The crowds are dense, but they stroll around just as they would in the shopping arcade of a very upmarket shopping centre. <strong>The crowd takes its time<\/strong> who speaks just about every language. And, for once, she feels that she doesn't have to elbow her way to the shelves, because she has, in fact, all the time in the world... Under the vaguely Renaissance arcades on the first floor, an English pub has put out a few tables, a Japanese restaurant has copied it, next to a crowded champagne bar in the early afternoon, at the time of the first boardings into the port of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/marseille-radieuse-mediterranee-20171018.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marseille<\/a>20 minutes from Saint-Charles station and its TGV high-speed trains.<\/p>\n<p>After all, you're on a ship. And this 96-metre-long shopping arcade is the first thing you see when you board the MSC Meraviglia, the new flagship of MSC Cruises. What a shock! <strong>A gigantic ocean liner<\/strong> entirely built by the Saint-Nazaire shipyards and launched with great fanfare on 3 June 2017. The key figures published for her alone make you dizzy: 315 m long, 65 m high, 19 decks, 2,244 cabins including 75 % with balcony, 5,714 passengers and 1,540 crew members, four swimming pools, a spa, 12 restaurants, 20 bars and lounges, ten places to dance, four conference rooms for 55 to 985 people. Not to mention the yacht club, which is roughly equivalent to the executive floors of major hotels, with an exclusive lounge, bar, swimming pool, dedicated restaurant and 24-hour concierge...<ul id=\"tararama-1\" class=\"bxslider\"><li><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/croisiere-MSC-Meraviglia-dome.jpg\" alt=\"Studded with LED lights, the dome of the MSC Meraviglia&#039;s interior promenade regularly changes its appearance, taking on the air of the Sistine Chapel, a cloud-covered sky or a starry vault. Never mind, we'll have time to discover everything on this week-long cruise, from Marseille to Marseilles, passing through Genoa, Naples, Messina, Malta and Barcelona, with the big ship never dropping anchor in a port for more than a day for a local excursion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68979\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68979\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/carte-croisiere-mediterranee.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-68979 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/carte-croisiere-mediterranee.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/carte-croisiere-mediterranee.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/carte-croisiere-mediterranee-300x236-derived.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68979\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Six cities, four countries, six ports: that's how the MSC Meraviglia, MSC Cruises' new flagship, will cruise in a week.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Port of Marseille, 5pm: the gangways are raised and the mooring lines cast off. <strong>The giant leaves the quay in silence<\/strong>No goodbye sirens, no waving of handkerchiefs. Pity. On board, however, the hustle and bustle is at its peak. First in the cabins, where the new arrivals are settling in, but above all at the excursion desks, where everyone is signing up for or validating the outings they have selected in advance. And then everyone explores what will be their seaside holiday, getting lost in the maze of corridors and promenade decks, stumbling across a swimming pool or a bowling alley, getting lost again, then wearily sitting down on the steps of a staircase to mentally reconstitute the labyrinth leading to their cabin... It's never easy, and the help of a cabin boy passing by is often necessary. At least at first!<\/p>\n<p>But that's it, you're settled in and you can make the 17 m\u00b2 cabin your own, with its soft, almost reassuring tones: bathroom with shower, cupboards, safe, king-size bed, desk, sofa, minibar and, above all, a private terrace with two armchairs and a coffee table. Outside, the enchantment of the C\u00f4te d'Azur on the port side, a red sunset over the towns and villages, the lights of Toulon, Cannes and Nice lighting up one after the other.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Mediterranean night is marvellous, and the ship makes no mechanical noise. No engine humming as a soundtrack, no sudden shudders. None of the ordinary acoustics of a ferry or a small liner. What's more, the sheer size of this behemoth means there's not the slightest roll or pitch to be heard. <strong>You can hardly smell the open sea.<\/strong> It's more like being in a hotel, an itinerant resort that each day brings a different landscape, a different language, a new idea for an outing. The rest of the time, you enjoy the surroundings, which transform the hotel-ship into a destination in its own right. The first evening is generally a rather quiet one, with recent passengers content to dine in their favourite restaurant, take a stroll on the promenade deck or in the Meraviglia gallery, and have a nightcap on their private balcony.