{"id":68477,"date":"2017-12-08T10:30:46","date_gmt":"2017-12-08T09:30:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/?p=68477"},"modified":"2023-10-10T12:44:08","modified_gmt":"2023-10-10T10:44:08","slug":"star-alliance-20-digital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/star-alliance-20-digital","title":{"rendered":"Star Alliance turns 20: the age of digital and openness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Markus Ruediger and Janice Antonson, respectively Director and Vice-President of Communications for <strong>Star Alliance<\/strong>made the trip to Paris on Friday. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/futur-flou-alliances-aeriennes-20170411.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The airline alliance<\/a>which is celebrating the twentieth anniversary of its creation, is clearly entering the age of reason, or rather the digital age. Evoking a <strong>\"\u00a0<em>change of strategy\u00a0<\/em>\"<\/strong>, passing \"\u00a0<em>from the network era to the<strong>digital era\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>\"In his keynote speech, Markus Ruediger underlined the importance of new technologies in consolidating the Star Alliance offering. The alliance's standards will therefore be raised a notch in terms of connectivity, with a view to harmonising the technological side of member airlines. Rather than launching yet another application on business travellers' smartphones, Star Alliance intends to encourage the exchange of information between its members' mobile tools, thereby improving real-time information for passengers.<\/p>\n<p>After twenty years of development, culminating in a network of 28 member airlines, has Star Alliance given up any desire to expand? \"\u00a0<em>The time is no longer ripe for increasing the number of member companies\u00a0<\/em>\"explains Markus Ruediger, who refers to a \"\u00a0<em>ceiling reached\u00a0<\/em>\". However, the Star Alliance catalogue could well be expanded in the near future. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/moyen-orient-compagnies-golfe-20170711.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Gulf companies<\/strong> <\/a>have been mooted for several years - after all, didn't Qatar Airways join OneWorld? - this target does not seem to be on the agenda. \"\u00a0<em>Their network would add nothing to that of Star Alliance\u00a0<\/em>\"Markus Ruediger points out that, unlike a player like Turkish Airlines, the domestic market of the Gulf carriers is not of major strategic interest. If the alliance's network were to be extended even further, it might well be in the direction of the most \"restless\" players of the moment: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/low-cost-aerien-20171205.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">low cost <\/a>such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/norwegian-le-pari-du-long-courrier-low-cost-a-paris-20160219.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Norwegian<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/level-low-cost-long-courrier-paris-orly-20171128.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Level<\/strong><\/a>or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voyages-d-affaires.com\/en\/joon-air-france-start-up-20170925.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Joon<\/strong><\/a>. Pure and simple integration into the alliance is not envisaged, due to the criteria of generalised partnership with all members. But a new format for cooperation could well pave the way for such a rapprochement. By joining forces with <strong>Juneyao<\/strong> last spring, Star Alliance discreetly introduced the status of <strong>\"connecting partner<\/strong> with this Chinese airline: a position which requires commercial relations with at least three Star Alliance airlines - as opposed to all the members in the case of traditional alliance membership - and which enables it to reach markets which are still under-exploited.
