My favourite destination will seem very strange to you: it's Paris... After all, what could be more divine than to be on holiday in this city? You realise that you know little or nothing about the capital. Doing nothing is absolutely delicious! Deep down, I don't like to travel; even though filming forces me to do so two or three times a year... Elsewhere, I always feel cut off from my roots. I'm afraid of not arriving at the right destination, of not understanding anything because of the language, of getting lost...<\/p>\n
That's what happened to me when I discovered the Asian continent, and Thailand in particular. It was a real culture shock for me... This part of the world is a strange mixture, between something extremely polished, very refined - I'm thinking of the gastronomy, the architecture, the sense of welcome - and something else, less visible no doubt, but very brutal. Because there's also this sex, all this prostitution, especially child prostitution, which I...<\/p>\n
In Chiang Mai, in the north of the country, I stayed in an absolutely magnificent hotel: the Four Seasons, a splendour created by an Australian architect and landscape designer. He designed small bungalows on stilts and a few larger villas, conceived as private mansions, with private swimming pools. It's all very tasteful... the kind of total luxury that I appreciate, where nothing is ostentatious. There's a real quality there, a real gentle way of life...<\/p>\n
More ordinarily, I demand space when I stay in a hotel. The view, too: I get up very early and the windows of my rooms look out over the Grand-Place in Brussels: I was there with a lover and we couldn't stop looking at the square, lit up, deserted, covered in snow...<\/p>\n
And then there's the train; I love that! For me, it's my childhood. When I was little, to get the impression that I was driving the train, I'd lean out of the window towards the locomotive, which was still steam-powered... and I'd end up as dark as the drivers! I also liked to follow the electric wires with my eyes: from pole to pole, they seemed to accompany the train. It was as if they were dancing to the rhythm of the journey...<\/p>\n
But travel is an exception for me. As a general rule, I'm convinced that \"to live is to choose\", and I never abandon this idea... except when it comes to travelling! It's strange, but for over fifty years I've been unable to pack a suitcase. I always take a trunk with me; even when I'm gone for forty-eight hours, I can't leave light! And do you really have to leave to travel? For me, travelling means being able to create the world by imagining it... in the morning, and I want to be able to enjoy it for an hour or two; in the evening and at night too, for that matter. I remember one Christmas night in a hotel with windows.<\/p>\n
