For decades, the model airport had to offer high efficiency on the ground, with smooth check-in and security checks, as well as a vast choice of shops. 25 years ago, Amsterdam, Singapore and Zurich were the benchmarks in this respect. On the plastic side, however, there has been nothing breathtaking... since, a real sense of aesthetics<\/strong> This new generation is represented by Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur in Asia, the United Airlines terminal in Chicago and the international terminal in San Francisco, terminal 5 at London Heathrow, terminal 4 at Madrid Barajas and Oslo Gardermoen airport.<\/p>\n

What are today's hubs that offer the ideal combination of comfort and beauty<\/strong> ? In Asia, Singapore is certainly the best of its kind, with its gardens and swimming pools. And Hong Kong and Seoul are also unmissable for their a wealth of shops, services and relaxation areas<\/strong>. But the two terminals at Kuala Lumpur - including the new KLIA2 reserved for low-cost travellers - and those at Bangkok and Nagoya Centrair in Japan are also making their mark, and can rival each other for comfort.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the Gulf States, the Doha's new Hamad International airport<\/strong> has recently eclipsed that of Dubai, which while still a very beautiful airport, is much harder for passengers to get to grips with because of its gigantic size. Compact, luxurious and extremely efficient, the Qatari hub has become a real benchmark.<\/p>\n

In Europe, the new generation of airports has created elegant, tightly-packed hubs that are also popular for their atmosphere <\/strong>like Vienna Schwechat, with its Viennese caf\u00e9s so reminiscent of the Austrian metropolis. Copenhagen, Helsinki and Oslo, for their part, combine the warmth of Scandinavia with perfect efficiency. In these terminals, the purest Scandinavian design blends perfectly with the non-stop flow of passengers. \u00a0<\/p>\n

At Paris-CDG, the reference name is the E terminal<\/strong>including pier S4. The latest addition to the Air France hub, this pier combines elegance and rationality<\/strong> offering a wide choice of very Parisian shops. Not forgetting a museum area, green walls and even a small outdoor garden open to smokers. A true concentrate of French art de vivre.<\/p>\n

Art takes to the air<\/h2>\n

Air terminals are meant to be places of life, and art is now part of their daily routine. Australian terminals were among the first to embrace this idea, showcasing Aboriginal art in particular. But the trend is global. In the United States, one of the finest collections can be found in Seattle, and is even the subject of a catalogue. In Asia, passengers are greeted in Bangkok by giant statues, Singapore exhibits kinetic sculptures, and Bombay is a veritable museum with around a hundred works from the private collection of the platform's CEO. Europe is also part of this movement. Athens exhibits archaeological finds, Copenhagen scatters works here and there, while Amsterdam and Paris CDG have their own museums. \u00a0<\/p>\n
