Or almost! Because apart from his Santiags and Stetson, no doubt there to emphasise the unusual nature of the costume, he's just as the Good Lord made him: naked as a worm, except for a thong three sizes down... The scene is not, as you might think, within the walls of some cabaret in some big city in the world, but in the middle of the street, in Las Vegas, USA... And every late afternoon, it is repeated on Fremont Street Experience, in Downtown Las Vegas, in other words historic Vegas; the place where, in the 1930s, but especially after the war, the legend of the most hallucinated and hallucinatory city in America was born.
And he's not alone, this cowboy who seems to have lost everything gambling-wise. Ten metres away, next to an ageing Elvis and a magician who makes playing cards fly away, hip-hop dancers and little women from Paris, each more real than life, are contorting their bodies. With feathers, rhinestones, fishnet stockings and high heels... Their job? To be photographed for a few dollars in the company of tourists on the prowl, the women rather with the cowboy, the men rather with the little women. It's funny, good-natured, public-spirited, in a word, American... And if that's all there was to it!

Night and day, on the congested Strip, seven-metre-long Lincoln limousines, taxis queuing up and luxury cars with blinded windows follow one another...

Every evening, the Fremont Street Experience, which the authorities, aware of the playful potential of the old town, have covered over 400 metres with a canopy illuminated by 12.5 million bulbs, relies on a deluge of sounds and lights. Oh, the neon lights! Oh, the decibels! It's the prelude to a night that could be described as one of the seven deadly sins. Vintage casinos dripping with light, including the famous Golden Nugget, founded in 1946 and later remodelled by Steve Wynn, violently sonorous souvenir shops, open-air show stages; restaurants too, packed with humour, including one, the Heart Attack Grill, which offers 9,982-calorie hamburgers, guaranteed by the Guinness Book of Records to be the most calorific in the world. They're served, understandably, by waitresses in nurse's uniforms... The whole thing is wrapped up in a gift-wrapping of fire sirens and overlooked by a fantastic zip-line from which young men and women take off in a flight that mimics Superman; high, very high up there.

This is Sin City! This is the historic Las Vegas, the origin of the true city of sin as America has nicknamed it. Business tourism groups play the game and, between a few giga cones of popcorn and other sodas, hold photo contests with the most amusing street figures. Of course, the cowboy and cabaret dancers are a big hit.

However, Downtown is not to be outdone during the day, offering, to the south of Fremont Street Experience, an ultra-trendy and much quieter district in the making; a city that almost resembles a normal town. With an Arts District populated by artists in residence, antique dealers, mini-markets and restaurants for bobos - it's very trendy - and nightclubs where young locals come to dance. A sign of the times, and above all a sign of the new direction Vegas is taking, three or four blocks away there are also museums, including the Neon Museum, which presents some 160 unrestored historic casino, motel and restaurant signs to the public in the open air. At first glance, you're surprised by the bric-a-brac aspect of the place, with everything laid out on the floor, and the light bulbs that used to grace the nights of yesteryear having all but disappeared. But that's all right! The specialist guide's talk - provided you have a very good level of English and some knowledge of the city's history - is there to enliven all these full and loose lines, this sublime calligraphy that created the "art of neon" at the same time as it wrote the legend of the city. As a result, we end up with a jumble of signs from the 30s, 50s and 80s: El Cortez, Le Lido de Paris, Golden Nugget's or Sassy Sally's... but also things like "snacks, cold drinks, free aspirin" or teasing Betty Boop.

That's for the glitz. Because the dark side of the city, the money, the mafia... you'll find it a ten-minute walk away at the MOB Museum, a unique institution in the world that traces the history of organised crime. The action takes place inside the beautiful old Vegas courthouse, on three remarkably scenic floors. Everything is explained, dissected and reconstructed, from the emergence of the mafia in the United States to its development in Las Vegas, including the methods used by the FBI to combat it. Photos, videos, installations, machine guns, an electric chair, a courtroom, famous names such as Al Capone or Lucky Luciano and others less so; an atmosphere of speakeasies, the clandestine gambling dens that were the heyday of Prohibition and where people seemed to have a lot of fun. Boxing, gambling, racing, casinos, big names in show business and heaps of dollars, it's all there...

Once switched off for good, the illuminated signs become collector's items on display at the Neon Museum.

