In their day, clippers were true racing cars, carrying their cargoes at high speed thanks to their huge sails. Inspired by these 'greyhounds of the seas', whose speed has now been largely surpassed, the Star Clipper follows the slow, joyful rhythm of the Windward Islands.
\nFour masts! Four vertical lines entwined in their rigging, soaring like arrows into the sky over the port of Philipsburg, in Saint Martin, in the West Indies. Four exclamation marks, reminiscent of the navy of yesteryear, when ports, especially the big ones, were not only alive but also knew how to look good. This silhouette, famous in all the warm waters of the planet, can only be that of the Star Clipper, the darling - along with her cousin, the Royal Clipper - of the world's most romantic sailing cruises. Tonight, she will set sail to glide between the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, snubbing some, anchoring off others or mooring at their docks when they have one.<\/p>\n

In the hushed atmosphere of the library or around the dining room tables, the elective affinities between passengers are born. Alain Parinet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

For the time being, most of its future passengers, including those belonging to a corporate group, have played it safe in the face of possible plane delays and ric and rac connections. So they arrived the day before boarding, and now have a whole day to discover Saint Martin, the very first destination in a series of seven islands they will visit on their stopover.
\nSaint Martin, then. The smallest island in the world to be divided between two sovereign powers - France and the Netherlands - since 1648. For the time being, we'll confine ourselves to the French part, which has the good idea of also being the most sophisticated, the calmest and the closest to what is known as the French art de vivre. In the tropics, after all. As usual, these distil a wealth of colours, dazzling sunshine, tousled coconut palms, golden sandy beaches, houses with elaborate verandas; and to liven things up, a host of lolos, in other words West Indian-style bistros, where the ti' punch is more than generous... God, they're treacherous, these cocktails made with white rum, sugar cane syrup and lime! They'll knock you over in no time, with the ambient heat and Caribbean music adding to the alcohol content.<\/p>\n

In Marigot, the tiny capital of the French part of the island, they stand shoulder to shoulder on the seafront and next to the central market. \"Try one of these! Go on, they're the best in the whole of the West Indies; afterwards, you'll definitely be back!\" These? These are fish fritters, exceptional indeed, and they are made by the imposing Rosemary, a figurehead of the market who, since 1978, wearing a madras shirt and creoles in her ears, officiates between her tables, which are also covered in madras. The tone is set: life here moves at a snail's pace, easily putting off until tomorrow what could be done the same day. It's like that on all the islands of the Caribbean; and even more so on the smallest, most isolated ones, the ones we'll be lucky enough to visit on our future sea voyage. But for now, after the narrow streets of Marigot, its charming houses and the Fort Louis that dominates the town, we'll let ourselves be guided by minibus along the roads of this France that is as gentle as it is colourful. Fashionable beaches, surfers, a town - Grand Case - declared the island's gastronomic capital, then other, more reserved beaches, rolling hills, celebrity villas hidden in the greenery and a seaside resort, Orient Bay, which is often referred to as tropical Saint-Tropez. Too bad we won't get to see the Saint Martinese night - the boat is there, waiting. And what a boat! A 115-metre white slender, four masts - the tallest effortlessly reaching 63 metres -, 3,365 m2<\/sup> of sails for the moment rolled up on their booms, mahogany railings, gleaming brass, deep French blue carpeting in the public areas, burgundy red in the library, all enhanced by marine motifs, golden yellow ropes and knots, staircases you don't know what to do with, four decks, common areas still cluttered with passengers' luggage and which you pass through distractedly and... the cabin which, of course, with its 13-14 m2<\/sup>Although not 'Versailles' in size, it nonetheless offers an excellent level of comfort, rather like a private yacht. Mirrors everywhere, a dressing table, a bathroom with shower and toilet and, above a shelf of precious wood running along the side of the boat, a porthole flush with the water. The porthole will be the talk of the town when the boat reaches the high seas...<\/p>\n

