Several big names in the aeronautics industry, not least Boeing and Airbus, are seriously planning to turn this dream into reality. And all this without waiting for the XXIIe century, but from 2020-2030. Almost tomorrow, in fact.

Although he admits that he is not one of "Star Wars fans"In December 2016, Airbus CEO Tom Enders estimated that "in the not-too-distant future, we'll be using our smartphones to make reservations ufully automated flying taxi which will land right outside our front door, with no pilot at all."With each passing month, this prophecy becomes more tangible. Designed by the German firm Volocopter, the first of these Aladdin taxis was tested in the skies over Dubai last September. Powered by 18 rotors powered by lithium-ion batteries, the Volocopter 2X has a range of 27 kilometres and could eventually carry two people at a speed of 100 km/h.

Drone taxis

Does the future of urban transport lie in a third dimension? Several start-ups are ready to take up the challenge. Volocopter received financial backing from carmaker Daimler in August, and others are lining up to take up the challenge. developing e-VTOLselectric aircraft with vertical take-off and landing. Lilium, for example, has designed a mini-jet that can reach speeds of 300 km/h over a distance of 300 km, similar to the S2 designed by the American company Joby Aviation. Meanwhile, Ehang, a Chinese company specialising in recreational drones, is planning to test its Ehang 184 taxi drone soon. Zee Aero, backed by Google co-founder Larry Page, is also announcing the development of a revolutionary means of transport, while Tesla boss Elon Musk is also rumoured to be interested in taking to the skies.

Read also: Electric flying taxis: United Airlines gets in on the act

With their turf under attack, the heavyweights in the aerospace industry are not standing still. But it's above all the business model, inspired by car-sharing, that could make this new-generation urban transport sustainable. According to Airbus, the price of a CityAirbus journey booked by several passengers would end up being very similar to that of a taxi journey today.

With its proven model for booking shared VTCs, Uber intends to position itself as a major player in the flying taxi market. In the near future, travellers could find another booking option alongside UberX or UberPool : UberAir. With the VTC specialist partnering five manufacturers - Embraer, Bell Helicopter, Pipistrel, Aurora Flight Sciences and Mooney Aviation - the first tests are expected in 2020, with commercial flights three years later.

But the real flight of the solution is expected in 2028During the Los Angeles Olympic Games, Uber announced that it would be able to transport visitors from the airport to the Stapples Center stadium in less than 30 minutes, compared with three times as long by car today. Along with Dallas Fort Worth, the Californian city is the second to have teamed up with Uber to introduce these high-tech taxis. "Los Angeles has always been a place where innovators come to launch new ideas that can change the way we live."said Mayor Eric Garcetti in November when the partnership was announced.

What about safety?

Before this mode of transport becomes widespread, there are still many questions to be answered, starting with safety. The manufacturers will have to prove this through their tests, the reliability of their aircraft in the event of bad weather or accidents, as Volocopter is equipped with parachutes. But more than that, what needs to be defined is how these UAV taxis will fit into urban airspace.

Faced with the determination of the various players mentioned above to launch this high-tech urban transport system, the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the European Aviation Safety Agency, the US Federal Aviation Administration and France's Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile are all working on the following projects regulatory developments. NASA, for its part, has been tasked with defining a new management method for low-altitude autonomous flights and counts Uber among its partners, along with other manufacturers. For its part, Airbus has joined forces with the Singapore Civil Aviation Authority as part of the SkyWays project. It probably won't be long before the skies are covered with silent taxis flying over major cities.

Taking to the skies to criss-cross cities: this
