Radisson Blu in Bamako, Splendid hotel in Ouagadougou, Grand Bassam seaside resort: the African hotel industry has recently paid a heavy price for international terrorism. So, as the issue of security takes on ever greater importance in the corporate world, the question of choosing a hotel is, perhaps more so in Africa than elsewhere, essential from this point of view. \"Most of our customers ask us which hotels to choose. The attack on the Radisson Blu in Bamako was a triggering factor<\/strong><\/em>explains Charline G\u00e9lin, Security Manager at International SOS. We have put in place an assessment methodology that takes into account the hotel's immediate environment.<\/em>\"For example, if an international chain establishment leaves little doubt as to its compliance with safety standards, they are often close to presidential palaces and key locations in the city. As a result, although they are very safe on a day-to-day basis, they can become targets during political demonstrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is something to bear in mind in the run-up to elections, for example. Other points studied by International SOS, but which can easily be observed by the traveller himself: physical security measures. Is there a security gate?<\/strong> Is luggage systematically searched? Are room doors equipped with a double latch and a peephole? Does the hotel have an underground car park, in which case it would be vulnerable? What are the transport risks between the hotel and the airport or the main meeting points? \"During our training sessions, we also recommend that travellers choose a room between the third and seventh floors, i.e. accessible by the fire brigade, but less exposed to the risk of terrorism than rooms near the car park and reception.<\/em>\"says Charline G\u00e9lin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For their part, the hoteliers have assured us that they are doing everything in their power to ensure travellers' safety. \"Our design, safety, security and operational teams work closely together to provide a safe and secure environment for our customers<\/strong><\/em>\"says Alex Kyriakidis from Marriott. Olivier Granet of AccorHotels, for his part, explains that he has created a dedicated safety and security manager for the region.responsible for visiting hotels, checking that emergency plans are up to date and monitoring the country.<\/em>\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing is certain: security measures have evolved considerably in recent years. \"They were considerably strengthened<\/strong> at the request of governments, but also by hotel operators<\/em>\"explains Olivier Jacquin of the Mangalis Group. With redesigned access zones, double the number of security staff, airport-standard security gates and more security cameras in public areas and on floors, Mangalis is doing everything possible to minimise risks. Olivier Jacquin believes that \"All in all, hotel security in Africa is far superior to that in Europe.<\/em>\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
