At regular intervals, observers of the monetary world announce the disappearance of banknotes and coins. This time, however, it looks as if this is really on the agenda. Economist Henri Bourguinat recently had this to say on the subject in an article published in Le Monde: "At all levels, efforts are being made to discourage cash payments, which are increasingly seen as old-fashioned."By encouraging the use of credit cards, governments see this as a way of combating dirty money, crime and undeclared work. For its part, the European Union also sees it as a way of stimulating consumption. It has therefore encouraged payments, even for small amounts, by lowering interbank commissions to 0.30 % of the total transaction. Not without consequences for the business model of the most widely used means of payment for travel, the corporate credit card.

This inescapable trend is in line with our increasingly technological times. MasterCard predicts that 38 % of payments made in Europe will be digital by 2020. Some countries are already well advanced in this area, such as Sweden. In Stockholm, only one in five shops now accepts payment in notes and coins. Even church collection is done via a smartphone application, Swish! If God's children are going virtual, then... it looks like it's all over for paper money.

At the same time, economic players everywhere are participating in this development. What used to be the petty expenses incurred by business travellers during their journeys is now being dematerialised. Taxis, which have long been reluctant to accept payment by card, are all starting to do so, spurred on by competition from VTCs. And very soon, urban transport tickets will be a thing of the past. After London, Amsterdam, Lille and Marseille, Paris will see its metro ticket disappear.by 2021"At the same time, terminals will accept contactless bankcards and Navigo passes will migrate to smartphones. At the same time, validation terminals will accept contactless bankcards and Navigo passes will be migrated to smartphones.

A robot at the checkout

Restaurants are following the same trend. This year in Asia, the Yum group, owner of the Pizza Hut chain, will be testing a futuristic waiter, the humanoid robot Pepper, which integrates the MasterCard MasterPass digital payment service. Customers will be able to place an order with him at the start of their meal, then pay their bill before leaving. Also in France, MasterCard is working with Edenred on a dematerialised meal voucher, where users simply place their phone on the payment terminal to pay for their lunch. And that's not to mention other initiatives launched by the credit card network such as connected payment integrated into luxury watches or, less gadgety, payment on a smartphone secured by facial recognition or fingerprint. This innovation is already being marketed in the Netherlands and soon in Belgium.

It's hard to imagine business travel remaining untouched by this groundswell for long. "Although mobile payment is not yet a topical issue for business travellers, 43% of travel managers expect the subject to come to the fore in the next two years, according to a study we recently carried out."says Patrick Diemer, Managing Director of AirPlus. To this end, the German corporate payments specialist is preparing the ground. At Frankfurt airport, for example, and soon at other German hubs, travellers will be able to pay for their car park using their smartphone equipped with NFC contactless technology. "For passengers, it's totally transparent and saves them having to go to the cash desks. For its part, the company recovers figures on a new item that it can negotiate with car park operators."explains Patrick Diemer. Similarly, the R&D team has developed a mobile payment solution for restaurants.

Contactless payment, Apple Pay electronic wallet, NFC technology that allows you to pay for purchases using a smartphone: the credit card has entered a furiously technological era. While all these developments have yet to be seen in the corporate world, it's a safe bet that these innovations will soon be part of the everyday lives of business travellers.

Apple Pay arrives

Another trend is emerging with the arrival of Google and Apple in the world of payments through their Android Pay and Apple Pay e-wallets embedded in the latest generation of iPhone 6 and Android smartphones. "Travel managers expect Google and Apple to become major players"says Patrick Diemer. Launched in the United States, Apple Pay seems to have got off to a mixed start, but as it continues to be rolled out, the solution could gain momentum. After Canada, China and Singapore, Apple Pay is coming to Europe, including France, in July. In the UK, Apple Pay is compatible with MasterCard and Visa credit cards issued by the main UK banks, as well as cards distributed by American Express, for both consumers and businesses. "It's another way of using the corporate card"Pierre-François Brézès, Managing Director France Corporate Payments at American Express, who also expects to be able to offer a contactless corporate card.within one to two years".

