With, for special guest, Willie Walshthe President of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), who spoke at length about the main battle currently being waged by the sector: decarbonisation.

" The goal of "net zero emissions" by 2050 is essential and undoubtedly achievable, but it will be complex and costly for an industry whose margin is 3.6%." says the former CEO of the IAG Group, estimating a cost in excess of 4.5 trillion dollars over the coming decades. The cornerstone of this energy transition, with the prospect of reducing carbon emissions by 60% to 80%, sustainable air fuel (SAF) is still in the very early stages of production. " We need a significant acceleration. It will take time, and we will have to work together" stresses Willie Walsh. The President of IATA is calling on the energy companies to do their bit and on politicians to put pressure on them. Especially as the expansion of sustainable fuel will not only be useful for aviation, but also for road transport and the chemical industry, Willie Walsh pointing out that today, the sector receives no more than 8% of production. " We want our fair share" he pleaded.

Read also: SAF: Air France leads a lagging market

Alexander Rech, in charge of energy transition in aviation at TotalEnergies, was also a guest at the General Meeting, and stressed that the European RefuelEU initiative would drive robust demand. " Building on this expected growth will require a combined effortpartnerships to invest in production units" he said, seeing greater potential in the short term for converting and upgrading existing refineries, given that new technologies such as the Fischer Tropsch process and e-fuels - synthetic fuels - still have "a long way to go". a low level of maturity" .

Another key player in the sector, Airbus, is involved in the production of SAF through partnerships with producers. " While FAS will play the main role in decarbonising transport, fleet renewal will also have its part to play.says Bertrand de Lacombe, head of CSR regulations and external relations at the aircraft manufacturer, one of whose objectives is to produce aircraft that can be powered at 100% by SAF by the end of the decade, compared with 50% at present. Each generation is 20% more efficient in terms of energy consumption" . Hence the importance of the supply chain, given that Airbus has more than 8,000 orders in hand and expects to have to deliver 42,000 aircraft over the next 20 years. Willie Walsh is pessimistic on this point, seeing no return to normal. before five years" .

Still on the subject of decarbonisation, the President of IATA spoke out against the lack of political will to speed up the introduction of the single European skywhich is still long overdue. " A scandal" This would increase the number and safety of flights and reduce CO2 emissions by 10%. "This compares with the reduction in emissions if we stopped all flights under 500 km in Europe, which would result in a 24% reduction in flights and only a 3% reduction in CO2" .

Finally, and unsurprisingly, the likely tax on air travel in France gave Willie Walsh the opportunity for a few choice reflections. With a clear message: " Don't tax if you want to improve the environment. Even with this tax, planes will still be flying, with no impact on carbon emissions, but with fewer passengers, the richest of whom will still be flying." He spoke of a possible return to the state of air transport in the 70s and 80s, when aircraft load factors were around 65%, compared with around 85% today.

Although he came to Paris by TGV, the President of IATA also questioned a widespread idea about the carbon impact of travel: the alternative of rail to air. " It may exist in France or Spain, but not in Scandinavia and certainly not anywhere else in the world." he says. According to the President of IATA, the environmental cost of this mode of transport is not insignificant, given the CO2 for the construction of the lines or the consumption of electricity if it does not come from renewable or nuclear sources. " The train is not a simple solution, but a complex one" says Willie Walsh. And he concludes with an astonishment: " How can a country like France, leader in the aviation market with its fantastic airlines and key players such as Airbus, Dassault and Safran, convince the whole world to buy its aircraft while at the same time saying that we should take the train? ? "

Air traffic control: improvements on the horizon

No, French air traffic control is not the worst performer in Europe, according to Frédéric Guignier, Director of Air Navigation Services (DSNA). Accounting for 19% of delays in Europe, it is only "the fourth worst on average per flight" . Which still leaves plenty of room for improvement... As part of its Horizon 2030 strategy, the DSNA has embarked on an in-depth transformation to provide a better service through three areas of improvement: the management of meteorological events, the optimisation of air traffic control organisation and a number of flights hitherto limited by obsolete technology, far from European and world standards.

France is lagging far behind, deployment of the 4Flight control systemalready installed in Reims, Aix and Paris, will make it possible to handle a greater number of flights per controller. While it is obviously unthinkable to ban access to the big clouds in the French sky, the DSNA is also working on better coordination in the event of a deteriorated situation. In addition to recruitment, a recently concluded social agreement should also bring greater flexibility by next summer, with the possibility of concentrating forces at the height of traffic. In addition, and as part of the decarbonisation of air transport, the aim is also to increase the number of continuous descent flights, particularly to Orly.

Read also: Airline: a law to limit future disruption

There is one factor that business travellers are well aware of that can cause disruption: strikes. " Things have improved recently" says a delighted Damien Cazé, head of the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC). Led by Senator Vincent Capo-Canellas, the law aimed at better anticipating the scale of strikes, to be adopted at the end of 2023, will " has changed everything for us" underlines Damien Caze. From 2,200 cumulative days in 2023, this number has been reduced to 700 days in 2024 thanks to the ability to anticipate the number of strikers more accurately and, consequently, to reduce flight plans to a fair extent.

Decarbonisation, SAF, tax, air traffic control: the challenges facing air transport were the focus of discussions at BAR France's Annual General Meeting.
