Like every weekend, the ritual is unchanging. From the districts of Krakovo and Trnovo, or from Miklosiceva Street with its Art Nouveau facades, the crowds inevitably converge on the right bank of the Ljubanica, the river that winds its way through the Slovenian capital. Everyone knows everyone under the colonnades of the covered market. At least, that's the impression you get from the informal exchanges. It's easy to chat to the locals in perfect English, while enjoying a piece of prsut, the dried ham from the Karst region. There's a recurring refrain in the course of the conversations: that of the \"small country\", the \"small capital on a human scale\". You think you detect a latent inferiority complex, but then you quickly realise, if you dig a little deeper - if possible with a glass of Teran, a powerful, heady wine - that this way of life, almost village life, is in fact a source of real pride. A feeling that is all the more pronounced among Slovenes because it has been forged over the centuries, against all external domination. And God knows there have been many: the Republic of Venice, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Yugoslavia... \"In a small church, a small saint is great\", warns the Slovenian proverb, setting the scene for a tour of one of the smallest republics in the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/fotor0513175015-2.png\" alt=\"With its Art Nouveau accents, such as the geometric fa\u00e7ade of the Cooperative Bank on rue Miklosiceva (1); the elegance of Place Preseren and its late 19th-century bourgeois houses (2); and the racy allure of the Lipizzaners (3) cherished by the Habsburgs, Ljubljana is a capital on a human scale, with a seductive Mitteleuropa air.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-petite-mais-aristocratique\">Small but aristocratic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From the central market - and from just about anywhere else in the city for that matter - the eye is inevitably drawn to Ljubljana Castle. This monumental medieval landmark dominates the city, reminding us of its not-so-distant past, that of the Austrian court. Today, you can climb up to the castle by funicular railway, and imagine the parties given by the Habsburgs, who were not known for sparing on pomp and circumstance, evenings washed down with a host of Slovenian wines. After all, Slovenia is still home to the oldest vine in the world, the Maribor stara trta, which is four hundred years old. But we digress...<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During their nearly six centuries of domination, the Habsburgs made only a few brief appearances in this small aristocratic town. What remains of this emblematic castle, successively converted into a prison and garrison, is above all the chapel of St George, relatively unscathed by the terrible earthquake of 1511. There is also the sublime panorama, which we hope will last forever. Today, with its modern spaces enclosed by restored walls and its two renowned restaurants, Na Gradu and Strelec, the interior of the fortress is dedicated to tourism and MICE (Meetings, Incentive, Convention, Events). A must for an original meeting or a cosy gala dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in the centre, you can't miss the town hall, a Gothic building that becomes Baroque as it rises. Pushing open the door, the inner courtyard reveals another reminder of Austrian domination. A two-headed eagle carved into the rock sits enthroned there, a reminder, if one were needed, of the long period of Habsburg domination. A domination briefly interrupted by the Napoleonic interlude, to which the Slovenes still pay homage. Erected in 1929 on the Place de la R\u00e9volution Fran\u00e7aise, the column of Illyria, the province united by Napoleon, is a reminder of the time when Slovene was taught at school for the first time, marking the awakening of national consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet, despite these centuries of allegiance, one local artist has done more to shape the current skyline of the Slovenian capital than its successive occupants. He was Joze Plecnik, an iconoclastic genius who was so prolific that he radically changed the face of Ljubljana from the 1920s onwards. Now internationally recognised, the local boy has left behind a monumental, unclassifiable and ultimately indisputable body of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-varenne-link-block\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/slovenie-transporteur-national-20230525.html\/\" data-id=\"149313\">Slovenia: desperate for a national airline<\/a><\/p><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-art-genial-de-la-recup\">The genius of recycling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the foot of the colonnades of the market, where the whole of Ljubljana swarms, you can see the influence of antiquity on the work of Plecnik, who also designed the Triple Bridge, the Cobblers' Bridge and even the bishop's pulpit in St Nicholas' Cathedral. A tireless builder, Plecnik never failed to combine the aesthetic with the practical, relying in particular on the recovery of old statues or blocks of stone. In short, anything and everything, which he stored in his garden for future use. The Plecnik Tour is one of the main ways in which foreign visitors can discover Ljubljana's architectural wealth. \"We often organise a themed tour lasting an hour or more, in the form of a quiz. This makes it easier for the group to interact with the locals,\" explains Philippe Raquin, Project Manager at Intours. And that's where the charm of this small capital lies. In just one day, an incentive group can walk around the city and discover centuries of history. Afterwards, in the evening, it will be all the more pleasant to discover the local gastronomy by sampling, for example, one of the many Slovenian dishes - the fish and truffles are to die for - accompanied by a glass of Malvazija or Rebula - also to die for - two white wines produced in the Gori\u0161ka brda region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then it's time to head for the Adriatic coast, less than an hour and a half's drive away. Depending on your schedule, you can stop off at another of the legacies of the Austrian centuries. Two kilometres from the Italian border, the Lipica stud farm welcomes groups from all over the world all year round, attracted by its elegant white horses, the famous Lipizzaners. These are the same horses that Sissi rode after Emperor Franz Joseph gave two of them to the cavalier Empress. Lipizzaners are closely