The increasing dematerialisation of payment methods should have a positive impact on companies' travel budgets. According to AirPlus, a specialist in corporate payment solutions, German companies, which organise 171 million business trips every year, could save more than four billion euros by eliminating cash payments. Four billion euros in Germany alone! This is a surprising figure, but it can be explained by the cost of processing expense claims. According to another study, this one by hotel solutions specialist HRS and the GBTA Foundation, each expense claim - including accommodation - takes an average of 20 minutes to process. This generates a hidden cost estimated at 53 euros. "For some time now, companies have been using cutting-edge software to manage their expense reports. But even the best of these solutions can't eliminate the 20 minutes it takes to process each receipt, or the associated costs."says Michael Fürer, AirPlus Sales Director for Germany.

And that's without counting the time spent by the travellers themselves. In the United States and the United Kingdom, 41 % of the 1,000 business travellers questioned last year were still using an Excel file to fill in their expense claims, according to a recent survey by software publisher KDS. This took up half an hour of their time in 47 % of cases, and between one and two hours for 18 % of them. The vast majority of this, of course, was done during working hours.

Companies can therefore benefit more than tangibly from seeing travel expenditure integrated seamlessly, and above all automatically, into their reporting tools. Long before dematerialisation became a buzzword, multinationals began to develop centralised payment for everything to do with airline ticketing, thanks to the lodged card. Popularised in particular by American Express with its Business Travel Account or AirPlus with its solution distributed in France in partnership with BNP Paribas to key accounts, it is also offered by other players such as CIC-Crédit Mutuel, Diners Club and more recently by the travel agency HRG, which has joined forces with Visa to launch its Central Travel Account solution in Europe. Société Générale is about to enter the market. "This solution makes life easier for everyone. For occasional travellers who have no corporate means of payment and whose tickets are paid for upstream by the company, and for frequent travellers. For frequent travellers, major expenses such as plane tickets are not deducted from the payment capacity of their business card.says Élodie Trouillaud, Head of Cards at Société Générale. What's more, calls for tender are increasingly for an offer based on both the corporate card and the hosted card".

Highly accurate reporting

The cornerstone of the entire travel payment architecture, it enables the transport part of travel to be paid efficiently by being directly integrated into the travel agencies' booking tools. But that's not its only advantage: as the card issuer is responsible for paying on behalf of the company, it presents its customers with a single invoice with payment terms that are easy on the cash flow. Above all, the transaction statement contains a wealth of travel data that can be fed back into management tools. "The card issuer adds analytical data, adds Pierre-François Brèzès. That's where value is created."

The advantage of this solution is that it guarantees very precise reporting on the volume of expenditure, whether with a particular airline, on a particular route, or for a particular class of travel. A profusion of "datas" which travel managers and purchasing managers will be delighted to analyse before negotiating their contracts with suppliers. To take analysis even further, the AirPlus Information Manager tool has included reporting on additional costs since August 2015. "Airlines have changed their pricing strategies and are offering more and more 'à la carte' services, such as extra baggage or access to lounges, underlines Patrick Diemer. Our aim is to offer companies the opportunity to analyse these transactions, as well as giving them the means to pay these fees in advance, via their escrow account."

For a long time the exclusive preserve of major accounts, debit cards are tending to be democratised as suppliers come out with solutions tailored to the needs of medium-sized businesses. Last year, BNP Paribas launched its Voyage card, affiliated to the VISA network and aimed at the mid-market, i.e. all those companies whose expenditure is between €50,000 and €3 million. "We are working closely with the major travel agency networks to develop this solution".says Laurent Sautré, head of commercial cards at the French bank.

At the same time, over the years, the embedded card has expanded its footprint to include other components of business travel in addition to air travel - rail transport, hotels, car hire - to increase the possibilities for centralised payment while enabling management tools to "manage" the card.capture"In this way, they can optimise the management of these expenses. In this context, the issuers of corporate cards are studying the possibilities of opening up this solution to the new players who are increasingly present in the world of business travel, such as Uber and Airbnb. Similarly, in France, AirPlus and American Express are partnering with Business Table to streamline the booking and billing of business meals.

The fact remains that perfection is not in this world, and that the debit card is not the miracle solution to all the problems associated with business travel. Corporate credit cards are still essential for paying for all the extras involved in travel: restaurants, taxis, urban transport, tips and other small expenses. Offered by a very wide range of players, from the inventors of the American Express and Diners Club credit card concepts to the major retail banks - BNP Paribas and Société Générale in France and HSBC, Citi and Bank of America Merrill Lynch in the UK - and specialists such as AirPlus in Germany and the UK, the corporate credit card is at the heart of travel payment organisation. Apart from Amex and Diners, which have their own acceptance networks, they may be affiliated to Visa or Mastercard and come in a Gold or Platinum statutory version for senior executives, combined with VIP services and higher levels of insurance cover. Some stand out from the crowd, such as American Express, whose card can be co-branded with Air France-KLM, or Société Générale, which plays the environmental card. "We are associated with the Office National des Forêts and, for every payment made with a Société Générale business card, five centimes are donated to this association."explains Élodie Trouillaud.