Many activities punctuate the voyage. While the more daring climb the mast to take in the breathtaking views, others simply choose to laze on the vast teak decks, lulled by the trade winds \u00a9 Alain Parinet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The loudspeaker announces, in incomprehensible English with its Russian accent and rolled 'r's - or is it Hungarian? -that dinner is served. So let's dine and discover, at the same time, a particularly sophisticated service \u00e0 l'assiette and a dining room with 170 covers corresponding to the capacity of the ship. Apart from the participants in a business tourism group who have obviously already met, nobody knows each other. So, we size each other up, we evaluate each other, each choosing, as far as possible, a table that suits his language and his way of doing things. The French are more likely to sit with the French, the Americans with the Americans and the English with the English... It's only later, over the course of events, cocktails, stopovers and excursions that, cultural barriers aside, complicities, if not friendships, will be forged.
\nAgain the loudspeaker with the terrible accent... Departure is announced, the champagne is popped on the upper deck and the accent is finally identified. It's Peter's, a very deep voice that he claims is Bavarian before it is German. He's the cruise director, basically the master of ceremonies, who will be hosting conferences and evening events throughout the cruise.
\nIt's always moving when a boat sails away, but this is downright poignant. And why is that? Because, just when you thought the ship was going to motor out of the harbour, the sails slowly come up. They dominate the whole building, from stern to bow, billowing in the wind and taking on artistic white curves. It's sublime, all the more so when the management, stopping at nothing, plays the music created by Vangelis for the film 1492: Christopher Columbus on the upper deck. All of a sudden, the conversations cease and make way for this sort of opera spinning through the dark waters of the night. Then, as if sacrificing ourselves to the very chic cruises of yesteryear, we dance a little on the lower deck... A little later, everyone will return to his or her cabin and cosy bed.
\nAlas, that's without taking into account the rolling and pitching that is accentuated by the boat's list, which is such that the famous porthole, the one that was charming earlier, becomes very worrying when it switches to underwater mode... It's frightening for a novice, especially as, when it passes the surface again, it seems to be to better take advantage of the fury of the waves that are hurled against its window and are not unlike what happens in a washing machine. The next morning, all is forgotten. Around the breakfast buffet, as generous as a palace's, the story of the washing machine that kept all the starboard cabins awake in anguish, is now the subject of much laughter.<\/p>\n

On board, life gets organised. People went to their cabins to get settled in, stretched out on deckchairs under the sun-drenched sails, and tried on the flippers and snorkel they would be using for the rest of the trip. At midday, after the buffet lunch, the boat moors at the Charlestown pontoon, on the island of Nevis, which you quickly discover - perhaps too quickly - during an excursion or a hike previously offered on board. But that's what a cruise is all about: taking in a bit of each stopover, if possible the best, a bit of nature here, a bit of the village there, a bit of physical exercise elsewhere; and culture and history everywhere, great and small. At the end of the day, it's by combining these little things that we make a lot, and that we capture the spirit of the Caribbean archipelago: the same ways on all the islands and yet different civilisations, the same sea and yet dissimilar lands.
\nThe same goes for the subjects and themes of the excursions, which can be chosen according to taste or mood, but also according to the focus and duration of a stopover. In Nevis, for example, you'll take a discovery tour of the old sugar cane plantations; in Dominica, you'll descend the rapids of a wild river perched on a buoy; in Les Saintes, you'll be content to hang out on the terrace of a caf\u00e9 and stroll through the streets of this marvellous dolls' village; In Guadeloupe, you can opt for an eco-tour on a boat fitted with a hydrophone that lets you listen to the songs of whales and dolphins; in Antigua, you can venture into the canopy; in Saint Barth\u00e9l\u00e9my, you can dive under the sea in a yellow submarine with panoramic views... For each island, the Star Clipper management offers more or less three or four different themes, to which it adds a mini-discovery of the island as well as simple beach games and water sports: windsurfing, paddle-boarding, regattas for beginners.
\nFearing repetition and the ever-present boredom, everyone had overloaded their suitcases with big books, the more connected having opted for a tablet, admittedly less glamorous, but so much lighter. Alas for literature, even detective fiction, there was hardly time to go beyond even a simple preface. Life on board, while not whirlwind, has no downtime whatsoever. Starting with the magic of raising the sails at each departure, accompanied each time by the music of Vangelis, which awakens in everyone old fantasies of South Sea adventurers, buccaneers and pirates of the Caribbean... Then there are the daily lectures on the history of the Caribbean and sailing, the games on deck, the possibility of climbing the masts (although you must be sure of this), the buffet cocktails at the end of the afternoon, then the dinners - no one changes tables now, everyone has found the right table - and the evening dances hosted by the crew, punctuated by star-gazing when the night is clear... Really, in the midst of all this, one wonders who would still have time to open a book, or even just to lean against the rail and watch the sea go by.<\/p>\n

