According to the 15th edition of its barometer, unveiled in partnership with the IFTM trade show, the sector is not doing all that badly in a complex environment. There is good news, such as the end of double-digit price increases, and growth, albeit at a slower pace than in the past. soft "There were also some less positive factors, such as the political uncertainty in France and, more generally, an international context rocked by 61 conflicts. " Not seen since 1945 "according to Christophe Roth.

Against this backdrop, and despite this economic and geopolitical environment, the business travel industry set a new all-time record in 2025 after several years of post-COVID catch-up. Sales are estimated at €30.9 billion, higher than the €29.9 billion achieved in 2019. Growth is expected to reach 3.7 % in 2025, before a further rise to 2.2 % in 2026.

" We sense a kind of resiliencesays Clarisse Sounillac, Director of Global Customers at American Express GBT, who, along with other industry professionals, took part in the round table organised by ESPA at the IFTM trade fair. Companies are aware that business travel is necessary for their development. We are seeing signs of a slowdown, particularly in the hotel sector. "warns Christophe Roth. Hotels are undoubtedly the business travel sector where price hikes are no longer an issue. After growth of +30% over the last three years, " We've reached a threshold," says Ziad Minkara, CEO of S4BT, parent company of hotel reservation specialist CDS Groupe. Average prices remain high, but have stabilised and are no longer rising ".

According to CDS and its partner MKG, in certain cities such as Berlin, London and Geneva, the trend is even towards lower corporate rates, unlike the major cities of southern Europe such as Milan, Madrid and Lisbon, which are being driven by more buoyant economies. In his opinion, " The corporate segment is showing good resilience, with growth driven by Asia and South America, as well as North America. In this context, with regard to the company's relationships with its key accounts and their TMCs, NDC distribution continues to make inroads. " This is now a reality, with one million coupons per month coming from the NDC. All TMCs are committed to this process. While EPSA has noted an increase of 2.8% for the corporate segment in the first half of 2025, SNCF is forecasting growth of 1.5% over the same period. " While in recent years it has ranged from 5% to 7% "says Frédéric Miel, Director of Corporate Distribution and Travel Agencies for the SNCF Group.

Travel buyers looking to control their company's expenditure can expect some good news in the years to come. If the industrial timetable is adhered to, 2026 will see the introduction of TGV M trains, initially on the Paris-Lyon-Sud Est route, with the introduction of one new train set per month. These higher-capacity trains should have a positive effect on the offer, and therefore on prices. " Today, we don't have enough train sets to cope with the increase in demand. In addition to the policy of extending the lifespan of existing equipment, these new TGVs will provide a breath of fresh air, which should automatically ease the pressure on fares. "Frédéric Miel predicts.

This expanded offer is part of the overall growth of rail services in France. The opening up of the market to competition has seen the arrival of new entrants, both future ones such as Velvet (formerly Proxima), expected in 2028, and Uber, which is aiming to serve Paris-London by 2029, as well as existing entrants such as Renfe and, above all, Trenitalia. At the end of the year, the Italian company will be stepping up its services on the Paris-Lyon route, the busiest for business travellers, with 14 daily return trips. In addition to the launch of services to Marseille by the Italian airline last June.

Read also: Paris-Marseille: SNCF has already lowered its prices in the face of Trenitalia

" On these competitive routes, SNCF is experiencing the strongest growth. The Paris-Marseille line is setting records, both for us and our competitor. The system is becoming virtuoussays Frédéric Miel. This increase in competition changes everything, because we are no longer alone. This means we have to reinvent ourselves and focus more on the traveller. "

The SNCF's response is based on two pillars: firstly, prices that reflect the new reality of the market, as well as the budgetary constraints of business travel. Hence, in particular, the continued reduction in the price of the Liberté card, to make the SNCF "the most competitive travel operator in France". the first choice ". At the same time, this competitive pressure is leading to a move upmarket in the service, with the recently announced launch of the new Optimum classand even Optimum Plus on the Paris-Lyon route.

Consolidation galore

With this increased competition, rail is going against the grain of the travel industry, where consolidation is the order of the day. This is true of the airline industry, with ITA Airways joining the Lufthansa group, Air Europa being bought by Turkish Airlines and SAS being acquired by Air France-KLM, which also has its eye on Portuguese carrier TAP. " The challenge is to be more competitive, to be the right size in relation to the big American groups and the companies from the Middle East. "explains Vincent Audusseau. Synergies in costs and revenues, joint purchasing: this operational efficiency also means new destinations and more connecting opportunities for passengers.

But this consolidation movement is particularly evident in business travel, with two behemoths now forming a single entity, following the takeover of CWT by Amex GBT. " We are delighted to welcome CWT customerssays the Director of Global Customers at American Express GBT. They will be able to take advantage of the Group's tools and solutions, our services and the value of our portfolio. But it's still early to say more, as we're still in the discovery phase. ".

" This consolidation is necessary in order to meet customer needs, promote innovation and technological development, and so on.says Ziad Minkara. These two very fine agencies used to dominate the CAC 40. Today, BCD is competing with them. Other agencies, such as VoyageExpert and the Marietton group, have the capacity to meet the needs of SMEs and even large companies. ". The latter, parent company of Havas Voyages, Ailleurs and Bleu Voyages, has just announced the takeover of Supertripper, at around the same time as another example of the consolidation underway, the takeover of British TMC ATPI by Direct Travel. These could be superimposed on Navan's IPO, expected at the end of the year, with a valuation of 8 billion dollars. " This shows that the business travel sector is of interest to "Clarisse Sounillac is delighted.

CSR: a less visible but ever-present challenge

Has the current context relegated one major issue - CSR - to second place? No doubt. However, according to Clarisse Sounillac of Amex GBT, " CSR is on everyone's lips. But the level of maturity of companies varies from one industry to another. In pharmaceuticals, some companies have already been working on a CO2 budget for two or three years. While many companies are up to date in terms of reporting, because of their obligations, beyond that, raising travellers' awareness by displaying eco-responsible options in booking tools must continue. ".

Ziad Minkara estimates that a quarter of the bookings made through CDS Groupe's solutions concern " eco-labelled hotels ". In his opinion, this is the result of a change in behaviour through the implementation of tools, coupled with the efforts of hotels to obtain these certifications. The switch from air to rail, at least in France, is also continuing. " Companies are increasingly taking the train over long distances such as Paris-Toulouse or Paris-Montpellier, for journeys of three or even four hours. "says Frédéric Miel from SNCF.

Read also: Air France-KLM, test group for the European in-flight emissions label

But the airline industry is also making progress on this key issue for the future of the sector. Thanks to the deployment of the NDC, an airline like Air France has been able to introduce "SAF Bundles". In other words, a ticket at a negotiated price plus an option available via the booking tools to buy sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This solution is available to Airbus employees, particularly for flights from Toulouse to Paris and Montreal, but " others are customers in the pipe "says Vincent Audusseau. In addition to these "SAF bundles", there is also the "SAF Corporate" purchasing programme, offered to companies as part of the decarbonisation of their business travel. " This is an important lever that forms part of our commercial approach, which is not just focused on discounts. "says Vincent Audusseau. Together with the airlines, this will contribute to the emergence of a production sector that is slow to establish itself in response to the FAS incorporation obligations that will increase over the coming years.

The IFTM x EPSA barometer shows continued growth in business travel, framed by controlled price rises and a
