{"id":186133,"date":"2024-11-26T10:10:02","date_gmt":"2024-11-26T09:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/?p=186133"},"modified":"2024-11-26T11:29:35","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T10:29:35","slug":"climatic-performance-companies-atmosfair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/climatic-performance-companies-atmosfair","title":{"rendered":"COP29 in Baku: airline climate performance rankings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Aviation is failing to meet the targets set out in the Paris Agreement on global warming, says German NGO Atmosfair <\/strong>at the United Nations Climate Change Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\" L<em>air traffic is almost back to pre-pandemic levels<\/em>said Dietrich Brockhagen, Managing Director of Atmosfair. <em><strong>Unfortunately, the airlines have further reduced their efforts, which were already low compared with the pre-pandemic decade.<\/strong>. They do not even manage to meet the ICAO's environmental protection objectives.<\/em> \".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/environnement-reservation-bcd-travel-20241023.html\/\" data-id=\"184059\">The environment, a major factor in flight booking criteria<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-l-inefficacite-des-politiques-de-reduction-des-emissions\">The ineffectiveness of emission reduction policies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the NGO, in 2023, the first year without Covid distortion, airlines will have improved their carbon efficiency by just under 6 % compared with 2019. That's <strong>an average annual increase of 1.4 %<\/strong> of this efficiency. But with the volume of air transport continuing to rise, <strong>Atmosfair indicates that the average annual target should be around 4 %<\/strong> to achieve the Paris climate targets and at least halt the rise in CO\u2082 emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The progress reported by airlines is not even in line with the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) objectives in terms of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/chaire-pegase-technologie-pedagogie-20230510.html\/\">energy efficiency<\/a>. Who recommends <strong>an annual increase of 2 % in CO\u2082 efficiency.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/saf-production-carburant-durable-20240412.html\/\" data-id=\"172047\">SAF: supply in progress (slow)<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, global aviation reached load factors in excess of 80 %, which is close to 2019 levels, but <strong>efforts to modernise the fleet and optimise airspace routes have been mediocre at best<\/strong>. What the NGO does not explain is the difficulty in deliveries of new aircraft by the two main aircraft manufacturers, Airbus and Boeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dietrich Brockhagen also criticises the fact that the airline index focuses on CO\u2082 efficiency - emissions per passenger\/km - rather than absolute emissions. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atmosfair.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/aai-methode-2015-en-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Atmosfair classifies airlines' climate performance into seven efficiency ratings (A to G)<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Atmosfair, <strong>no airline achieves an A rating<\/strong>the best index in terms of climate efficiency. Precisely because of this lack of large-scale fleet modernisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Only two airlines managed to reach B class, out of a total of 119 airlines.<\/strong>. Many major airlines are losing ground, with their rankings falling. This is particularly true of <strong>Delta Air Lines<\/strong>. It has risen from 45th to 87th place (F index). <strong>Lufthansa<\/strong> slipped from 66th to 97th place (F index) and <strong>Air China<\/strong> from 41st to 75th place (F index).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-des-resultats-mediocres-pour-les-transporteurs-europeens\">Mediocre results for European carriers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Europe, the airlines achieving the best performance in terms of climate efficiency are the charter carriers. <strong>TUI Airlines Nederland<\/strong> is rated B, TUI Airways and TUIfly are rated C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the major traditional companies, <strong>Iberia<\/strong> reached the C index, ranking twelfth. It is followed by<strong>Air Europa<\/strong>another Spanish scheduled carrier ranked 18th (index C).<strong> Transavia France<\/strong> is doing better than its parent company. The low-cost carrier ranks 22nd (C index) ahead of <strong>KLM<\/strong> in 38th position (index D) and <strong>Air France<\/strong> <strong>in 57th position<\/strong> (index E).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that <strong>British Airways and Swiss<\/strong> are doing even worse than Air France. The British carrier ranks 74th (E index) and Swiss 100th (F index).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On the low-cost side, the best performance by a European airline was awarded to Wizz Air, which achieved a B<\/strong>. While easyJet and Ryanair have a C rating.