Nothing goes right at Heart Attack Grill? In any case, it's nothing more than a fictional story in which it's hard to decide who is more fantasised about, the policeman or the thief. Is this deliberate? No doubt. Las Vegas is certainly not there to show the slightest nightmare, but rather to make you dream. Dreams, then, and more dreams... Dreams that are bound to be found a little further down the Strip. Even if, on the casino side of things, it's a kind of smoke and mirrors! But isn't that what dreams are all about?

The Strip. That ill-defined seven-kilometre stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard, a vein of tarmac that crosses the entire city from south to north, roughly from the airport to downtown. Why the Strip? The origin of the name is nebulous - even a little fanciful - and is thought to derive either from a reference to the glamorous Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, or from the word strip, in reference to gamblers who had lost almost everything in the game, including their clothes, and were therefore forced to walk the boulevard almost entirely naked, torn from the green carpet.

The Strip! A world of excess in Technicolor and stereo 24 hours a day, a succession of world-famous casino hotels lined up successively, from bottom to top and on both sides, the Mandalay Bay, the Luxor, the New York-New York, the MGM Grand, the Cosmopolitan, the Planet Hollywood, the Paris, the Caesars Palace, the Linq, the Venetian, the Wynn... To which, at the risk of becoming tiresome, we should add a host of lesser-known establishments, most of which are just as crazy.

Las Vegas is no slouch when it comes to extravagance. Even if you've been warned, if you walk up the boulevard - which the agencies never forget to suggest to their customers - you'll go from astonishment to amazement, from astonishment to utter astonishment. From ohhh! to ahhh! From an Egyptian pyramid on the scale of Khufu's to the Statue of Liberty, from a 42-storey Empire State Building to a half-scale Eiffel Tower, from Roman palaces to pirate ships, from hard rock guitars to Venetian canals... In a single straight line, you complete a complete world tour. Better still, from dusk until midnight, beyond the neon lights and gigantic video screens that are everywhere, the biggest establishments all offer an open-air show, right on the Strip. A thousand jets of water in rhythm to classical or rock music at the Bellagio, a volcanic eruption with sound, flames and smoke at the Mirage... In all cases, and as always in Vegas, the crowds remain spellbound by the high quality of the shows and, in some cases, their extreme sophistication.

Since the 1960s, the party epicentre has moved from Downtown Las Vegas to the Strip and its hotel-casinos, each more dazzling than the last. Then they'd go back to their lonely prairies empty-handed, before coming back... Well, Vegas today is not much different. A long street in the middle of the desert, saloons disguised as hotels and casinos, green carpets galore, popular balls transformed into nightclubs and cabaret shows with short-dressed dancers. Over the course of 100 metres, you'll come across a shop selling 20 % hamburgers, which are cheaper than the others, a hilarious old lady posing for a photo in the arms of a Terminator, souvenir stalls offering unbeatable sales, a Minnie having a big chat with a Batman, two cowboys - real cowboys this time - dressed in ad hoc outfits because they're probably Texans, and also, at the end of the shopping arcade of the Linq hotel, the highest Ferris wheel in the world.

The city of gambling, Las Vegas? Not just gambling. More and more casino hotels are generating revenue from their countless bars and restaurants, their dazzling shows, their shopping centres, and also from hosting conventions and corporate events.

Vegas is a whirlwind, a tidal wave of sound, a near-tsunami that you can't escape until you've slammed your bedroom door shut. And even then... because there's still the window and, behind the glass, the lights come on and go off like an inviting wink. Vegas never sleeps, and neither do its visitors. Even if it does offer 150,000 rooms - compared with 85,000 for Paris itself - for the 40 million tourists who visit the city every year, including conference and incentive participants.

Attracted by the quality of the infrastructure - with one million m2 of meeting space - but also by the unity of the location and the presence of multiple and varied distractions, this clientele is more likely to set its sights on the hotels on the Strip, all of which are very upmarket, rather than those in the downtown area, which are still relatively unknown to the corporate public. For now... When it comes to accommodation, as we have seen, the choice is more than generous. Depending on your tastes or the purpose of your corporate trip - conference, team-building, reward - you can stay in a themed hotel or in a more urban establishment in keeping with the contemporary taste found in all the world's major cities and which, to put it bluntly, is shaping the Vegas of tomorrow for the foreseeable future. Either way, when it comes to comfort, there's little to go wrong: everything is luxurious. Only the Italian labels that line the Grand Canal Shoppes are real.

