This explains why the Norwegian company has always been committed to eco-responsibility. Without being moralists, the crews have become experts in environmentally-friendly tourism<\/strong>These include conferences, wildlife expeditions, meals made with local ingredients, beach clean-ups, etc.\".Our fleet has been using light fuel oil for years, and we are gradually equipping it to run on liquefied natural gas.<\/em>adds Christine Blois. What's more, since this summer, no plastic has been used on board.<\/em>\".<\/p>\n

So it's not surprising thatHurtigruten<\/a> will be the first shipping line to launch two hybrid-powered ships in 2019: the MS Roald Amundsen and the MS Fridjof Nansen. The latter will offer only outside cabins and suites, all enhanced by a lounge with large picture windows, a wellness centre with infinity pool, but also customised shipping equipment<\/strong> such as Blueye underwater drones, kayaks and polar inflatable boats, to tackle areas that would otherwise be inaccessible. At the cutting edge of technology, these ships will have a high-tech science centre with touch screens and state-of-the-art instruments available to passengers.<\/p>\n

Reducing environmental impact<\/h2>\n

Another specialist in expedition cruises, the French-speaking company Le Ponant, is also committed to respectful navigation. Its membership of the International Association of Arctic Cruise Operators (AECO) is proof of its commitment to preserving the environment. \"From the design of our ships to landings, everything is designed to minimise our environmental impact<\/strong>\u00a0These include the choice of routes, preference for sailing under sail, coatings that limit air and water pollution, raising awareness among crews and passengers, and the presence on board of an environmental officer...<\/em>\"confirms Herv\u00e9 Bella\u00efche, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing.<\/p>\n

Four of its boats - Le Bor\u00e9al, L'Austral, Le Sol\u00e9al and Le Lyrial - have been awarded the International Cleanship label (Bureau Veritas), in recognition of their innovative green equipment: silent and economical electric propulsion, dynamic positioning to avoid dropping anchor in order to save energy, etc. protect the seabed<\/strong>These include a range of new technologies, such as the use of diesel engines that can run on less polluting Marine Diesel Oil (MDO), and innovative treatment of waste water and waste...\".In 2021, we'll be the first shipping company in the world to launch a hybrid vessel running on liquefied natural gas and electricity: it's taken us six years to develop it!<\/em>\"Herv\u00e9 Bella\u00efche proudly announces.<\/p>\n

The world leader in top-of-the-range French-language expedition cruises, particularly to the poles, Le Ponant is expanding both its fleet and its catalogue. By 2021, the company will own 12 ships and offer 460 cruises, with new destinations including New Zealand, Polynesia, Iceland, the Red Sea, Northern Europe and the Baltic. The small capacity ships, with 90 to 135 cabins, are easily privatised<\/strong> by companies, particularly for three- to four-day cruises. \"In recent years, we have seen an increase of around 30 % in MICE requests.<\/em>\"says Herv\u00e9 Bella\u00efche.<\/p>\n

Star Clippers yachts are also exceptional. Combining the charm of yesteryear with modern comfort, they unfurl their immense sails to ultra-silent navigation<\/strong>. \"These yachts give an idea of what life was like on board this type of boat 150 years ago. The atmosphere is both relaxed and intimate.<\/em>\"says B\u00e9atrice Frantz, Sales Manager. These are the kind of features that appeal to companies when it comes to partial or full privatisations.<\/p>\n

While the Star Clipper and Star Flyer have 85 double cabins and the Royal Clipper 150 cabins, the Flying Clipper will soon complete the range with 150 cabins. With its five masts, it will be the largest square-sailed ship in existence. Inspired by the legendary France II,<\/strong> which at the beginning of the XXe<\/sup> The world's largest boat of its type in the 21st century, it will benefit from cutting-edge technology while sailing on wind power, weather permitting. It also promises unforgettable moments, with stopovers in tiny ports and tailor-made excursions. More than 10,000 GOs (friendly organisers) and GEs (friendly employees) have been trained in environmental causes, including the crew of Club Med 2.<\/p>\n