<\/p>\n<h2>Genoa, from the Renaissance to Renzo Piano<\/h2>\n<p>Early in the morning, the MSC Meraviglia docks in the port of Genoa. The buffet restaurant, which runs for almost a third of the ship's length, is already firing on all cylinders; the trays are loaded with croissants - too many - rolls - too many - cold meats - too many - cheeses - too many - cereals, fruit... In short, all the earthly foods in far too large quantities. Buffets are like that. It's murder and almost always 'more eyeballs than belly', especially on the first two or three days when you need iron willpower to resist the temptations.<\/p>\n<p>Through the bay windows: Genoa's commercial port and, above all, the city. <strong>The whole of Italy tumbling down in an amphitheatre<\/strong> from the top of the hills to the harbour. It's a beauty that has remained a little out of touch with the rest of the peninsula in terms of tourism - Florence, Venice, Rome and Naples spring to mind - and that's a real shame. Especially as the old port, just a 15-minute walk from the commercial harbour, has been wonderfully restored by Renzo Piano, a native of the area. It's very cheerful, light, elegant, full of little pleasures and contemporary finds, like these mobile sculptures covered in white canvas, halfway between windmill wings and reminiscent of a sailboat. It's a much more fun way to explore the city, perched on a machine that looks like something out of an Enki Bilal cartoon, and that you see from time to time at tourist attractions in every major city in the world. It's got two wheels and a broomstick in front, and that's about it. <strong>That's impressive<\/strong>But it's actually very simple, because it balances itself. Lean forward and it moves. Lean back and it stops. Further back again: it moves backwards. Tap your shoulder to the side and it turns. It's child's play, and in just ten minutes you'll have learned all you need to know before setting off, in guided groups of six or eight people, to discover a steep city of narrow, dark alleys. A labyrinth of palaces and churches...<\/p>\n<p>From the Middle Ages to the 18th century, the city was<sup>e<\/sup> It's one of the richest in Italy, and there's certainly something left of it. The segway, blessed be it, allows you to discover the essence of it without the slightest fatigue. And that's a good thing, because along three main streets grouped together under the name \"Strade Nuove\" and in a fairly small area, you'll find <strong>no fewer than 80 Renaissance and Baroque palaces<\/strong>Some are open to visitors, including Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Tursi. These are architectural masterpieces, featuring not only flats and their furnishings, but also masterpieces from the history of painting. P\u00eale-m\u00eale: Tintoretto, Veronese, Van Dyck, Caravaggio, Rubens, Canova...<\/p>\n<p>While we're at it, we'll take the time to stop off at an old-fashioned bakery-pastry shop and enjoy our first Italian ristretto, a very strong coffee, accompanied by focaccia, a type of bread dough and the Italian version of fougasse, a speciality from Genoa. And since we have time - the stopover, like all stopovers, lasts a full day - we might even learn how to make a real pesto as it was created here, with courses being given in the Palazzo Spinola. Enchanted by this first port of call, and after reluctantly returning the famous segway, we return to the ship at the end of the afternoon, enjoying one last time the bustle of this exceptional port redesigned by one of the greatest architects of the turn of the twentieth century.<sup>e<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<h2>Foam afternoon during the cruise<\/h2>\n<p>On board, the atmosphere is at its height. The newcomers have just come on board, discovering their floating hotel. And as most of them are Italian, they tend to turn up the decibels. By the large landscaped swimming pool, it's techno music and a foamy afternoon. <strong>Like in the clubs of Ibiza.<\/strong> Young people in bikinis - Italians, boys and girls alike, love their bikinis reduced to a minimum - are running wild with their arms in the air, while on stage, microphone in hand, the entertainer is running and jumping, gesticulating and jabbing his fingers like a New York rapper. Bars are everywhere, serving up cocktails, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, accompanied by gigantic bowls of fruit or, far less chic, deep-fried burgers.<\/p>\n<p>At the front of the boat, part of floors 16 to 18 of the yacht club is reserved for corporate clients. In other words, 95 suites with concierge service, lounge, bar, restaurant, swimming pool and solarium, inaccessible to other passengers without a pass. <strong>The atmosphere in the yacht club is much more subdued.<\/strong>more elegant, more polished. From 6 p.m. onwards, drinks are served here in cocktail dresses and bow ties, and even waiters are served in tails. In fact, in the evenings, Meraviglia is more dressed up than down, according to age and taste. In the restaurants first of all, and especially at the many parties on board.<\/p>\n<p>This evening, after a classical concert given at the foot of the grand double-flight staircase - a deluge of Swarovski crystal - you can watch an acrobatic parade by Cirque du Soleil before strolling through the gallery, which is packed with entertainment, as well as promotions on handbags and perfumes from top brands, accompanied by music and dancing for teenagers... In short, a marine version of the Spanish rambla or the Italian passeggiata.