linked to the Habsburg family. In fact, it was Archduke Charles II who decided in 1580 to establish a stud farm on the \"petit tilleul\" estate. Convinced by the reputation of the horses of the Karst plateau, renowned for their strength and longevity, he set about crossing them with Italian, Arab and Spanish horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After two centuries of evolution, and under the guidance of the famous Spanish school in Vienna, a beast of stage and dressage was born that is applauded all year round by international groups. The stud's 311 hectares also provide a unique playground for outdoor activities involving these prestigious white horses, whose lineage has been closely monitored for centuries. \"The protected status of the stud limits the number of horses available to large groups, but the range of activities is rich at Lipica. We often organise the inevitable carriage ride, as well as bike rides and picnics in the countryside, in addition to the dressage show, which can be privatised for larger budgets,\" says Philippe Raquin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scenery changes a few kilometres further south on the way to Piran. Olive trees have replaced fir trees, and the sea has replaced the mountains. A change of heritage too, as the town bears the stamp of the Republic of Venice, which dominated the town for five centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-piran-la-serenissime\">Piran the Serenissima<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Welcome to Piran\" announces a sign in Slovene and Italian, the two official languages of Istria. If you turn towards the sea, as the little port town does, you can sometimes make out the silhouette of Venice on the horizon, nestling between the Croatian coastline on the left and the snow-capped peaks of the Dolomites on the right. Of course, the three-hour catamaran trip to the City of the Doges is one of the activities on offer to incentive groups. But the real proximity is historical and cultural. You'll quickly realise this in Piazza Tartini, the heart of Piran, where the town hall still proudly displays the winged lion of Saint Mark. Also in this square, dedicated to the Italian composer who wrote the Devil's Trillium Sonata, stands the aptly-named \"Venetian House\", tinted red ochre. Higher up, at the end of the narrow streets, stands a bell tower, a replica of the one in Piazza San Marco. Groups will prefer the Hotel Piran, with its private terrace overlooking the Adriatic, and the Tartini Theatre, with its 267-seat capacity for larger events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pleasant though it is, the pedestrianised city nevertheless shows its limitations in terms of infrastructure and activities in the events segment. As a result, the vast majority of incentive groups tend to head for Portoroz, the neighbouring seaside resort whose hotel facilities offer more options for organisers. Less bucolic, more concrete, the 'port of roses' nevertheless borders the Secovlje nature park and its salt flats. This major component of Istria's history, exploited by the Republic of Venice, still contributes to the reputation of the coast today. But Portoroz has built its reputation on its casino and nightlife, which has attracted the international jet set since the end of the 19th century. And it's no coincidence that this attraction coincided with the inauguration of the town's landmark building: the Palace Hotel, better known today as the German Kempinski. Inaugurated in 1910, just a few years before the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the building still embodies a certain idea of timeless luxury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can you fail to be dazzled by the Crystal Hall, the hotel's centrepiece, where you can imagine a prestigious event under Swarovski chandeliers? Why not laze amid the wisps of cigar smoke in the smoking room adjoining the 'men's lounge', thinking of the prestigious guests welcomed by the hotel? Sophia Loren, of course, who gave her name to the Sophia restaurant, and her partner in crime Marcello Mastroianni. Orson Welles and Yul Brynner also feature in the Palace Hotel's credits, as does, albeit in a different style, Marshal Tito, in whose honour the presidential suite was named. This heritage is both prestigious and demanding for Kempinski, who must preserve the building's architectural wealth - Art Nouveau, Viennese Secession, Art Deco, Bauhaus - while guaranteeing the standards expected by international event organisers. Mission accomplished, as the palace has remained at the top of the bill more than a century after its inauguration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"We're banking on the diversity of Slovenia's landscapes. You can spend the morning by the sea and the afternoon in the mountains. In winter, there are many possibilities for incentive activities,\" emphasises Philippe Raquin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bled-charmante-carte-postale\">Bled, a charming postcard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After this seaside holiday, we head north to immerse ourselves in a completely different setting. Make way for Bled, the ideal postcard to round off your Slovenian tour, or even start it if you're going backwards. Half an hour from Ljubljana airport lies one of the region's most sought-after treasures. The picture is famous: a small church on a tiny island set in the middle of a vast lake. All around, the Julian Alps. And further away, the Austrian border. The scene is worth the diversions, if only for the unique turquoise colour of the water. \"This lake is far too beautiful for a murder to take place here\", a certain Agatha Christie is said to have said during her stay at the Hotel Bellevue...<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hiking trails, rivers and caves that dot the Triglav National Park offer playgrounds for more or less extreme sports - kayaking, rafting, cycling - depending on the season and the profile of each group. In 2011, Lake Bled even served as the backdrop for the world rowing championships, and the first ski slopes are just around the corner. This variety of activities is well served by ad hoc hotel and meeting infrastructures, which also have experience of major events. The most courageous can even tackle Triglav, the three-headed mountain that is the pride of the Slovenian people, so much so that it features on the national flag. Legend even has it that every claimant to Slovenian nationality must climb the 2,864 metres of the highest local peak.
