{"id":167999,"date":"2024-02-08T12:14:42","date_gmt":"2024-02-08T11:14:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/?p=167999"},"modified":"2024-07-03T10:35:59","modified_gmt":"2024-07-03T08:35:59","slug":"austrian-railways-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/austrian-railways-project","title":{"rendered":"Austrian railways' 2040 project will transform Europe's railways"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/obb-paris-berlin-vienne-20231020.html\/\">Austrian railways<\/a> had already broken a record with almost <strong>467 million passengers<\/strong>. Of this total, 42 million passengers travelled on mainline services, including 14.7 million on international routes. By 2023, estimates point to more than 480 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the creation of new rail lines and the modernisation of the train fleet, new services have been and will be launched, such as the <strong>night trains<\/strong> or <strong>annual packages<\/strong>. One of the most spectacular of these was the \"Klimaticket\", an annual ticket for all transport in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-quote\"><blockquote><p>a rail network for a climate-neutral Austria, where climate protection and good mobility go hand in hand<\/p><cite>Leonore Gewessler, Minister for the Environment<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-plus-de-26-milliards-d-euros-d-investissements\">Over \u20ac26 billion of investment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\"\u00a0<em>The Target Network 2040 is our vision of what a modern railway system in Austria could look like. It is a rail network for a climate-neutral Austria, in which climate protection and good mobility go hand in hand.<\/em>\" said <strong>Leonore Gewessler, Minister for the Environment<\/strong>when the plan was presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2040+ plan is currently being discussed by government bodies, with the aim of submitting it to the public by the middle of the year. It is particularly ambitious, covering <strong>67 projects representing a total investment of \u20ac26 billion<\/strong>.  By 2040, <strong>passenger trains will cover a total of 255 million kilometres a year<\/strong>. Let <strong>40% more<\/strong> than today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The introduction of double-decker trains will also make it possible to<strong>increase transport capacity by 30%<\/strong> according to the \u00d6BB. In total, <strong>the purchase of trains and the digitalisation of systems will generate additional investment of \u20ac7 billion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-des-effets-positifs-jusqu-a-paris\">Positive effects as far away as Paris<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the flagship projects, which will have <strong>an impact on all European traffic<\/strong>is a <strong>a new rail link between the province of Upper Austria (Linz region) and Munich<\/strong>. Both the German and Austrian Federal Transport Ministries are working on doubling the number of lanes between this province and the Bavarian capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would enable <strong>reduce the journey time from Vienna to Munich from the current four hours to around two and a half in the future<\/strong>. From Linz to Munich, the journey would take around 1 hour 20 minutes. With the modernisation of the tracks between Munich, Stuttgart and the border with France, it would also make it possible to <strong>considerably shorten the journey time from Paris to Vienna<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Work in Germany on the high-speed project <strong>Stuttgart-Ulm (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/stuttgart-21-projet-du-siecle-20210902.html\/\">Stuttgart 21)<\/a> <\/strong>will cut 30 minutes off the journey between the two cities by <strong>2025<\/strong>. Another project in the pipeline between Ulm-Augsburg-Munich would cut the journey time by 40 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It would therefore eventually be possible to make the Paris-Vienna journey in eight hours.<\/strong>. This compares with an average of 10 hours for the current fastest route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another major project is the modernisation of the railway lines in the Bregenz region on Lake Constance. This modernisation will reduce journey times throughout the Rhine Valley.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Austria has specified its railway objectives in a plan called 2040+, which sets out the country's long-term strategy.