<\/p>\n<p>The ceiling of the 480 m\u00b2 gallery, covered in LED bulbs, is constantly changing. <strong>decor ranging from the vaults of a Gothic cathedral to the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel<\/strong> or a sky punctuated by a few white clouds. At one end, it's downright Las Vegas at the Imperiale casino, a real casino with all the gaudy neon lights, slot machines, American roulette tables and blackjack... The sea no longer exists. And it will exist even less, when later in the evening, doors that had not yet been seen at the back of the gaming room will open onto another room, this one for shows, with 400 seats. On the programme, nothing less than the magic of Cirque du Soleil, who have staged two completely different shows, Sonor and Viaggio, especially for the boat. A true performance when you consider the inherent constraints of a ship.<\/p>\n<h2>The Neapolitan way of speaking<\/h2>\n<p>The next day, at around 9.30 am, we make our sublime entrance into the Bay of Naples, the Vomero hill, the Castel Sant'Elmo and the Carthusian monastery of Saint Martin. To starboard: Vesuvius. At 11.30am, passengers disembark and set off on an excursion, either to Naples or to Pompeii. It's a choice, because even if the ship's doors don't close until 7pm, there's no way you can choose both destinations in a single afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Naples, then. Naples and its unique, compact historic heart, terribly rich in palaces and churches. <strong>Naples as seen in films<\/strong>It's just as we imagined it would be, but unfortunately, pressed for time, we're only able to catch a glimpse of it in a group behind a guide riding through the city. So we'll skim the Palazzo Reale, wander along the Galleria Umberto I and catch a glimpse of the Teatro San Carlo, the temple of opera built in 1737 at the wish of Charles of Bourbon. Then it's time to take a break at the Caffe Gambrinus (1860), one of the oldest and most famous establishments in Naples. They say the city is teeming and overcrowded: it's true! They also say that Neapolitans have a very personal conception of driving, and it's true too! This can be seen on the road leading to the Spaccanapoli, a long pedestrian thoroughfare that follows the ancient Greek road and literally cuts Naples in two. It's completely straight and quite narrow; in any case it gives <strong>an idea of popular Naples<\/strong> as it once was, with washing in the windows and children frolicking in the streets. Today, tourists and the merchants who go with them have invaded the area. However... One of the alleyways that cuts off the street at right angles, Via San Gregorio, has the unique distinction - probably unique in the world - of specialising 12 months out of 12 in the art of nativity scenes and santons. The result is totally surrealistic interiors, far removed from the grotto of Bethlehem, populated by small animated characters representing just about every trade: pizzaiolo, barber, florist, wine merchant, vespa salesman.<\/p>\n<p>It's great fun, and no doubt also provides an opportunity for a Christmas market, before or after the hour, which is totally unexpected. However, before we get back to the boat's entertainment, we can't escape a pizza tasting, Margherita as it should be, which was created here in honour of Margaret of Savoy, the tomatoes, mozzarella and basil evoking the colours of the Italian flag. But don't worry about the calories, because this evening we'll be having a Japanese dinner at the boat's excellent Kaito Teppanyaki restaurant, perched high on stool chairs around four giant grills where four chefs put on a show. It's a sure-fire hit, with the added bonus of refined Asian cuisine. After dinner, all hell breaks loose in the cabins as preparations are made for a white party modelled on those Eddy Barclay used to throw every summer for the Saint-Tropez jet set.<\/p>\n<h2>Taormina, Italian romanticism<\/h2>\n<p>The next morning we disembark in Messina, Sicily. On the face of it, MSC's choice of Messina as a stopover is a curious one, since, apart from the centre and the charming Duomo district, not much remains of the fabulous city described by Cicero, but almost entirely destroyed in the 18th century.<sup>e<\/sup> century by an earthquake, followed by a tsunami. Still... painting lovers will be delighted with two paintings by Caravaggio on display at the museo regionale, <em>The Adoration of the Shepherds<\/em> and <em>The Resurrection of Lazarus<\/em>which the genius-bad-boy executed during his stay in Messina at the beginning of the 17th century.<sup>e<\/sup> century. They echo three masterpieces, including the remarkable Polyptych of St Gregory by Antonello da Massina. After this not-to-be-missed visit, it's natural to head for the must-see destination of the 19th-century romantic gentry.<sup>e<\/sup> century, around fifty km from Messina: Taormina.