has recovered 98% of its 2019 traffic, i.e. <strong>14.08 million passengers<\/strong> (see box).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image shrinkToFit\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/societe.nice.aeroport.fr\/presse-media\/adaptation-du-terminal-2\/45069-960804-1-69277f7ed900-banner-t2-extension2--hero.jpg\" alt=\"https:\/\/societe.nice.aeroport.fr\/presse-media\/adaptation-du-terminal-2\/45069-960804-1-69277f7ed900-banner-t2-extension2--hero.jpg\"\/><figcaption><em>An image of the future configuration of terminal 2 in Nice (Photo: Groupe A\u00e9roports de la C\u00f4te d'Azur)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bordeaux-lyon-et-toulouse-toujours-en-retrait-important-par-rapport-a-2019\">Bordeaux, Lyon and Toulouse still well down on 2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lyon-Saint Exup\u00e9ry, for its part, has seen a return to traffic of over 10 million passengers.<\/strong> last year. This represents an increase of 17% compared with 2022. However, attendance is still 15% below the record for 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Toulouse airport traffic expected to fluctuate between 7.8 and 8 million passengers<\/strong>20% will be lower than in 2019, while <strong>Bordeaux set to reach 7 million passengers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, Vinci's airports division revealed that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/turkish-airlines-nantes-20220815.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nantes <\/a>welcomed 6.535 million passengers last year<\/strong>. An increase of 13% compared with 2022 and a decrease of 9.6% compared with 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-highlight-box\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nice: the C\u00f4te d'Azur airports regain their place in the sun<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nice <\/strong>is also working to revive demand for business and leisure travel. And the C\u00f4te d'Azur hub's efforts seem to have borne fruit: the two terminals at <strong>Nice C\u00f4te d'Azur <\/strong>welcomed last year <strong>14.08 million passengers<\/strong> for commercial aviation. This represents a more than satisfactory recovery rate (98%) compared with the 2019 figures (14.35 million). Especially since, as the hub's managers note, these results are based on a decidedly lower number of commercial aircraft movements than in 2019: 107,404 compared with 110,866 before the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The catalogue of destinations linked to Nice airport has also been restored to its former glory. Last year there were <strong>116 destinations in 44 countries<\/strong>With 5 routes to North America and as many as 6 to the Gulf States, long-haul routes are increasingly represented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This resurgence in demand is not without consequences for the Nice-based platform, which has to prepare for the future. \" <em>With the return to a level of traffic equivalent to that of 2019, we were once again reminded of the need to adapt the sizing of our infrastructures during the seasonal traffic peaks last summer\", explains Franck Goldnadel. The Chairman of the Management Board of A\u00e9roports de la C\u00f4te d'Azur adds: \"We owe it to the agility and experience of our staff and partners that we were able to manage the volume of passengers without any deterioration in our quality of service. But this feat cannot be repeated indefinitely. <\/em>\"warns Franck Goldnadel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To prepare for the future, Nice airport has already begun work on adapting terminal 2, which next year will result in a <strong>new boarding lounge<\/strong>.
