Every day, millions of business travellers battle against all the clocks in the world, running from taxi to plane, from hotel to meeting. As a result, they are forced to find their own little tricks and habits to make their journeys more productive and less stressful. very simple rules like avoiding having to check in luggage, for example. This is the first piece of advice recently given by Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson on the hotel group's website. Thomas Jonglez, a former Usinor executive who has been publishing tourist guides since 2005, is also a fan of 'light' travel: "Whether it's for ten days or six months, apart from rare exceptions, I only travel with cabin baggage. I take eight or ten shirts with me; I manage, I have them washed and ironed. This avoids the risk of losing my luggage and, above all, saves precious time at check-in and on arrival."

Lost luggage, delays and cancellations, fear of missing the plane, endless queues at security checks : reasons for stress when travelling on business are as numerous as they are varied. A study published earlier this year by Booking.com showed that 93% of travellers surveyed experience stress at some point during their trip. Fortunately, in their quest for efficiency, frequent travellers are now finding new allies in the technological features built into smartphones. "Everything is in my phone: the boarding pass, the airline's application that warns me if the flight is delayed or if the departure gate has changed, etc.explains Stéphane Estryn, director of mergers and acquisitions at Publicis Groupe. This eliminates all the little irritations of travelling. You check in for your flight from your phone as you enter the taxi, you arrive at the airport and, if you're a frequent traveller, you quickly go through the controls to get to the lounge. I like this seamless, easy and fluid aspect.."

The dematerialisation of tickets and boarding passes simplifies life for passengers.

As part of a smoother journey through the world's major hubs, the widespread use of automatic kiosks - which, in a way, could be seen as a lesser service on the part of airlines and airport operators - is also finding favour with travellers. According to the annual survey conducted by SITA, world leader in air transport technologies, 56 % of passengers who have used the automatic baggage drop-off system are in favour of this solution. For Francesco Violante, CEO of SITA, "Once passengers have started using kiosks for check-in, automatic doors and other new technologies, they prefer to continue using them rather than revert to human interaction."This sentiment is confirmed by a joint study by the Global Business Travel Association and GDS Sabre showing that more than 70 % of business travellers - slightly fewer in Northern Europe and Germany - favour self-service technologies to manage their travel.

But it is also their ability to managing the vagaries of travel that high-tech solutions are being widely adopted by managers on the move. A security expert at Saretech, Pierre Guillemin makes many return journeys a month in France, mostly by train, and particularly appreciates being able to change his itinerary at will via the SNCF application. "I always know when I'm leaving, but never precisely when I'm coming back. Nine times out of ten, I have to change my ticket at the last minute. Thanks to the smarpthone, it's extremely easy."explains this traveller, who also notes that "the app can reduce stress, for example by indicating the departure track when you only have a few minutes to change trains."

Stéphane Estryn, for his part, is a frequent visitor to the website Flightradar24 "to see where the plane that's coming to pick me up is. For example, one of the Air France flights between Sao Paulo and Paris arrives in the late afternoon and leaves a few hours later. If I know that it's behind schedule, that's interesting. It doesn't mean that I'm going to leave for the airport later, but at least I know in advance. And, if need be, I can anticipate any long delays or cancellations."

Like many, this seasoned traveller spends hours and hours on planes. "It's a bit like my second homehe says. As a result, it feels like home."For example, if he flies on aircraft types with which he is unfamiliar or on airlines other than Air France, which his company favours, he often checks the quality of the seats offered to him on SeatGuru, the reference site for aircraft cabins launched by frequent flyer Matthew Daimler before it was bought by TripAdvisor in 2007. "In Boeing B777s, I don't like being in the front row, because there's less room.explains Stéphane Estryn. In Airbus A340s, I prefer to be at the front of the cabin, because it's colder in the middle, and in A380s I prefer to be at the top. On this type of aircraft, Business class is less noisy than First class, for example." "I always ask for an aisle seathe adds, but it doesn't matter whether it's on the side rows or the centre row."

Which is quite rare among frequent travellers. "Never the middle, window side for a day flight and aisle side for a night flight"These are the demands of Jean-Claude Bronner, now at the end of his career after holding international management positions in a number of luxury houses including Lanvin, Christofle, Lancel, Hédiard and Lenôtre. "I really enjoyed my travels. Companies were less careful about spending at the time, but it's also true that there were fewer business travellers.he recalls. For example, at Lanvin at the end of the 70s, I was one of the very few to move around the company. I was 23 and the only one that age to travel in First Class. At the time, business class didn't exist. It's also worth noting that comfort in the 80s wasn't as good as today's business class. You had to pick up a good book, because you got bored pretty quickly. Then films on demand arrived, but at fixed times. Today, the choice is unlimited."

