{"id":208689,"date":"2025-10-02T02:17:30","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T00:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/?p=208689"},"modified":"2025-10-02T09:30:28","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T07:30:28","slug":"disappearance-low-cost-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/disappearance-low-cost-play","title":{"rendered":"Brutal disappearance of low-cost carrier PLAY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another low-cost airline involved in transatlantic traffic via the<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/iceland-fire-earth-ice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Iceland<\/a><\/strong> finally threw in the towel. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/play-paris-cdg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PLAY<\/a>, <\/strong>based at the international airport of<strong> <\/strong>Keflavik,<strong> ceased trading on 30 September<\/strong> after announcing bankruptcy on 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the transatlantic market, PLAY aimed to compete with the majors and Icelandair with flights to <strong data-start=\"567\" data-end=\"641\">Boston, Baltimore\/Washington, New York (Stewart) and Toronto (Hamilton)<\/strong>. Like Icelandair, the aim was to<strong> connect these North American destinations with many European cities<\/strong> <strong>via the Keflav\u00edk hub (KEF)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These routes, which are exposed to strong competition, have proved to be fragile, in particular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/north-atlantic-europe-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>with falling demand from the United States<\/strong><\/a> this year. During the summer, the management had gradually closed its routes to the United States, announcing the suspension of its last service to Baltimore at the end of October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Europe, the company had refocused on scheduled and seasonal flights to leisure or \"holiday\" destinations.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/bleisure-the-best-of-both-worlds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bleisure<\/a>\u00a0\" as <strong data-start=\"1036\" data-end=\"1117\">Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga, Lisbon, Porto, Split, Antalya and Madeira<\/strong>. The aim was to reposition the network on more profitable routes in the short term. <strong>PLAY has operated a direct service from Paris CDG to Keflavik since July 2021.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, PLAY was working on its legal transformation. <strong>It wanted to set up an entity in Malta called \"Play Europe\".<\/strong>to facilitate its intra-European operations. And to offer flights on demand.
