I'm impatient by nature... I don't like staying in the same place, doing the same thing twice. I travel a lot; it's part of my life and part of my job, which for me are inseparable.<\/p>\n
When I was at university in Paris, I travelled around Europe by car. I went from town to town, visiting museums, going to artists' houses, meeting people... I have memories of long drives, especially in Northern Europe, Holland, Denmark and Germany, of course, where I became an art specialist. I remember my first trip to Berlin, during the Communist era. The motorway was a corridor lined with checkpoints: I still have a very strong feeling of oppression; what happened was an absolute misfortune for Germany, for our country, for Europe as a whole; the 'Iron Curtain' was a huge attack on our common culture... These trips were very important for me. Today, I no longer have the time...<\/p>\n
I've become a regular on the TGV! For seventeen years, I was director of the Grenoble museum and a professor at the Ecole du Louvre, then at the Sorbonne in Paris: every week, I commuted between the two cities. At the time, they forgot to keep us informed, in case of delays, for example... I think that's changed now.<\/p>\n
In the hotels where I stay, I have certain requirements: to be made to feel at least a little welcome, to have a room that is neither uncomfortable nor noisy... I often have disappointments... a shower handle that stays in my hand, a bathtub that refuses to empty, a smoking room when I don't smoke! I'll admit it, I'm a stickler for cleanliness, detail and design... Contemporary architecture too! And I love photography. I've been photographing architecture, in black and white, but also the urban landscape, for some forty years. Whenever I go on a trip, even a very short one, I always set aside some time to discover a new building. In Japan, where I've been going a lot for a long time, I'm particularly impressed by the architecture...<\/p>\n
There are certain cities that inspire me: in the United States, Chicago, San Francisco... New York especially, with its sublime architecture in one of the most beautiful places in the world! The presence of a river, of water, in a city is essential... Look at Shanghai, with its huge expanse, the diversity of its districts, with Pudong, that fabulous modern district on the banks of the Huangpu River! Hong Kong is also exceptional. And Dubrovnik, on the Adriatic... I'd like that to be one of my next destinations... Unfortunately, I have nothing to do there professionally. The Middle Ages are not the right period for the Mus\u00e9e d'Orsay!<\/p>\n