With in-flight entertainment systems becoming ever more sophisticated, the hours spent in the air seem to be getting shorter and shorter. But what are they really spent on? According to a survey carried out at the end of 2015 by British Airways among 800 French business travellers, most of them divide this free time between reading (72 %), resting (51 %), films (41 %) and a little work (49 %). But with the rise of in-flight WiFi, could this proportion devoted to work increase? "I use WiFi whenever it's available"says Jean-Claude Bronner. For his part, Stéphane Estryn is more circumspect: "I like the feeling of being disconnected in flight. I understand that WiFi is a request, but personally I'm not in favour of it. Imagine you receive a negative response from a customer for a big contract or an incisive e-mail from your boss, you want to call them directly to get an explanation or to put out the fire. That way you don't have to think about it for the remaining 10 hours of the flight.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-59765" src="https://www.voyages-d-affaires.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/COM-P075895-petite.jpg" alt="The long hours spent on planes are spent resting and relaxing. Thomas Jonglez, for his part, travels in business class when the offers are accessible, but most often chooses Premium Economy. "However, when I have an appointment early on the morning of my arrival, I use my miles for an upgrade so that I don't arrive tired, he explains. As I do triangular trips, for example Rio-Los Angeles-Paris, I also regularly use these miles to buy single tickets, which often cost as much as a return ticket."

The loyalty programmesso much appreciated for the famous milesThese are still important criteria for frequent travellers. However, the rise of low-cost airlines seems to have swept away the established truths of some travellers. "I've come back from the miles a bit. It's not the same obsession as before.explains Serge Marchais, financial analyst. I use it to upgrade to a business class or to buy tickets at the last minute when they are unaffordable. But I'd rather fly cheaper airlines like Vueling than collect miles.".

"I often take easyJet and Vueling - never Ryanair, the service is detestable - for journeys between several citiessays Thomas Jonglez. However, if Air France offered one-way flights, even at 40 euros more, I would take this airline to be able to benefit from the services linked to the frequent flyer programme, in particular the business ticket-cutters and access to the lounge for working in peace and quiet."Because, as well as accumulating miles, being a privileged member also offers practical advantages in the busy day-to-day lives of travellers. "I've been on an hour-long flight and then waited an hour and a half at the counter to get a rental car. Being a frequent customer of a rental company, Avis in my case, is a necessity in order to be able to get a car straight away on arrival.recalls Pierre Guillemin. This is crucial for my business. "

While the 'loyalty' argument also comes into play when it comes to hotels, the choices are much more varied because of the diversity of what's on offer, but also because of personal tastes. Quite clear-cut in his choices, Serge Marchais favours "or chain economic establishments like Ibis or Motel One, or very nice hotels once or twice a year. The in-between is of no interest to me."For his part, Stéphane Estryn mainly stays at Marriott, Westin, Sheraton or W hotels, where available. "What I want most of all from my hotel is to be functional, well placed and to have a gym so that I can work out in the mornings when I'm in the United States and in the evenings if I'm in Asia"he explains.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-59777 size-full" src="https://www.voyages-d-affaires.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/1130271.jpg" alt="Design or function, hotels must above all be well located for many travellers. Their service is not as good as that of the small hotels where you quickly become a regular. For example, in Edinburgh, the Prestonfield may be a little remote, a quarter of an hour from the city centre, but what a charming 15-room manor house with English chic! On the other hand, I don't like designer hotels, which are a bit cold for my taste. When you travel, you want to feel at home, in a warm and comfortable environment."For her part, Andrea Gardella believes that "As long as the price is below the limit set by my company, location is the number one criterion for choosing a hotel so that I can do everything on foot. Then there's the opportunity to collect points and the charm of the hotel. Clearly, if there's no loyalty scheme, I much prefer a boutique hotel."This traveller adds a final criterion, which is essential for mobile executives: free and easy access to WiFi.In other words, without having to enter a web page, click on several links to register, leave your contact details and then receive promotional emails galore... I can't understand why this service is still charged for in some hotels and even more so in airline lounges."

As a competitor to traditional hotels, has alternative accommodation, which is very much in vogue in the leisure sector, already become part of travellers' plans? "I went to Berlin for a conference at the Hotel Adlon. I rented a flat through Airbnb right next door and this solution proved to be perfect"says Serge Marchais. However, not all travellers have yet taken the plunge. "I haven't tried it yet, but I might soon."says Andrea Gardella.

The VTC phenomenon has not escaped the notice of business travellers, many of whom use Uber.

While Airbnb has not yet fully entered the mainstream of business travel, VTCs have already made their mark.
