California State Route 1: A breath of sea air<\/strong><\/p>\n

When you arrive at Half Moon Bay, a pretty cliffside town not far from Redwood City, the temptation is great to continue south along the mythical Route 1, which runs along the Pacific to Los Angeles. The scenery is breathtaking in its beauty and mystery, often shrouded in mist in the morning. The coast, covered in sparse, colourful vegetation, is entirely wild and protected. Not a single house for dozens of kilometres, but a succession of unspoilt beaches and rocks plunging into the ocean. The best place to take a walk is Pescadero, around thirty kilometres away, near Pigeon Point Lighthouse, a listed lighthouse. From here you can see sea lions, birds of prey and albatrosses up close. The splendour of the scenery will tempt many to go as far as Santa Cruz, or even Carmel-by-the-Sea, the chic, slightly old-fashioned seaside resort where Clint Eastwood was once mayor. Further south is Big Sur, lovingly described by Henry Miller, then San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara before Los Angeles. But that's another journey altogether.<\/p>\n
