{"id":172047,"date":"2024-04-12T10:56:57","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T08:56:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/?p=172047"},"modified":"2025-01-10T11:47:51","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T10:47:51","slug":"saf-sustainable-fuel-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/saf-sustainable-fuel-production","title":{"rendered":"SAF: supply in progress (slow)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Faced with the growing needs of airlines, the production of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) is gradually changing scale. Last year, as part of the Singapore Expansion Project, the world leader, Finland's Neste, increased the production capacity of its refinery to one million tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel, which is used to supply Singapore Airlines and flights departing from Singapore Changi airport. Also present at the San Francisco, Los Angeles, Amsterdam and Helsinki hubs, the company will increase its global production capacity to 2 million tonnes once the expansion of its Rotterdam refinery is completed in early 2026. This figure should be compared with the global needs estimated by IATA at 8 billion tonnes in 2025, but 450 billion tonnes in 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More recently, in January this year, DG Fuels unveiled plans for a plant in Saint James Parish, Louisiana, which is expected to have a capacity of 600,000 tonnes of SAF when it comes on stream at the end of 2028. <strong>A development in which Air France-KLM has played a part <\/strong>by investing 4.7 million dollars in DG Fuels last November, thereby supporting this promising operation while reserving 30,000 tonnes of its production per year for itself. \"\u00a0<em>This is the first time Air France-KLM has invested financially in an SAF producer and we look forward to strengthening our long-term partnership with DG Fuels.<\/em>\" said Constance Thio, Sustainable Development Director General of a group that had already secured a supply of 600,000 tonnes of SAF from DG Fuels over the period 2027-2036.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/air-france-klm-carburant-durable-20221025.html\/\" data-id=\"135253\">Air France-KLM announces its first orders for sustainable fuel<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>What's more, the plant, which is expected to cost $3.8 billion, could be a game-changer, according to the daily newspaper <em>Les Echos<\/em>. And it does so by resolving the main complaint against sustainable aviation fuels today: their cost to airlines. According to the details presented by the business daily, the SAF produced at Saint James Parish would be sold at <strong>at prices that are no longer two to four times higher<\/strong> than current fuel, but well below. Or even equivalent to jet fuel, if the subsidies that have been pouring into the sector across the Atlantic since the Inflation Reduction Act were to reduce the bill even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The originality of this plant lies in two points: firstly, the synthesis process used, Fisher-Tropsch, which allows much higher production, resulting in very low unit production costs and, consequently, competitive rates for companies. Secondly, the processed source is not, as is often the case, used cooking oil and animal fat waste, but rather <strong>biomass<\/strong>. DG Fuels is going to recover - for a cash consideration of 120 million dollars - the waste from local farmers to transform it into carbon monoxide, from which SAF will later be produced after combining with hydrogen and refining. In other words, more than 200,000 tonnes of sugar cane residue that would otherwise have been burnt is recycled, all without discharging into the Mississippi and using renewable energy sources, according to DG Fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/saf-heathrow-londres-investissements-20250110.html\/\" data-id=\"189255\">SAF: Heathrow goes from strength to strength<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/lanzajet-saf.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-172085\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/lanzajet-saf.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/lanzajet-saf-300x181-derived.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels plant, which opened in February.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The US Department of Energy (DoE) estimates that the country's forest and agricultural residues could generate nearly 65 billion litres of sustainable fuel, enough to replace 75 % of US aviation fuel consumption. Supporting the development of this waste conversion technology was therefore seen as \"an important step in the right direction\".\u00a0<em>a crucial step for the growth of the SAF industry<\/em>\u00a0\"Constance Thio, on the announcement of the Air France-KLM investment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the more so as DG Fuels intends to develop this concept elsewhere.<strong> Low-cost SAF<\/strong>The company has a dozen or so projects, notably involving forestry residues in Maine. In fact, Air France-KLM has already placed an option on 45,000 tonnes of the future plant's production, when it comes on stream in 2029. This will enable the Group to continue to boast that it is the world's biggest user of SAF, having consumed 17% of global production, compared with its 3% share of global paraffin consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/saf-carburant-aerien-acceleration-20220930.html\/\" data-id=\"132497\">FAS, the new green gold for airlines<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>With this project and many others, the United States is aiming to stay one step ahead in a production sector that is strategic for the future of air transport. American oil expertise is certainly not to blame, nor is the support of the American government through its <strong>SAF Grand Challenge<\/strong>. The Biden administration's objective, presented in 2021 as part of its Build Back Better programme, is to be able to supply more than 10 million kilolitres of SAF per year by 2030, before covering 100% of aviation needs by 2050. Hence the active support, through tax credits, for growth in supply and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, another player is planning to exploit biomass to produce SAF: Alder Renewables, the fruit of a public-private partnership involving Avfuel and Honeywell UOP, as well as Boeing and United Airlines. This will be based on a basic product, miscanthus, a herbaceous plant used as an animal feed supplement, fodder and biofuel. \"\u00a0<em>To develop SAF as quickly as necessary, we need to <strong>going beyond existing solutions<\/strong> and invest in research and development in new areas such as the one developed by Alder<\/em>\" United CEO Scott Kirby said when he announced a mega-supply contract in 2021, the largest ever signed, for the supply of nearly 7 million kilolitres of SAF to the American company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-le-miracle-de-l-alcool-change-en-saf\">The miracle of alcohol turned into FAS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>More recently, at the beginning of February, the LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels plant opened its doors in Soperton, Georgia, and claims to be the first in the world to convert alcohol - low-carbon ethanol - into SAF, producing almost 40 million litres a year. \"\u00a0<em>The transition to FAS will not only open up new markets for US producers of climate-smart products, but will also help US companies such as LanzaJet to capture the market in this emerging industry with high value potential.