The shimmering Creole huts of Deshaies, a small fishing village on the north coast of Guadeloupe, are a delightful place to stop. Alain Parinet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

It's nine o'clock in the morning, the sun is shining as usual and the small port of Deshaies, to the north of Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe, is in sight. Deshaies overlooks a blue lagoon, white sand and waddling boats; in short, Deshaies overlooks everything you could possibly want, but in any case is a world away from Guadeloupe in general and the urbanism of Pointe-\u00e0-Pitre in particular. Deshaies is really quiet, and pretty too. Little colourful houses in an arc along the beach-port, shops selling madras fabrics, lolos, one or two mini-markets and life as it goes along, seemingly unaffected by the stress of the internet century.
\nThe late Coluche was no stranger to the area, having settled in the upper part of the village. Today, his house has disappeared, but what remains is the park - five hectares all the same - in fact an extraordinary botanical garden now open to the public and of which the famous comedian was one of the last owners: hibiscus, orchids, cactus, cheese tree, baobab, banyan tree, water lily pond... all enlivened by the chatter of parrots and lorikeets. It's clear that the artist was not lacking in means or taste... And, to spoil all this green holiday, there's a panoramic restaurant offering excellent Guadeloupean specialities. So lunch, a shot of rum arranged as it should be, and as a result the merriment of an afternoon that passes very quickly under the tropical sky. By 5pm, everyone is back on board, just in time for a relaxed tea time with English-style sandwiches. Later, it's on to dinner, followed by a blistering disco night, with hits by Donna Summer, Queen and all the others from the crazy era, YMCA and tutti quanti.
\nThere are still two ports of call, Antigua and Saint Barth\u00e9l\u00e9my, and between them the Captain's evening with a full crew and all the trimmings. There's also an hour's sailing in the company of the Royal Clipper - the Star Clipper's even bigger cousin - a boat launch in the open sea for a photo session of the ship offered to all, a swimming experience in the company of gigantic stingrays, a semi-submersible discovery of the ocean floor... Two stops, then, and each time the anchor is dropped in the company of yachts that exceed all measures, some even displaying private helicopters on their upper deck... That's saying a lot! It's so rich it's too much. Even in the mini-market in Falmouth Harbour marina, Antigua, which sells entire shelves of Veuve Clicquot champagnes and out-of-date Armagnac.<\/p>\n

Beautiful people<\/h3>\n

These two islands - in addition to the old port of Falmouth and its perfectly restored buildings, some of which date back to the 18th century - are also home to a large number of other attractions.e<\/sup> In the 21st century, they will be approached, not just for the history, but above all for the glamour they convey in the pages of celebrity magazines, for that indefinable feeling of importance that comes from setting foot where the world's celebrities set foot. For example, Eric Clapton's villa and the ultra-class Carlisle Bay hotel on Antigua and Saint Barth, the simple residences of the late Serge Nureyev and Johnny Halliday.
\nBut apart from the eternal Chanel, Lacoste, Longchamp, Prada, Dior and Bulgari boutiques, these islands have an incredible charm, with sophisticated bistros and top-of-the-range restaurants, and an art of living that in some ways is reminiscent of the C\u00f4te d'Azur before its catastrophic urbanisation. For its part, the Star Clipper, an identical reproduction of the clippers of the 19th century, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and, almost as if it were living on the edge of time, is taking its old-fashioned sails across the seven seas as the seasons go by. If you have to show your credentials to access this cliff and the beach beside it, it's because a hotel - and what a hotel - has set up there, in a sort of two-in-one solution. The ultra-private villas sit on the cliff, leaving the beach to the more traditional rooms. Between the two, the communal areas have very little in common, apart from their name. The whole is buried in an abundance of vegetation where a solitary parrot has settled, gorged on nuts by a more than generous clientele. Curiously, it is the Mediterranean that has imposed its style here, in the depths of the Caribbean; its white volumes inspired by Cycladic Greece, its arcades undoubtedly borrowed from those of the Maghreb and even its colonnades that are reminiscent of Minoan architecture. The cuisine is traditional, but with a modern twist. Truffles, salmon, foie gras... The tone is set. And then there's the cellar! A million bottles, Burgundy, Bordeaux, all the great American wines... Very expensive, very rare, but also very affordable. One of Saint-Martin's must-visits.<\/p>\n