I've seen Montmartre. Montmartre, USA.

In the centre of the Strip, four famous themed establishments take the lion's share, offering a reconstituted Paris-Montmatre-Eiffel Tower, a larger-than-life New York, an astonishing Venice with St Mark's Square and gondoliers, and a gigantic Caesar's Palace that would no doubt have pleased the firemen painters. For true chic: the ultra-rich Wynn and its $30 million Jef Koons sculptures, the Bellagio and its good-natured elegance, the Cosmopolitan and its art collections or the Delano and its refined design. All of them, absolutely all of them, have meeting rooms, but above all they have concert halls where international mega-stars perform.

Because, clearly, for the world of show business, Vegas is a must. Concept: it's no longer the star who travels the world to meet his public, but the international public who travels to applaud him. It's less exhausting for the star, and all to the city's benefit. Céline Dion, a veritable icon in Las Vegas - she's everywhere - has understood this, filling the Coloseum, the huge showroom at Caesars Palace, all year round. But she's not the only one. They've all been to Vegas at one time or another, are there today or will be tomorrow. Sinatra, Samy Davis Junior or Dean Martin in the past, Elvis and Michael Jackson in their time, and now Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez or Britney Spears... There are so many shows; of all genres, for all tastes, and all sold out every night. Hundreds of artists, cabaret groups, illusionists, mimics galore, comedians, chippendales... but above all, reigning supreme on the Vegassian stage, the marvellous Cirque du Soleil shows, eight in all, eight different themes: the Beatles with LOVE, Michael Jackson with ONE or O, an aquatic show. All of these shows are performed almost non-stop in different venues around the city.

They are held fairly early in the evening, allowing corporate groups to enjoy themselves later in the evening in one or other of the casinos. The choice is vast, and even if each room offers more or less the same batteries of slot machines, the same roulette or blackjack tables; even if, everywhere, the lights scream out all the colours of the chromatic circle and the music thunders to pierce the eardrums; even if they all have this in common, apart from allowing their customers to smoke at will, they all make their difference through more or less assertive details. There's the Paris of the Belle Epoque and its Art Nouveau metro stations, the New York and its roller coaster speeding through the casino at 107 kph, not without first looping its loop, the Venice and its gondoliers in striped shirts, or the Caesars and its copies of Michelangelo's sculptures...

There's all that, and even if, according to Michael Dominguez, senior vice-president and head of sales at MGM Resort International (editor's note: 12 hotels in Vegas), "the proceeds from our casinos only account for 25 % of our revenue. We owe most of that to our shows, hotels and restaurants". Even if Vegas is clearly leaving more and more of the profits from gambling to its distant cousin Macao, and even if it is positioning itself more and more as a city of entertainment... you'd still have to be made of wood to escape the pleasures of betting.

From the High Roller of the Linq Hotel, the highest Ferris wheel in the world, "Sin City" appears like a luminous oasis, a haven of excess set in the middle of the Mojave Desert.

26, Black, even and pass

It's all there for the taking, including hotel lobbies, which generally have no seats other than those in front of the slot machines... So why bother, let's live Vegas as it should be lived, that's what we're here for. Even if, prudence dictates, we play small, almost stingy. To start with, ten dollars in the shiny machine; the big one, the red one, the one with the Buffalo on top. Ten dollars, a button, it turns, it turns and... two bars, a lemon, a cherry. It's gone! Let's move on to another one. Ten dollars again. A bell, a cherry and two bars... it's discouraging! But never mind, it can't last... And yet it does. In the space of just three minutes, we've lost 60 dollars. So we roulette... 50 dollars on 17. And 15 seconds later: 26, black, even and pass... lost again! That leaves blackjack, the table right next door. Total of three cards for a bet of another $20: 20 points. Dealer's total: 18. Win! Ah, sure, it's fun... It's even how some people lose fortunes, by betting a bit more anyway. But, let's face it, it would be a real shame to come to Sin City without sinning a little yourself and getting a taste, however stingy, of the delicious tension inherent in the game. Just a little.

Article 1 of 3 in this dossier Las Vegas: nothing stands in the way of nightlife

A single location, hotels galore, endless distractions and never-ending nights...
