The famous transatlantic crossings began, marking the supremacy of German shipowners in the North Atlantic. In 1897, the Kaiser Wilhem der Grosse became the biggest, fastest, most luxurious and most modern ocean liner! Its four gigantic chimneys were copied by many shipping companies, including Britain's Cunard, which became one of the leaders in the transatlantic market and positioned itself on the so-called romance cruises, paving the way for the Golden Age of transoceanic shipping.

It was the time of the great ships and the boom in European shipyards, including those at Saint-Nazaire, opened by the Péreire brothers. Famous ships were built there, including the France in 1912, the Ile-de-France in 1925, the first ocean liner to be decorated in pure Art Deco style, and finally, in 1935, the Normandie, which earned the reputation of being the most beautiful liner ever launched by France. And with good reason: its decoration was a showcase for the French art of the 1930s. The most renowned artists were involved in its design. Its gigantic dining room, for example, stretches over three decks with monumental six-metre-high access doors, and is adorned with statues by Louis Dejean, cascades and glass columns by Lalique. Its walls are covered in engraved glass by Auguste Labouret...

Her 2,000 passengers are divided into three classes, the first of which have vast suites and flats as well as luxurious lounges. Also on board are a theatre, an indoor swimming pool and a winter garden. The Normandie sailed across the ocean at an average speed of 29.94 knots, linking Southampton in Great Britain to New York in the USA in just under four days! This was a feat for the time, and earned her the Blue Ribbon, the prize for the fastest transatlantic liner in the world. The British response was swift. In August 1936, Cunard launched the Queen Mary, which took back the trophy by crossing the Atlantic in three days and 10 hours!

Today, the Queen Mary 2 brings back to her passengers the atmosphere that reigned on board her ancestor. "This is the last liner in the world to cross the transatlantic seas in one go! A seven-day plunge into the history and discreet luxury of the 1930s, but with all the modern comforts of a recently refurbished ship."says Corinne Renard. Embodying the splendour ofa time when people took the time to liveThis giant of the seas makes around thirty seven- to eight-night crossings between Europe and the United States. The 2,691 passengers and 1,200 crew usually embark in Southampton for New York. But in September 2017, for the 500th anniversary of Le Havre, Cunard will be offering an exceptional departure from the Normandy city. This seven-night service embodies the glory days of the famous liner France, which made its last transatlantic crossing in 1974. Since then, only two liners have linked the two cities non-stop. "600 French customers have already booked," enthuses Corinne Renard. Their emotions will no doubt be running high as they approach Newfoundland, with the boat cruising just a few miles from where the Titanic sank. And a touch of nostalgia will probably seize everyone when, in the early hours of the seventh day, the silhouettes of the Statue of Liberty and the buildings of Manhattan stand out against the morning mist.

The spirit of the great navigators

You'll also feel a tug at your heartstrings when you come aboard another legend of the seas, Le Ponant. Varnished wood, old-fashioned ropes, bulging sails, gleaming brass and an attentive crew... Le Ponant has a real cachet! Whether in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean, this 88-metre, three-masted sailing ship docks in small, confidential coves and discreet harbours thanks to its shallow draught. The anchorages are an opportunity to discover the marine flora and fauna, with commentary by a naturalist.

An intimate ship with 32 cabins, the Ponant can be privatised for VIP cruises.

On board, the atmosphere is pure yachting stylethe trend towards casual elegance. "We are the only French luxury cruise operator"Hervé Bellaïche, the cruise operator's Deputy Sales & Marketing Director. The dream continues as the majestic yacht cruises the Caribbean, the Mediterranean or the Gulf of Thailand. More recently, the Star Clipper has also been cruising the translucent waters of Indonesia, departing from romantic Bali, the island of spices. Semarang, Komodo and its dragons, the Gili Islands and their remarkable coral reefs... The ports of call are exceptional!

Exceptionality is also the hallmark of Silhouette Cruises. The company organises intimate expeditions to the paradise archipelago of the Seychelles aboard two sailing yachts, the Sea Star and the Sea Bird. Departing from Mahé, they each take 18 passengers on a seven-day eco-safari cruise. On board, in addition to the crew of nine, is a naturalist who leads the excursions and gives lectures on the Seychelles ecological system.

However, for all their charm, the Seychelles do not have a lot to offer. the seductive power of Polynesia which remains the romantic destination par excellence.
