Every year, the World Tourism Organisation, UNWTO, takes stock of the progress made around the world in facilitating the issuing of visas. The good news is that The number of travellers required to obtain a visa before visiting a country continues to fall. In fact, according to the UNWTO, the number has fallen to a record low<\/strong>. Early 2016, 61% of the world's population<\/strong> needed a traditional visa. Admittedly, the figure is still high, but it was still 75% in 1980, a figure that had hardly changed by 2008.<\/p>\n

The trend is for a gradual improvement in this quota. In fact, according to the Organisation's report, the recent problems of terrorism and insecurity do not seem to have affected efforts to simplify entry formalities worldwide. The UN tourism agency has been fighting for this simplification for years. It has demonstrated - with figures to back it up - that more than the cost of a visa, it is above all the complexity of the formalities, the waiting time and the trip to the embassy that will have a negative impact.<\/strong> on a traveller's decision to visit a country.<\/p>\n

UNWTO statistics show that 18% of the world's population could now travel without needing a visa in 2015; 15% of the same population could obtain a visa on arrival. This compares with 5% in 1980 and 8% in 2008. Finally, 6% of the world's population can enter a foreign country using an e-visa.<\/p>\n

It is this last category that is likely to see the most significant growth in the future. The World Tourism Organisation reports that countries switching from traditional visas to electronic visas accounted for 16% of the nearly 7,500 changes in the issuing regime between 2010 and 2015. Within this percentage, 91% of these changes took place in 2014 and 2015. The e-visa was introduced last year in India, for example, and is now widely used in Myanmar, while Australia is one of the pioneers in this field.<\/p>\n

A total of 54 destinations introduced simplified entry conditions for 30 nationalities between 2010 and 2015. Among the most open countries - which in fact have the highest rating for their openness to foreign visitors - are Micronesia, the Cook Islands, Nuie, Dominica, with a index 100<\/strong>. Next come Haiti with 99, Macau with an index of 85 and Hong Kong\/Mauritius tied with an index of 80.<\/p>\n

The UNWTO points out that there are significant differences from one region to another, and notes that the most restrictive regions according to the official UN classification were Central Africa, North Africa, North America and the European Union in 2015. The fear of illegal immigration for economic reasons explains the reluctance of the North American continent and the EU.<\/p>\n

Travellers to South East Asia, East Africa, the Pacific and the Caribbean, on the other hand, enjoy the most flexible entry conditions. South East Asia should continue to climb the rankings in the next UNWTO report, with Indonesia having abolished visa requirements for virtually the entire world, Vietnam gradually easing its previously restrictive formalities, and Myanmar continuing to promote electronic visas.<\/p>\n

In future, regional visas should become more common, like the Schengen visa. In the long term, an ASEAN visa could become a reality<\/strong> as well as a common visa for the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council. This initiative could represent a real step forward for travellers to this region, especially as some countries such as Kuwait and Saudi Arabia apply excessively strict entry conditions.<\/p>\n
