A few months ago, US President Donald Trump wanted to rename the federal capital's main airport, Washington Dulles International, after Washington Donald Trump International Airport<\/a>While the new name is facing legal difficulties, the US president has, on the other hand, officially kicked off a major overhaul of the airport platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The administration Trump<\/strong> has thus unveiled the modernisation project for Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), presented as one of the largest airport investment programmes ever launched in the United States. With a budget exceeding 20 billion dollars, the project is set to transform the main international gateway of the US capital over the coming decade. The project is jointly spearheaded by the Department of Transportation (USDOT), the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority<\/a> (MWAA) and United Airlines, the hub's leading carrier.<\/p>\n

For a grandiose project, a grandiose announcement: it was at the White House that the project was unveiled by US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, alongside President Donald Trump in person.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nearly 500,000 m\u00b2 modernised<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The programme provides for the creation or renovation of approximately 465,000 m\u00b2 of passenger spaces.<\/p>\n

Among the main points of (re)construction are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • the construction of new car parks located in the immediate vicinity of the terminal;<\/li>\n
  • completely redesigned check-in areas;<\/li>\n
  • modernised security checks to streamline passenger journeys;<\/li>\n
  • the replacement of the current terminals C and D, deemed obsolete, by new concourses capable of accommodating more large-capacity aircraft;<\/li>\n
  • the addition of numerous boarding gates and workspaces for travellers;<\/li>\n
  • the expansion of the AeroTrain network, with new underground links to eliminate the famous \"mobile lounges\", those vehicles that still transport passengers between the main terminal and the satellites.<\/li>\n
  • Eero Saarinen's iconic terminal, with its very sixties look, will be preserved, but integrated into a new structure.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The project also includes a new, walkable US customs facility, a state-of-the-art automated baggage handling system and a significantly enhanced retail offering.<\/p>\n

    An increase in the power of the United hub<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    United Airlines, a stakeholder in the project, notably plans to expand its United Club lounges and open one of the world's largest United Polaris lounges at Dulles, with the aim of elevating the airport to the status of a primary hub for its East Coast network.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    The group believes that the new complex will make it possible to accommodate hundreds of additional flights, open up new international destinations and strengthen Washington's competitiveness compared to major North American hubs such as Atlanta, New York JFK or Chicago O'Hare.<\/p>\n

    According to the Department of Transportation, the project is expected to generate several billion dollars in economic benefits for the Washington region.<\/p>\n

    The project relies on the modernisation master plan developed over several years by the MWAA. In December 2025, the Department of Transportation had launched a call for projects aimed at architects, engineers and developers in order to accelerate this transformation. More than thirty proposals were examined before the selection of the current consortium.<\/p>\n

    The work will be carried out in phases in order to maintain airport operations for the entire duration of the project.<\/p>\n

    An initial phase is already underway with the opening, scheduled for before the end of the year, of part of the future Concourse E. This will offer fourteen new boarding gates for United Airlines, direct access to the AeroTrain as well as new passenger lounges.<\/p>\n

    With this budget soaring to over 20 billion dollars, Washington Dulles intends to become the premier showcase for American air travel. It remains to be seen whether, when the works are completed, travellers will still land at Washington Dulles\u2026 or at Washington Donald J.