<\/p>\n<p>It's easy to understand why Messina was chosen as a stopover. The site is sublime, clinging as it does to a wall overlooking the sea. <strong>one of Italy's most beautiful bays<\/strong>. As a bonus, with Etna as a backdrop. It's holiday blue, full of flower-filled alleyways and staircases where you've forgotten a few large potteries; with palaces everywhere, large middle-class houses, gardens planted by a lady, Florence Trevelyan, who settled here in 1884 and, of course, churches. A Greek theatre crowns the ensemble, a magical venue for summer festivals and rock star concerts. The artistic scene, especially the literary scene, loved Taormina in the nineteenth century.<sup>e<\/sup> century. It's still just as attractive, with some celebrities having their holiday homes here. So it's going to be a lazy afternoon wandering around the fashion boutiques or caf\u00e9 terraces, or even down to the beach.<\/p>\n<p>The sea is so beautiful that we're dragging our feet a little to get back to the boat. But tonight is the Captain's evening on deck 6. The ladies are all dressed up, and so are the gentlemen. The master on board, Raffaele Pontecorvo, is quick to have his photo taken with the passengers, as a photo studio has been set up for this purpose. The sea, as if imprisoned, is formidably encircled by defensive walls, lined with towers and turrets, with, high above, hanging gardens and palaces that seem sumptuous. It's almost as if the giant of the seas has landed right in the middle of the city. From the quayside, you can take a very welcome lift straight up to the ancient city. <strong>Valletta is rich.<\/strong> Rich in history - Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Muslims, slave pirates, Angevins and Spaniards - rich in art and culture too. But above all, there are the Knights of the Order of St John, who landed here in 1530 and built the Grand Master's Palace, as well as the 'inns', vast houses where the knights gathered. Artists soon followed, as the knights became patrons of the arts over the years. Caravaggio, once again, stayed there for a time under the protection of the Grand Master to escape a death sentence in Rome. He painted five canvases here, including his finest work, the sublime Decollation of St John the Baptist, which is preserved in the cathedral. St John's Co-Cathedral, the highlight of a visit to Valletta, is a masterpiece of Baroque art, hidden behind a rather austere fa\u00e7ade.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, there is nothing but gilding, sculptures, paintings and marble... But it is above all the sumptuous decorations on the pavement that impress. They're all you can see. In fact, there are 369 polychrome marble tombstones that shine to the extreme. Also on the menu for the half-day stopover is the Grand Master's Palace, with its interior courtyards and rooms decorated to the highest standards of luxury, and above all the Armoury, with one of the richest collections in Europe. For the rest, <strong>you'll love getting lost in this charming museum-capital<\/strong>The streets are lined with balconies that look like moucharabiehs, and you walk along the high walls of some of the palaces. We walk in Valletta, and a lot. So tonight we're going to be on our best behaviour, and we might well leave the 'tropical party' behind to take in one of the shows at the Broadway Theatre. The sky over the LED gallery is azure blue. On deck 16, it's stretching, followed a little later by an aerobics class. Around the pools, the bath boys prepare hundreds of deckchairs which, in the afternoon, will transform the boat into a seaside resort. But above all, this day at sea will give you a chance to explore the ship and discover all the activities on offer - it's never too late.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It's absolutely mind-boggling.<\/strong> In terms of entertainment, the day includes a table football tournament, mozzarella making demonstration, cocktail creation, country, rumba and cha cha cha dance lessons, Italian wine tasting, football and table tennis tournaments, bingo... It's a lot, especially if you add to it a trip to the huge gym or, better still, a massage, manicure or pedicure session at the Balinese spa. Not to mention the two Formula 1 simulators, the bowling alley and the Aqua Park with its four gigantic slides. The following day, Barcelona will bring this exceptional discovery of the western Mediterranean to an urban close.<\/p>\n<h2>Barcelona, Gaudi and Picasso<\/h2>\n<p>It's great, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/catalogne-dune-modernite-lautre-20140730.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barcelona<\/a>. It's so lively, so unique, so full of Catalan soul and culture that it's hard to pick one excursion over another. The choice is between the Barri Gotic, the historic district near the port, a tour of modernist architecture, culminating in Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, and visits to the three major modern art institutions: the Picasso Museum, the Miro Foundation and the Antoni Tapies Foundation, the Miro Foundation and the Antoni Tapies Foundation, or simply strolling along the ramblas, browsing the shops selling Spanish brands at rock-bottom prices and stopping off at one of the countless tapas bars flourishing in the historic Boqueria covered market. <strong>A firework display of Mediterranean flavours.<\/strong> These will be the last ones, as tomorrow they disembark in Marseille, followed by a three-hour TGV journey to Paris. For her part, the MSC Meraviglia will be heading back to Genoa for an identical tour, before another, and another.
