Last week, the German Federal Ministry of the Interior notified the European Commission of the introduction of land border controls with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark. for a period of six months<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This provision begins <\/strong>on 16 September 2024. It will result in temporary controls at all internal land borders<\/strong>. With the possibility of turning back certain people if they enter the country illegally. The measure is designed to curb irregular migration and provide better protection for internal security. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser explained: \" We are strengthening internal security through concrete action and continuing to take a hard line against illegal migration. We will continue to do so. Until we achieve strong protection of the EU's external borders through the new Common European Asylum System and other measures, this requires us to further strengthen controls at our national borders. <\/strong>These controls also enable effective refoulements - more than 30,000 since October 2023 alone at the land borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland. We are therefore going to extend our temporary controls to all German land borders.<\/em> \".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Checks on all forms of transport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The measure will therefore be extended from next Monday to the borders between Germany and its three French-speaking neighbours, Belgium, France and Luxembourg<\/strong>. These measures should primarily target travellers in private vehicles at land borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For train passengers -TGV and ICE between France and Germany- and on public transport, random police checks may be carried out<\/strong>. They have already begun on the tramway line between Strasbourg and Kehl. For several days now, police officers have been checking passengers as they get off the tram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German federal police will work closely with their colleagues in neighbouring countries. Cross-border police cooperation includes joint patrols. These temporary checks at internal borders last for six months, but can be extended for further periods. renewed if necessary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The temporary introduction of checks at the internal borders of the Schengen area is governed by the provisions of articles 25 et seq. of the Schengen Borders Code.