Support for reforestation<\/h2>\n

In the Mediterranean, Corsica Ferries is similarly committed to reducing its environmental footprint. Since 2012, the shipping company has been involved in a reforestation project<\/strong> in the Amazon rainforest and supports two agroforestry projects in Corsica. More than 77,500 trees have already been planted in the Peruvian forest, representing the equivalent of 25,300 tonnes of CO2. \"As a responsible operator, we apply a carbon offsetting approach. Through this programme, we support small producers in Peru and Corsica, and encourage our passengers to continue to get involved.<\/em>\"says Pierre Matt\u00e9i, Chairman of the company.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Corsica Ferries intends to reduce its consumption of fuel and refrigerants. Efforts are also being made to make the engines as environmentally friendly as possible. \"We are also planning to build two new-generation fast ferries fuelled by light natural gas and equipped with quayside connections.<\/em>\"adds Pierre Matt\u00e9i. Corsica Ferries serves the large islands of the western Mediterranean<\/strong>\u00a0Liguria, Tuscany, Elba, Corsica and Sardinia. And, since this year, it is the only shipping company to offer the Balearic Islands from France, with two weekly rotations from Toulon. Its 13 boats are available for private hire and can accommodate groups of up to 200 people.<\/p>\n

The 55 CroisiEurope ships that sail the world's most beautiful rivers have roughly the same capacity. In 2014, the Strasbourg-based company won the trophy for innovation in river tourism for the MS Loire Princesse, a 90 m long, 15 m wide, three-deck boat. Sailing on the Loire, this vessel is distinguished by paddle wheel propulsion<\/strong> with the utmost respect for the environment. A second of the same type was launched in 2018: the MS Elbe Princesse. With a length of 101 m, it can accommodate 90 passengers in 45 cabins with outside views. Its shallow draught means it can sail all year round on the Elbe and Moldau rivers, between Berlin and Prague.<\/p>\n

But the entire CroisiEurope fleet is designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible. For example, the boats are equipped with water economisers and waste water treatment systems, and can run on mains electricity. In addition, their hulls are painted with non-polluting components and diesel consumption is reduced. The company has also introduced a partnership with Unesco<\/strong> for the healthy and sustainable development of Africa's river ports. Croisi-Europe even plans to launch boats that run on electricity and to rationalise on-board consumption by reducing waste production through the use of recyclable packaging.<\/p>\n

With strong demand in Asia and Africa for short river cruises to complement safaris, tours or city trips, the company is also expanding its exotic offering with a new ship this year, the MS African Dream, sailing on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe. Entirely designed to offer its 16 passengers maximum visibility over the southern savannah<\/strong>With its panoramic restaurant, roof-top, sun loungers and swimming pool, it offers absolute comfort. Its eight modern, comfortable suites offer breathtaking views of the region's wild landscapes. \"The MS African Dream is ideal for observing the flora and fauna without upsetting the balance of the ecosystem.<\/em>\"says Eric Collange, Sales Director.<\/p>\n

Alain Souleille, founder of Rivages du Monde, a specialist in French-language cultural cruises by sea and river, is more modest. \"We are very aware of environmental issues and do what we can, at our own level, to combat pollution.<\/em>\". Firstly, by only chartering boats on a human scale,<\/strong> with between 40 and 500 passengers on board, and then through various actions such as waste water treatment. An attempt to go paperless was also launched this summer during a cruise in Alaska, with passengers consulting menus and programmes on screen.<\/p>\n

Sustainability in our DNA<\/h2>\n

This same concern for the environment and people is present among the major shipping companies. One of the forerunners in this field is the Italian company Costa, which operates 15 ships criss-crossing the world's seas, offering a total of 137 different itineraries to 261 destinations and 60 ports of embarkation. \"Sustainable development is in our DNA<\/em>\"says Georges Azouze, President of Costa Crociere France. For Costa, being a pioneer in the sector for 70 years means doing more than just deploying ships around the world to offer a wide range of services. wonderful memories<\/strong> to MICE groups. It also means setting an example. \"The potential of a growing industry such as the cruise industry must play a very important role, particularly in achieving the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations for 2030.<\/em>\"says Georges Azouze.<\/p>\n

The company believes that a cruise line should do more than simply move passengers from one place to another. It plays a much broader role, forging links between people and cultures, as well as having a positive impact on the communities with which it interacts. In the interests of transparency, every year since 2006 the company has published an annual sustainable development report<\/strong>which can be consulted on its website. Its strategy is based around three strands - Sea, You and Tomorrow - which focus respectively on issues relating to environmental protection (reducing emissions, optimising energy consumption, recycling waste, etc.), the creation of shared values and responsible innovation, including the construction of two eco-responsible ships.<\/p>\n