Although its scope is widening, the card is still not accepted by certain travel industry players, in particular low-cost airlines, online travel agencies and many hotels. This is why a new solution appeared on the market at the turn of the last decade: the virtual card, launched at the end of the 2000s under the name vPayment by American Express, AIDA by AirPlus, followed by BNP and its Virtual Card. Halfway between a corporate card and an escrow account, it functions like a "credit card".plastic" by generating a virtual 16-digit number that can be used to complete online transactions. And, as with a credit card, it is possible to set spending limits or restrict its use over time. At the same time, just like a stored-value card, it can be integrated automatically into booking channels, particularly hotel booking platforms, with a debit to the company's account.

The virtual card is becoming increasingly popular with travel agents as a solution to hotel expenses and a way for companies to rationalise their budgets.

Virtual cards on the rise

Only two years ago, the virtual card was still a fledgling technology, but now it seems to have fully entered the mainstream. Firstly, because issuers are increasingly offering them. Secondly, after several European countries, including Germany and France, AirPlus has launched its AIDA solution in Austria and Australia, with Hong Kong and the United States to follow. For its part, BNP is extending its range of possibilities by opening it up to currencies other than the euro, such as the pound sterling, the dollar and the Swiss franc, with other currencies to follow by the end of the year. "Foreign exchange costs are avoided and companies with foreign subsidiaries can make greater use of them".says Laurent Sautré.

But above all, what explains much of the double-digit growth in its use is that it is not only integrated into the booking process of companies, but also by travel agencies who use it themselves on behalf of their customers. "The virtual card offers them a technical solution for paying hotels and then re-invoicing customers for their stays, all with much more accurate data reconciliation."concludes Pierre-François Brèzès. According to Chrome River, a US specialist in expense management solutions, the most likely to overstate their expenses are executive vice-presidents (13.9%), followed by CEOs and company owners (6.4%). This figure is corroborated by the annual study by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), which shows that one in five cases of fraud originates at the highest levels of the company. Chrome also paints a picture of the profiteer: in 73% of cases, the profiteer is a man - aged 46 - who works in the entertainment industry, with an average annual fraud of 2,500 $. Among the techniques used, most (45 %) pass on personal expenses to the company's account, for example a dinner with their partner. Others (35 %) demand higher mileage expenses and 29 % inflate tips. Finally, 10 % demand reimbursement for journeys not made and events cancelled. But managers should avoid any unnecessary paranoia: 94 % of employees are respectful of company funds.

REGULATIONS
The great interchange upheaval

By limiting the rate of interchange fees to 0.3 % on credit card payments since December, the European Union seems to have radically changed the way corporate payments are organised. Of course, the prospect of lower interchange fees is nothing new. And in recent years, many players have lobbied Brussels to highlight the special features of the business market: the market share of three-party systems such as American Express or Diners Club, which are not affected by this limit, and the fact that these fees, which used to be around 1.5 %, were used to finance their innovations in business services. In the end, the European authorities drew a distinction between cards for the general public and commercial cards, defining the latter as "as a payment instrument used solely for business expenses"without forgetting to specify ".billed directly to the company's account."As a result, while the limit does not apply to virtual cards, this is not the case for corporate cards, which are most often debited from employees' bank accounts. Société Générale believes that "The distinction is somewhat artificial in this context. Employee account debit business cards can only be used for professional purposes, and this is clearly stated in our operating conditions. " "This new regulation implies a complete change of business model for all players in this market"says Laurent Sautré of BNP Paribas. Faced with a significant drop in revenues, issuers may be tempted to charge for a service that used to be free. In the countries where it issues its Travel Expense credit cards, Germany and the UK, AirPlus has introduced fees of between 1.09 % and 1.19 % for each transaction carried out in Europe, excluding cash withdrawals.

Multiple purposes justify multiple means: by adding to the traditional "plastic" card a whole range of solutions adapted
