Airports around the world are taking an interest, as the growing number of passengers poses challenges in terms of fluidity and security. O'C.<\/strong> - Yes, this is already the case in the United States, for example, where SITA is working with JetBlue and the US Customs and Border Patrol. JetBlue passengers can board an international flight simply by looking into a camera. No need to show a passport, boarding pass or any other document. However, international expansion will require international agreements with countries working with the International Civil Aviation Organisation. SITA is working on the technology that would make this possible, i.e. the use of a blockchain (<em>Editor's note: a new secure technology for storing and transmitting information<\/em>), enabling biometric data to be shared securely between several parties.<\/p>\n<h3>Is the technology safe at 100%?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>A. O'C.<\/strong> - Today, every system is vulnerable, and any entity storing biometric data must therefore follow very strict security protocols. Bodies such as the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) have established standards. O'C.<\/strong> - The main advantage is being able to accommodate a greater number of passengers in complete safety, from check-in to the various control points and right through to boarding. Investment is a major consideration. The key is to ensure that the system chosen fits in with the check-in counters and boarding gates.<\/p>\n<h3>Will biometrics become the norm in other areas of travel?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>A. O'C.<\/strong> - Yes, I think it will become widespread. It's already being used by consumers in their daily lives, from access in the workplace to being able to make payments using their smartphone.
