At a press conference in early December, Didier Robert, President of the R\u00e9union region, and Marie-Joseph Mal\u00e9, CEO of Air Austral, congratulated each other on a historic event: for the first time in the island's history, a non-stop flight is about to link St Denis de la R\u00e9union to China, in this case the city of Guangzhou, from February 2017. In a way, it's the realisation of a dream for local elected representatives who want to open up to the growth prospects of the Chinese giant, particularly in terms of tourism.
\nAs far as Air Austral is concerned, this is a new stage in its development which \"involves increased cooperation with the region's airlines\", says Marie-Joseph Mal\u00e9. The route will be operated in partnership with Air Madagascar, which will operate an Airbus A340-300 with 275 seats in a three-class configuration (Business, Premium Eco and Economy). \"By working with Air Madagascar, we are sharing the financial risks involved in opening a new route. This enables us to extend our network. Other similar agreements should follow\", added Air Austral's CEO. The airline already has an agreement with Air Mauritius for flights to Australia.
\nThis search for partners is taking place against a backdrop of increasing competition, particularly on routes between mainland France and R\u00e9union. The arrival of low-cost carrier French Blue, a subsidiary of Air Cara\u00efbes, is reshuffling the air transport deck on the island. There are now five airlines flying between Paris and St Denis: Air Austral, Air France, Corsair, XL Airways and French Blue. The latter is offering fares from \u20ac600 return to Paris, a rate which, while not systematically followed by the competition, is nonetheless driving down ticket prices.
\nAs part of this new competition, Air Austral's strategy is based on three key ideas: quality of service, network expansion and synergy with other players on the island. The arrival of the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the reconfiguration of all in-flight products on the Boeing 777-300 were the first step, implemented last year. The expansion of the network with Boeing 787s marks a second phase, with these aircraft operating non-stop flights to Bangkok since November, as well as a third weekly frequency to Johannesburg and a non-stop route between Paris and Mayotte. At the same time, Chennai (Madras) is also connected by its own Boeing 737-800.
\nThe agreement between Air Austral and Air Madagascar to serve China foreshadows a strategy of closer links with other carriers. No sooner had the ink dried on the agreement for the Tananarive-St Denis-Canton route than Air Austral and XL Airways announced that they would be joining forces on routes to mainland France. At the end of December, the two airlines indicated that they were cooperating by coordinating their schedules and pooling their purchases of fuel and equipment in order to reduce this cost item through economies of scale. Cooperation on timetables should also benefit passengers. Air Austral will be introducing two weekly flights to Marseille in October, in addition to those operated by XL Airways. For his part, the CEO of XL Airways recently announced the probable opening of a Toulouse-La R\u00e9union route.<\/p>\n
