All these places are part of the legend of Paris, conveying in the collective unconscious the image of lightness and daring that has surrounded the capital since the Roaring Twenties. But these rhinestone and glitter myths are far from the only cabarets in France, as there are 150 throughout the country. " A cabaret is an establishment where, while consuming, the customers attend variety shows, and in certain cases can dance afterwards".says Daniel Stevens, General Manager of the Chambre Syndicale des Cabarets Artistiques et des Discothèques. Every year, they attract nearly 3,600,000 spectators from France and abroad, including 2,400,000 for the Paris shows alone.
Often associated with an older clientele, cabarets have undergone a major facelift over the last three years or so. The revues are increasingly contemporary, and the establishments are calling on renowned directors such as Philippe Découflé and Franco Dragone, and very chic and famous costume designers such as Kark Lagerfeld, Christian Louboutin and Chantal Thomass. Not to mention guest stars like Dita Von Teese and Arielle Dombasle. " New venues are also springing up, both in Paris and in the provinces, adds Daniel Stevens. Today, we're working to erase the old-fashioned image that sticks to magazines.."

High fashion magazines

The Parisian venues, whose aura radiates around the world, have started to modernise their shows. The opening in 2013 of the Mugler Follies revue at the Comédia - the former Eldorado theatre, in the X arrondissement of Paris - is just one example.e arrondissement of Paris - is no stranger to their approach. Now defunct, this show by fashion designer Thierry Mugler has prompted the major cabarets to review their offerings. The first to go on the offensive, Le Lido undertook a complete makeover in 2014. A facelift that lasted four months! New decor, new machinery for a new show entitled Paris Merveille and orchestrated by a staging celebrity, Franco Dragone, formerly of the Cirques du Soleil and Archaos. This undisputed master of the big shows has revisited the revue, as confirmed by Hervé Duperret, General Manager: " is a revival of tradition. Franco Dragone has succeeded in modernising the revue while retaining the Lido's DNA: beautiful artists, feathers, rhinestones, grand staircases, Bluebell Girls with legs that never end, Lido Boys Dancers with impeccable abs, etc....".
The show features a wall of Led screens, special effects and costumes designed by Nicolas Vaudelet, ex-stylist for Christian Lacroix and Jean Paul Gaultier, as well as extraordinary artists such as the sword-swallower Lucky Hell and Manon, the singer and showgirl who is a UFO in the history of the Lido. With her fiery hair, her tattoos and her small stature, this semi-finalist of The Voice totally breaks the old codes of the establishment. Her mezzo-soprano voice sets the venue alight every night, attracting a young audience who are blown away!

Record attendance

The same is true of the Moulin Rouge, another emblem of Parisian nightlife. The venue has become very fashionable, with an average occupancy rate of 96 % every night! This record attendance can be attributed to a number of initiatives aimed at young people. For 15 years, the venue has been riding on the success of Baz Luhrmann's film Moulin Rouge, which has given it an international reputation. As a result, it is not uncommon today to come across people under the age of 20 spending an evening with friends or family in this sublime Belle Epoque setting. French and foreign customers come here to admire the Féerie show. While the show launched in 1999 remains unchanged - including a frenzied French Cancan number - new lighting effects, a revamped design and VIP services have been introduced. As for the kitchen, the Dalloyau catering team has also been replaced by chef David Le Quellec, assisted by pastry chef Samuel Pannetrat. The menu has undergone a major overhaul, and now includes a gourmet menu featuring luxury products from the region. Reservations are essential, as dishes are prepared at short notice.

    Moulin Rouge - Sandie Bertrand

    ® Moulin Rouge - J. Riccardo Tinelli

This transformist cabaret, created by a group of friends, attracts a clientele ranging from... 7 to 77 years old! The ringleader, Framboise, who goes by Pascal in secular life and is also the founder of the place: " When we created l'Artishow in 2002, we imagined a convivial venue that was much more than a transformist show. We mix comedy, dance and song... all without any vulgarity! More than half of the artists have been there from the start. Some serve in the dining room between performances, while others meet the guests. A former doctor, Pascal likes to say that "his new job is not far removed from his old one: we bring happiness to others... In the current climate of gloom, that's worth all the boxes of Prozac!
In other places, renewal means innovation. Located on the prestigious Avenue Montaigne, in the former Drouot rooms, Manko is much more than a trendy gourmet restaurant. Opened by Gaston Acurio, the star of Peruvian cuisine, in the company of Benjamin Patou, owner of the Bus Palladium and the Arc, and singer Garou, the restaurant is transformed into a cabaret every Friday and Saturday. The show is directed by Manon Savary - a former member of the Mugler Follies - and hosted by Marc Zaffuto and Emmanuel d'Orazio, the creators of the Club Sandwich evening.
The revue is designed to be offbeat and participatory: the artists leave the stage, perform aerial acts above the customers, mingle with the audience... A contortionist even performs a fantastic act in a wheelchair!
The show is a mix of circus and burlesque. Because the pin-up and glamour trends are also affecting cabarets. Mathieu Almaric's 2010 film Tournée, depicting the life of an American neo-burlesque cabaret troupe performing in various French towns, contributed to this trend. Just like the American stripper Dita Von Teese, who thrills men every time she appears. "Burlesque is part of the same family as revues: you can do variety shows with the participation of different artists," says Valentina Del Pearls, founder of the Burlesque Klub.
Created in 2010, the Burlesque Klub aims to spread the artistic and feminist movement known as neo-burlesque. Born in the United States in the 90s, this form of entertainment revolves around performers who take up the codes of retro striptease for aesthetic, humorous or committed purposes. "The clientele is very varied. It's made up of men and women of all ages, coming as a couple or with friends", explains the stripper. Every Saturday night, the cabaret opens its doors at the La Nouvelle Seine theatre. Its private clients include companies such as Google, Virgin Megastore, Bouygues Construction, France Télévisions and Digital Factory.
Lettingo Cabaret, another approach to the concept launched in 2012, is the brainchild of a group of artist friends who wanted to revive the legend of the Parisian cabaret. "We wanted to mix different disciplines in the same evening, to recapture the festive and popular spirit of the cabarets of the late 19th century, but with a contemporary twist, a bit like a modern circus," explains revue leader Claire Pringent, aka Salvia Badtripes on stage.