The first of these, the Costa Smeralda, is due to be launched in November 2019. It will be able to carry 2,600 passengers on cruises in the western Mediterranean and will be the company's first cruise ship to run on liquefied natural gas. At the same time, Costa has set up the 4GOODFOOD programme, which aims to achieve the following targets by 2020 reducing food waste<\/strong> of 50 % on board all the ships in its fleet. So when the Costa Fascinosa disembarked for the first time in a French port, Marseille, last May, the surplus meals were donated to the Salvation Army. This operation will now be repeated every week when the ship calls at Marseille. Initially launched in Italy, this programme enabled 28,700 portions to be donated to charities between July 2017 and May 2018. Costa plans to extend this innovative experiment, which is currently unique in the maritime sector, to its entire fleet.<\/p>\n

\"All aboard for the kids<\/h2>\n

Another major player in the maritime cruise market, MSC Crociere is also committed to a sustainable and humanitarian development programme, notably through a partnership forged with UNICEF in 2009 to raise funds to combat child malnutrition through ready-to-use food. To date, 81,000 children and their families in Africa have benefited from the funds raised on board thanks to the \"All aboard for children\" programme. In addition, and in order to supporting biodiversity<\/strong> in protected marine areas, MSC Crociere has embarked on a policy of certification. In 2013, it became the first company to be awarded the 7 Golden Pearls prize by Bureau V\u00e9ritas.<\/p>\n

\"Open-air<\/a>
Open-air cruising and energy efficiency: MSC's new ships combine passenger entertainment with reduced emissions \u00a9 MSC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This award recognises the Fantasia class ships for their respect for the environment: treatment of air, waste water and waste, energy efficiency, food safety, health and safety at work. MSC Cruises is also the first cruise line to voluntarily reduce its emissions<\/strong> in ports to levels below legal requirements. \"Between 2017 and 2026, we plan to build 12 boats, doubling our fleet.<\/em>\"says Patrick Pourbaix, Managing Director, France, Belgium and Luxembourg.<\/p>\n

The new liners will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, including digital technology, such as interactive bracelets linking passengers to onboard services and activating geolocalised suggestions thanks to 3,050 Bluetooth beacons. They are also equipped with a Yacht Club area at the bow, a sort of second private boat with 70 to 80 cabins, lounges, restaurant, swimming pool and 24-hour butler. In 2017, the MSC Meraviglia was the first of this new generation to be launched. It boasts green technology<\/strong> enabling it to reduce its oil consumption, consume less energy thanks to LED bulbs and manage waste efficiently.<\/p>\n

In the same way, Norwegian Cruise Line is investing in the expansion and modernisation of its fleet, through cutting-edge digital applications such as iConcierge, as well as measures to limit its environmental impact<\/strong>These include the installation of exhaust gas scrubbers on seven of its 14 ships and the use of an anti-friction coating on hulls to improve energy efficiency. At the same time, a wide range of measures are being taken to ensure that we are as environmentally friendly as possible. Every year, thousands of gallons of cooking grease are recycled. On the charity front, the company, which has a strong presence in the Caribbean, is a partner of All Hands Volunteers, the world's leading organisation of volunteers specialising in relief operations after natural disasters. It is also involved in the Hope Starts Here programme to help hurricane victims. It has raised 2.5 million dollars for this programme.<\/p>\n

\"Norwegian<\/a>
Norwegian Cruise Line is modernising its fleet with ships that are less polluting but still have top-of-the-range cabins \u00a9 Norwegian Cruise Line<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

But perhaps the most surprising thing about the environment is to see a behemoth like the Oasis of the Seas<\/strong> is one of the least polluting ships in the world fleet. This is thanks in particular to a 2 MW steam turbine that recovers heat and converts it into reusable energy. Its engines, linked to scrubbers that reduce oxide emissions, burn 25 % less fuel than slightly smaller ships. What's more, the Oasis is equipped with a reprocessing and recycling system that means it discharges no waste water.<\/p>\n

However, despite all these advances, there are still still some hurdles to overcome<\/strong> to ensure that these maritime and river environmental initiatives become widespread. For the moment, few ports are equipped to supply LNG. As a result, ships have to resort to refuelling vessels that are not necessarily environmentally friendly.... What's more, changing the consumption habits of cruise passengers, particularly in terms of food wastage on board, is still a long, long way off. Clearly, the 100 % green cruise is still a long way off!<\/p>\n
