There was a project for a joint World Expo with Budapest, which was quickly abandoned. But a new project, combining an economic zone with a residential area, has taken over. It has to be said that this area is very easy to get to from the historic city centre: thanks to the metro, Saint Stephen's Cathedral is less than eight minutes away! But above all, the emergence of Vienna Donau-City is a logical consequence of the new economic opportunities that opened up for the city in the 1990s. With the fall of the Iron Curtain, we're no longer at the bottom of the cul-de-sac, but at the centre of everything. This is even truer since the eastward enlargement of the European Union.<\/p>\n<h2>What does the birth of this new district mean for organisers of meetings and events in Vienna?<\/h2>\n<p>C. M. - Alongside the Austria Center, Donau-City already boasts two event venues (Wolke 19 and Wolke 21) located at the top of skyscrapers with, as you might imagine, incomparable views of the Danube and Vienna. Today sees the start of construction of a new, particularly flexible and modern event venue called the Palladium. New meeting spaces are also planned for the Kaiserwasser Arcotel, Vienna DC's future hotel, which will be the only establishment in the city with a beach.<\/p>\n<h2>Has the city launched any other projects in the convention and meeting sector?<\/h2>\n<p>C. M. - The work around the Vienna Exhibition Centre was completed two years ago. Right now, the Prater district is undergoing a major overhaul, with the organisation of the European Football Championship scheduled for 2008. We are also opening seven new hotels this year, mainly three- and four-star, although there are several five-star projects.