The neo-burlesque trend

The Lettingo Cabaret takes place once every two months at the Café de la Presse - and since November also at the China Club restaurant - with a show that revamps the concept of the dinner show. For nearly two hours, a dozen artists from France and abroad take the audience on an original journey, with a new theme every month. Clowns, strippers, jugglers, magicians, lyrical singers, contortionists, fakirs, transformers, pantomime artists, pole dancers... there are plenty of original creations to choose from. "Initially, our clientele came from the alternative scene. But today it's made up of 30-45 year olds from upper middle classes looking for new experiences". For Claire Prigent, "cabaret is the art of the crisis". Close to the customers at the tables, the artists establish a truly interactive relationship with the audience. The light-heartedness, mischievous humour and poetry create a good-natured atmosphere. Admission to both the Café de la Presse and the China Club is free. Only meals and drinks are chargeable. Both establishments are available for private hire by companies.
But you don't necessarily have to go to Paris to enjoy a cabaret show. In the provinces too, quality revues are presented. The Royal Palace in Kirrwiller, Alsace, is a perfect example. Attracting over 200,000 French and cross-border spectators every year, it is one of the three biggest cabarets in France, along with the Lido and the Moulin Rouge!
The music hall has its own cooks and musicians, as well as its own troupe of around forty international artists, singers, acrobats, dancers and magicians. The show features seven acts, compared with just two or three in most cabarets.
Every year, the establishment devotes a budget of around 4 million euros to the creation of a new revue. For the first time in the history of cabarets, the latest show, called Flamboyant, features five professional models in colourful fashion shows.... " In recent years, this is the venue that has seen the strongest growth in the cabaret-music hall formula, i.e. with the revue set back a little to leave more room for the musical parts", notes Daniel Stevens, who continues: "In the provinces, there is often a real research approach in the creation of a show. Both artistically and technically".

Pin-up girls stripped bare with humour and a touch of feminism: the neo-burlesque spirit reborn in the United States is embodied in France by the Burlesque Klub troupe. ® Kalymar

The province, too, is a celebration

On a smaller scale, in Artigues, near Bordeaux, the Grain d'Folie has been taking audiences on a joyful interlude in their daily lives for the past 15 years. Founded by Tieno, a magician and producer of artists, it presents shows in the pure tradition of French cabaret. "I've made a music hall just as I imagined it: with laughter, sensuality and quality shows in quick succession. Few feathers, a French Cancan, a Crazy Horse-type act, singers, dancers and transformists... 12 artists perform for an hour and a half in front of seated customers before giving way to a two-hour show. From reception to catering, everything is meticulously thought through to ensure that the customer is truly the king of the evening. "Two years ago, we created a Cabaret label in the South-West of France. The member establishments commit to a common charter of professional quality, in terms of the show, the meal and the welcome.
Six establishments currently meet the quality criteria required by the charter.
"The basis of a good performance is based as much on the lighting as on the visuals, on the sound as on the atmosphere, which has to be convivial", says Jean jacques Mazars, artistic director of Oh Paradis in Lyon. In his establishment, the feeling of being at home is reinforced by the intimate feel of the restaurant - which seats 90 - and also by the waiters, who are the artists themselves and come to meet the audience at the end of the evening.

An assertive, high-tech and multimedia positioning at Voulez-Vous in Lyon and Ingré © Voulez-Vous

In Brittany, a stone's throw from Brest airport, Breizh Paradise has chosen to play the identity card by presenting 100 % Breton entertainment, as confirmed by Myriam Bingue, the director. "Previously, a Parisian troupe came every weekend with its own revue. The 2016 show, Les Tonnerres du Breizh, featured five dancers, a master of ceremonies, two singers and three magicians, one of whom was twice European champion. In the audience, the vast majority of whom are local, are a lot of young people who have come to celebrate and see a show that speaks to them, with contemporary music and dance.
Cabarets are enjoying a veritable renaissance.
