African air transport continues to grow, according to latest market study by consultant OAG<\/strong><\/a>. A positive situation despite the structural difficulties that persist on the continent<\/strong> such as regional conflicts (Burkina Faso, Democratic Congo, Ethiopia or Sudan, among others) or the absence of national companies, as in South Africa, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dynamics of North Africa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to IATA<\/strong>the international association of airlines, three of the four major regions of the continent<\/a> now have higher levels of air capacity than in summer 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Central and West Africa, capacity will increase by 11% between 2019 and 2024; in East Africa by 8.9% and in North Africa by more than 24%. The only fly in the ointment is Southern Africa. This part of the continent is still being negatively influenced by the development of air transport in South Africa. Seat capacity this summer is 23% lower than in summer 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the analysis of the consultant OAG, the current market offers a better match between capacity and demand, despite the absence of South African Airways and Madagascar Airlines<\/strong> on supra-regional and long-haul routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air capacity growth of over 24% in North Africa is one of the strongest recoveries in an IATA region since summer 2019<\/strong>. This growth has propelled the region to the top of the rankings, with a market share of 40% of the continent's total capacity. Its proximity to more mature markets such as Europe and the Middle East is boosting its growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

78% of North Africa's air capacity is thus directed towards the rest of the world, and 19% is intra-regional. The rest of Africa represents 3% of capacity in seats!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

East Africa is the region with the highest capacity outside the continent, after North Africa at 29.1%, followed by Central and West Africa at 19.7%. On the other hand, more than 77% of Southern Africa's capacity is concentrated on intra-regional traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Few African companies with a global footprint<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

OAG notes that Africa is still largely dominated by local airlines<\/strong>. This figure fluctuates between 45% in Central and West Africa and 74% in Southern Africa. In North Africa, local airlines have a market share of 52.1%, and 67.7% in East Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n

However, there are fluctuations from one market to another. For example, OAG indicates that East Africa is under the influence ofEthiopian Airlines<\/strong><\/a>. Nigeria accounts for 38% of the region's total capacity. Similarly, in Central and West Africa, a third of total capacity comes from Nigeria, although it is split between around ten companies...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the lack of direct flights to a number of African cities forces passengers to use hubs outside Africa. Paris, Brussels, Madrid and Lisbon play an obvious role, as does the Middle East with Emirates and Qatar Airways. The only airlines that can claim play a similar role in Africa are Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways<\/strong> and Royal Air Maroc<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Low-cost takes up residence in Africa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, OAG has identified new competition on the continent. Air transport low-cost<\/strong>. It's still emerging, but it's making rapid progress. For this summer of 2024, low-cost carriers account for 15% of seat capacity in Africa<\/strong>. A far cry from Western Europe (45%) or even the world's low-cost offer (34%). According to OAG, 90% of low-cost airline seats, however, are concentrated in North Africa<\/strong>. It remains anaemic on the rest of the continent: 0.7% in Central and West Africa, 1.5% in Southern Africa and 6.6% in East Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, very large capacity increases were recorded by Ryanair, Wizzair and Saudi carrier Flynas.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