<\/em>\" said Tom Vilsack, US Secretary of Agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>United States, Europe, Asia: each of the continents of importance to air transport is arming itself to meet the need to decarbonise aviation. According to S&amp;P Global, contrary to popular belief, almost half of SAF's production capacity is now concentrated in the United States.<strong> not in the United States, but in Asia<\/strong>With 879 kilotonnes produced in 2023 - the Neste plant in Singapore plays a part in this figure - compared with 473 kt on the other side of the Atlantic and 433 kt in Europe, which is not so far behind. Moreover, S&amp;P analysts are forecasting a further increase in capacity in Asia in 2024, of more than a thousand kilotonnes, compared with 390 kt in Europe. Surprisingly, investment in the US seems to be lagging behind, despite tax incentives, with supply growth expected to account for just 74 kt this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/neste-emirates-schiphol.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-172087\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/neste-emirates-schiphol.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/neste-emirates-schiphol-300x200-derived.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>In November 2023, Neste teamed up with Emirates for the maiden flight of an Airbus A380 100 % powered by SAF.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>KPMG even sees Asia as a \"game changer\" for the SAF industry. Behind Singapore, which is driving the sector as a whole, a number of developments are underway, supported by both the introduction of incentive legislation and big names such as Petronas in Malaysia, Indian Oil Corp in India, Eneos Holdings, Fuji Oil, Mitsubishi and Sumitomo in Japan. Not to mention China, where until last year there was only one player, the Sinopec subsidiary Zhenhai Refining &amp; Chemical, which has been supplying Airbus at its Tianjin plant since 2022. But the country is likely to see others emerge very soon. In particular, Cathay Pacific has joined forces with one of China's largest energy companies, State Power Investment Corporation, to develop four plants with a production capacity of 50,000 to 100,000 tonnes of SAF per year by 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Europe is still a long way from Asia, S&amp;P expects to see its SAF production increase by the end of the decade. In line with the new objectives defined by the European Parliament vote last September, which raised the recommendations previously set by the<strong> ReFuelEU<\/strong>. As part of the \"Fit for 55\" package of actions, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% in 2050, the EU is now requiring increased use of sustainable aviation fuels, ranging from 2% to 70% in 2050, rising to 6 % in 2030 and 20 % in 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/spgci-food-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/spgci-food-.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-172091\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/spgci-food-.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/spgci-food--300x150-derived.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the developments expected on the continent, LanzaJet, British Airways and British cleantech Nova Pangaea Technologies are partners in the Speedbird project, which should give rise to a production plant in the UK by 2027, with a capacity of 100 million litres. And all this at a time when the UK government is set to announce incorporation mandates close to those defined by the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In France, the advent of a production sector is also eagerly awaited at a time when<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/macron-decarbonation-aerien-20230616.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emmanuel Macron assured the air transport industry of the State's support<\/a> in its necessary decarbonisation. \"\u00a0<em><strong>We'll be there in 2027-2030<\/strong><\/em>\" he said. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/totalenergies-carburant-durable-acceleration-20230619.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TotalEnergies<\/a> is obviously playing an active part in this transition, with the conversion of its Grandpuits refinery in Seine-et-Marne to sustainable energies, which should be able to produce 285,000 tonnes of SAF a year. Last February, on the occasion of the signing of a strategic partnership with Airbus covering half of the aircraft manufacturer's needs in Europe, Patrick Pouyann\u00e9, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, declared that his company had set itself, on a global scale, \"... a target of reducing its dependence on fossil fuels by 20% by 2020.\u00a0<em>the objective of producing 1.5 million tonnes per year of SAF by 2030<\/em>\" .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/carburant-durable-saf-france-20230216.html\/\" data-id=\"142875\">Sustainable fuels (SAF): France goes all out... with good intentions<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>Demand is also driving the emergence of new players such as the SME Elyse Energy, which is due to open in 2028 in the Lacq industrial basin near Pau. Like the DG Fuels project in the United States, its BioTJet plant is based on converting biomass, in this case forestry waste, into fuel, with 75,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel expected by 2028. For its part, Air France is also playing a leading role by supporting the parallel emergence of sustainable synthetic fuels, one with Engie and CMA-CGM as part of the KerEauzen project in Le Havre, and the other with EDF and Holcim, around its Saint-Pierre-La-Cour cement plant in Mayenne, through the Take Kair project. All of which will undoubtedly meet the FAS incorporation mandates set for 2030. Or even more?
